2 The Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ On Thursday, May 14, the Armenian Church will be celebrating the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord. Following His Resurrection and defeat of death, Christ remained on earth for forty days, and continued to appear to His disciples. On the fortieth day, Christ was seen by His disciples for the last time. He blessed them and left them with instructions, after which He ascended into heaven. Two of the Gospel writers, St. Mark and St. Luke, testify about Christ's ascension. In the Armenian Church, the day of Jesus Christ's Ascension is also commemorated for another reason as well. On this date in 1441, the See of the Catholicosate of All Armenians was returned to its historical origins. Following a resolution of the National Assembly gathered in Vagharshapad, the Patriarchal See was relocated from the city of Sis in Western Armenia to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. Following his vision of Christ striking the ground with a golden hammer, St. Gregory the Illuminator had founded the Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin in 303. However, less than 200 years later, in 484, the Patriarchal See was forced to relocate, and for the next 1000 years, settled in various cities throughout Armenia. We pray that our Lord always bless you and grant the gifts of the Holy Spirit to you according to your great hearts. May the Lord grant eternal rest to all deceased mothers. 4 HISTORY OF MOTHER S DAY Origin of Mothers Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek & Romans. But the roots of Mothers Day history can also be traced in UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US. Today the festival of the Mothers Day is celebrated across 46 countries (though on different days). Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support and well-wisher. The idea of official celebration of Mothers Day in the US was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe in An activist, writer & poet Julia shot to fame with her famous Civil War song, Battle Hymn of the Republic. She suggested that June 2nd be annually celebrated as Mothers Day and be dedicated to peace. Julia tirelessly championed the cause of the celebration of Mothers Day & declaration of official holiday on the day. Her idea spread but was later replaced by the Mothers Day now celebrated in May. Anna Jarvis is recognized as the founder of Mothers Day in the US. Though she never married & never had kids, she is also known as the Mother of Mothers Day, an apt title for the lady who worked hard to bestow honor on all mothers. Anna got the inspiration of celebrating Mothers Day from her own mother, who was an activist & who expressed her desire that someday all mothers, living & dead, be honored and be paid tribute for the contributions made by them. When Anna s mother died in 1905, Anna resolved to fulfill her mother s desire. Anna began by sending carnations to the church service in their home town, honoring her mother. Carnations were her mother s favorite flower, and Anna felt they symbolized a mother s pure love. Later Anna along with her supporters, wrote letters to people in position lobbying for the official declaration of Mothers Day holiday. By 1911, Mothers Day was celebrated in almost every state in the Union, & on May 8, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the 2 nd Sunday in May as Mother s Day. Today, Mothers Day is celebrated in several countries. The day has become hugely popular, & in several countries phone lines witness maximum traffic. There is also tradition of gifting flowers, cards & other gifts to mothers on Mothers Day. People take the day as an opportunity to pay tribute to their mothers & thank them for all their love & support. MER DOON SUMMER PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN 3-6 This program is designed for children ages 3-6 to take place at our school from Monday to Friday, June 22 26, Daily sessions begin at 9:00AM and conclude at 12 Noon. Children will learn Armenian songs, dance, key words and simple useful sentences, Armenian prayers and elementary Armenian cultural facts. Experienced teachers constitute the staff. Sessions are held in safe environment with the loving care of the teachers. We need to know by April 15 your wish to register your child/ren. 5 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS THE EPISTLE READING IS FROM 1 JOHN 3:2-6 Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Everyone who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him. THE HOLY GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (9:39-10:10) Jesus said, I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind. Some of the Pharisees near him heard this and said to him, Surely we are not blind, are we? Jesus said to them, If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, We see, your sin remains. Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers. Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
