2 COMMEMORATION OF STS. MARTYRS GORDIOS, POGHIKTOS AND GRIGORIS Gordios was a Captain from Caesaria. His parents were pious Christians. He served in the Royal Army during the reign of the Emperor Diocletian s. Witnessing many cases of unfairness and injustice, he was isolated and devoted himself to God. When the Emperor Likianus started the persecutions against Christians, Gordios went to Caesaria and confessed to the heathen crowd that he was Christian and started to preach them the Truth. He was imprisoned and forced to offer sacrifice to the idols. But St. Gordios remained unshaken in his faith. After severe torments he passed away in 320 AD. Christians gathered his relics and buried them. Poghiktos is the first martyr of the Armenian town Melitene. Thanks to his friend he adopted Christianity. He prohibited the reading of the King s Charter before the idols and tore it into pieces. For that deed he was martyred being beheaded. in 259 AD. Grigoris has been martyred in 549 AD as the result of persecutions of the Persian king Denshapouh. Grigoris was Persian by nationality. Before baptism his name was Manajihr. During the reign of the Armenian Governor Mzhezh Gnouni he left for Armenia and was baptized and received a new name Grigoris. Afterwards he entered a monastery and began to lead monastic life. When the King Denshapouh came to Armenia and found out that in the past Grigoris had been fire-worshipper, forced him to return to his old faith. But St. Grigoris did not betray Christ and was martyred. Սուրբ Վկաներ Գորդիոսի, Պողիկտոսի և Գրիգորիսի հիշատակության օր Գորդիոսը Կեսարացի հարյուրապետ էր, քրիստոնյա ծնողների զավակ: Նա պաշտոնավարում էր կայսեր բանակում Դիոկղետիանոսի օրոք: Ականատես լինելով բազում անօրենությունների` նա գնում է անապատ` իրեն նվիրելով Աստծուն: Երբ Լիկիանոս կայսրը սկսում է հալածել քրիստոնյաներին, Գորդիոսը գնում է Կեսարիա և հեթանոս բազմությանը խոստովանում, որ ինքը քրիստոնյա է ու սկսում քարոզել Ճշմարտությունը: Նրան ձերբակալում են և ստիպում, որ կուռքերին զոհեր մատուցի: Սակայն Սուրբն անդրդվելի էր: Բազում չարչարանքներից հետո նա 320 թվականին ավանդում է հոգին: Քրիստոնյաները հավաքում են նրա ոսկորներն ու պատվով հողին հանձնում: Պողիկտոսը հայկական Մելիտինե քաղաքի առաջին նահատակն է: Իր ընկերոջ շնորհիվ դարձի է գալիս և ընդունում քրիստոնեություն: Գրիգորիսը նահատակվել է 549 թվականին Դենշապուհի հալածանքների ժամանակ: Մժեժ Գնունի հայ մարզպանի օրոք փախչում է Հայաստան, մկրտվում` վերանվանվելով Գրիգորիս: Հեռանում է վանք` իրեն նվիրելով վանական կյանքին:

3 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS The reading is from the first Epistle of St. Paul to the Timothy (4:12-5:10) Don t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. The second reading is from the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to John (3:13-21) No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

7 îüúððü¾ø / CHRISTMAS HOME BLESSING From the earliest times, the home was a sacred place, the center of family and ritual life. It is the most basic of all social structures, where we are born and live many years, a place where great family events transpire. Here we break bread, share joys and sorrows, pray, celebrate, worship. Here God is present in the loving relationships that transcend fragile human existence. Every family is a miniature of a Little Church Ecclesia and in this Little Church the inexhaustible love and the very generous blessing of God permeate. According to the sacred traditions of the Armenian Church, God s blessing is asked for homes on different occasions, like on the Nativity and the Resurrection of Christ, as well as on the joyous occasion of moving into a new home. During the Home Blessing the priest blesses the bread (which symbolically represents the Word of God), the water (which is the most essential element of life and figuratively represents cleanness) and the salt (which seasons and purifies). These three fundamental elements are essential life-giving gifts for human life. In the prayer the priest asks for purity and abundance of the three gifts, blesses the home and all its dwellers, and asks God to keep them away from visible and invisible enemies, and protect them under His powerful right hand, granting them health of soul and body. She received her first masters from University of Venice Ca Foscari and her second masters from the Cultural Studies Department at Sabanci University in Istanbul. Her recent project entitled Chungusabadoum traces her great grandfather's roots to the village of Chungus, Turkey and how she met the great granddaughter of one of the perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide from that very same village. Eric Shahinian, Columbia Film School graduate, Independent Filmmaker, director of Chunkoosh Abadoom, will also accompany her.
