2 FEAST OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE BELT OF THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD Since there are no relics of the Holy Mother's earthly body (as she was assumed into Heaven), her personal belongings became articles of pious devotion. As they were secretly kept during the time of persecution of the early church, they began to appear in later times. The first, her belt or girdle, was discovered in Jerusalem in the fifth century during the reign of Emperor Argadeos. This important article of clothing and decoration for Eastern women was later translated to Constantinople and placed In the Cathedral dedicated to the Holy Mother of God, where it was recorded to be at the time of Empress Zoe's miraculous recovery more than half a century later. The celebration of the Discoveries of the Belt and Box of the Holy Mother of God were introduced into the Armenian Church during the revisions made by Catholicos Simeon Yerevantzi (Catholicos ) to the Directory of Feasts (Donatzouytz). The Discovery of the Belt is celebrated on the second Sunday following the Feast of Assumption and the Discovery of the Box on the fifth Sunday after Pentecost. Prior to Catholicos Simeon's revision, these were listed as voluntary celebrations and most likely were celebrated only in Constantinople for a long period of time. Later in Western Armenia, not only were these commemorations celebrated but also so were others connected to the Holy Mother's personal items deemed relics. After the 13th century, when the Latin s established their empire in Constantinople by means of the crusades, many ecclesiastic antiques and relics were translated from Byzantine to Europe. Աստվածածնի գոտու գյուտի տոնը 1774 թվականին ներմուծել է Սիմեոն Երևանցի Հայրապետը, իր հրատարակած օրացույցի մեջ: Առհասարակ, Քրիստոսի Եկեղեցին թե` սրբերի մասունքների, թե` նրանց գործածած որոշ իրերի հանդեպ ունեցել է և այսօր էլ ունի յուրահատուկ վերաբերմունք: Աստվածաշունչը և եկեղեցական կյանքի փորձառությունը փաստում են, որ Ամենակարող Աստված իր զորությունը նաև այդ առարկաների միջոցով է արտահայտել: Սուրբգրային լավագույն վկայությունն այն դրվագն է, որտեղ ներկայացվում է, թե ինչպես մեռած մարդու դիակը, դիպչելով Եղիսե մարգարեի ոսկորներին, վերակենդանանում է: Ուստի, Եկեղեցին հարգանք ցուցաբերելով աստվածային զորությամբ օժտված իրերի նկատմամբ, դրանց միջոցով իր պաշտամունքն ու երկրպագությունն է մատուցում ճշմարիտ Աստծուն: TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS The first reading is from the 2nd Letter of Paul to the Corinthians (1:1-11) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation, who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God. For just as the sufferings of Christ are abundant for us, so also our consolation is abundant through Christ. If we are being afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation; if we are being consoled, it is for your consolation, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we are also suffering. Our hope for you is unshaken; for we know that as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our consolation. We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, of the affliction we experienced in Asia; for we were so utterly, unbearably crushed that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death so that we would rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He who rescued us from so deadly a peril will continue to rescue us; on him we have set our hope that he will rescue us again, as you also join in helping us by your prayers, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many. The reading is from the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Mark (4:35-40) On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, Let us go across to the other side. And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?

4 Dear Parishioners: We are excited to let you know of the progress we have made in building the Harry and Edna Keleshian Hall. See attached pictures of the work done: location of the new playground is complete, and the 18 parking spaces and the building is in progress. It will be ready for when we have our picnic and many activities are planned in this area for our children at the picnic. For the New Hall structure: By early-august we should be ready to have structure delivered to site. As you know we will need to raise $700,000 to complete the project. Harry always encouraged us to donate through a matching process, as he firmly believed that ALL parishioners should participate in any fund raising drive. In 2014, Harry pledged that he would increase his donation by 60% by matching up to $200,000 of any additional funds we raised for the Hall. Let¹s not lose this special pledge to get us to our goal. It is never too late to add to your donation and again we appreciate anything you can do to help us create this hall for our future generations. God bless you and your family! Helping the Parishioners of Baton Rouge's Armenian Church Last week, the Diocese called on all its parishes to hold a special collection on Sunday, August 21, for victims of the severe flooding in the state of Louisiana. At this time, the Diocese has received detailed information on the status of four Armenian families, parishioners of the local St. Garabed Church, who have suffered in the aftermath of the natural disaster. Three families were forced to flee their homes, and one parishioner his business in the wake of the flood. In a directive issued earlier this week, Diocesan Primate Archbishop Khajag Barsamian is asking all parishes to conduct additional plate collections in the coming weeks for our Armenian Christian brothers and sisters. Other fundraising drives parishes wish to organize as part of this relief effort are also welcome. All funds collected should be sent to the Diocesan Center no later than Friday, September 16.
