Selecting our Permanent Worship Setting Over the past six months, the parish Worship Committee has offered us two different worship settings in addition to our original setting in the round. From June through October, the seating was fan-shaped with the altar, ambo and celebrant s chair in the front (i.e., on west side). From October up to the present, the seating was changed to be more squared off with the altar, ambo and celebrant s chair still in the front. At our Masses January 19-20, we will conduct a survey to see which arrangement the parish community prefers. And that setting will remain the more permanent setting for the foreseeable future. There are posters at each door this weekend showing the three settings. Please take a look to remember how each setting looked. MIDWEST AUGUSTINIAN Highlights Homer Glen- New Lenox Help yourself to the current issue of the MIDWEST AUGUSTINIAN available at the church doors. This issue highlights the new Augustinian friary being built for several Augustinian friars (including Fr. Joe) in Homer Glen. Also, the cover story is about the life and ministry of the Augustinian cloistered Sisters on Marley Road in New Lenox. Peace & Social Justice Peace must start in ourselves, one soul at a time. Act & Pray for Peace Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. MASS FOR LIFE SUNDAY, JANUARY 20, 2019 The Multi Parish Respect Life Knowledge and Prayer Series announces a special Mass For Life. This unique liturgy, Sunday, January 20, 5:30 PM at St. Michael Parish, Highland, Orland Park will be concelebrated by representatives of Our Lady of the Woods, St. Bernard's, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Michael, Our Mother of Good Counsel and Annunciation Byzantine Catholic parishes. This Mass gives witness to the truth concerning the greatest human rights and moral violation of our time - legalized abortion on demand. This Mass begins the seventh year of the Knowledge and Prayer series sponsored by the 6 parishes above. Come to the Mass and receive the 2019 schedule of events. Abortion was legalized on January 22, 1973, in the now-infamous Supreme Court decisions in Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton. People of many faiths or no faith are welcome to join us in prayer for the overturning of this decision and the restoration of respect for life from conception to natural death. Tax Time St. Bernard will, once again, send an end of the year statement to EVERYONE for the tax year These will be mailed to you in February. AED Training On Tuesday, January 15, St. Bernard s will host a training on how to use the Automated External Defibrillator, also known as AED. The training will be led by Lieutenant Scott Pucel, EMS Coordinator of Northwest Homer Fire District. Class begins at 7:00pm and is open to any St. Bernard s volunteer. 5 Communion To The Sick At Home A Revised Plan St. Bernard s Parish is blessed to have over two dozen volunteers trained to bring Communion to the Sick at home, in nearby hospitals and health care facilities. This is the Hands of Care ministry started many years ago. Of course, Fr. Joe and Deacon Kevin are happy to participate in this important outreach and ministry as well. The Hands of Care volunteers have been trained to show compassion to the sick as well as proper reverence to the Blessed Sacrament and how it is to be shared outside of Mass. While parishioners may have a sincere wish to bring Holy Communion to an infirm family member, there must be assurance that the person carrying Holy Communion is properly trained to do so. So, beginning in February, anyone wishing to bring Communion to an infirm family member needs to first contact the rectory and arrange a Communion visit by Fr. Joe. Fr. Joe can then assign one of the parish s many trained Hands of Care ministers to the Sick to arrange more frequent visits. Or, he can offer the required training to the family member who wishes to serve as a Hands of Care minister of Communion to that sick family member. To facilitate this revised approach, the priest at Mass will no longer be calling forward persons bringing Communion to the Sick after the Communion of Mass. Instead, those wishing Communion to be brought to the home will need to contact Fr. Joe or Deacon Kevin and make the appropriate arrangements through them. Baptism of the Lord 13 January 2019 Remember our own Baptism. Many of us were infants in arms at Baptism. Without actual remembering, we may have items to help recall it pictures, garment, candle, stories told. But we have every Easter Day with the Renewal of Baptismal Promises to help us remember and pledge them anew. We also have the Baptism of others to recall the impact of those saving waters for us and for all. Just like with Jesus, the heavens open so that God is near to us, so that God calls us my favorite, so that God remains pleased in us; in me. Who can I invite to join us in Christic discipleship through preparation for Baptism? HOSPITALITY MINISTRY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Hospitality program can always use an extra pair of hands. Families, retirees, young adults, and all those needing service hours are most welcome. You will never work alone and you can choose your favorite month to participate!
