2 ÚÇß³ï³Ï ºÕdzÛÇ Ù³ñ ³ñ ÇÝ Remembrance of the Prophet Elijah The Prophet Elijah was a biblical prophet who lived in the 9th century B.C.E. in the Kingdom of Israel during the reign of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, who ruled either between 869 B.C.E. and 850 B.C.E. or between 874 B.C.E. and 853 B.C.E., depending on which scholarly historical analysis one follows. Elijah was an important Israelite prophet whose name in Hebrew means my Lord is Jehovah. Elijah is regarded as a reformer prophet his purpose was to call the Israelites back to the worship of Yahweh and away from the evil pagan religious cults that were growing in popularity. The conflicts between Elijah and the priests of Baal are struggles to see which is stronger: Hebrew monotheism or pagan polytheism. According to 2 Kings, Elijah was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire. Jewish tradition has it, then, that Elijah is not really dead he continues to wander the earth and will reappear once again when it is time to announce the arrival of the Messiah. For this reason many early Christians identified John the Baptist with Elijah because John announced the arrival of Jesus. Elijah is mentioned three more times in the New Testament: in Luke, Romans, and James. In Luke 4:24-27, Jesus uses Elijah as an example of rejected prophets. Jesus says, "No prophet is accepted in his own country," and then mentions Elijah, saying that there were many widows in Israel, but Elijah was sent to one in Phoenicia. In Romans 11:1-6, Paul cites Elijah as an example of God's never forsaking his people (the Israelites). In James 5:16-18, James says, "The prayer of a righteous man availed much," and then cites Elijah's prayers which started and ended the famine in Israel, as examples of such prayers. Elijah makes an appearance in the New Testament during the Transfiguration. The disciples who are with Jesus hear the voice of God announce that He is "My beloved Son." The disciples also see Moses and Elijah appear and talk with Jesus. In this appearance, Elijah is generally seen as a witness of the prophets and Moses as a witness of the law for the divinely announced "Son of God." 3 Կը կատարուի Եղիայի մարգարէութիւնը և երեք տարիներ ետք մարգարէն նորէն կը ներկայանայ Աքաաբին: Կը ապացուցէ կռապաշտներու անզորութիւնը, և աղօթքով կ այրէ իր ողջակեզի կրակը, ապա կը դիմէ Աստծոյ որ հորդառատ անձրեւ բերէ: Եղիայ մարգարէին կը վերագրեն զանազան հրաշագործութիւններ: Հայ Առաքելական Եկեղեցւոյ տօնելի սրբերի շարքում Եղիայ մարգարէին առանձնայատուկ տեղ կը յատկացուի: Ի տարբերութիւն միւս սրբերու, ում յիշատակութիւնը կը տօնուի շաբաթուայ օրերուն, Եղիայ մարգարէի յիշատակութիւնը կը կատարուի Հոգեգալուստին յաջորդող կիրակի օրը: TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS The reading is from the Letter of James (5:16 20) Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects. Elijah was a man of like nature with ourselves and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit. My brethren, if any one among you wanders from the truth and some one brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. THE HOLY GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (4:25-30) Our Lord Jesus Christ: But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine over all the land; and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. And they rose up and put him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw him down headlong. But passing through the midst of them he went away.

MER DOON SUMMER PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN 3-6 This program is designed for children ages 3-6 to take place at our school from Monday to Friday, June 22 26, Daily sessions begin at 9:00AM and conclude at 12 Noon. Children will learn Armenian songs, dance, key words and simple useful sentences, Armenian prayers and elementary Armenian cultural facts. Experienced teachers constitute the staff. Sessions are held in safe environment with the loving care of the teachers. We need to know by April 15 your wish to register your child/ren. 5 LOOKING FOR A SUMMER JOB? 85 year old senior, a resident in Rye, is looking for a driver. It is a part time responsibility to drive him to meetings or errands in Rye.
