2 Palm Sunday Palm Sunday is the feast of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem, when Christ was hailed by the people as the Messiah and New King of Israel. As He entered the city on a donkey the people waved branches and cried: "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!" (Zech. 9:9) Christ came to Jerusalem in fulfillment of the prophecies and having chosen the way of the Cross, invited the faithful to witness His passion that they might share in His Resurrection. On this day palms are blessed in church and distributed to the people. The Armenian Church calls this feast Dzaghgazart ; that is, adornment with flowers, because on that day the faithful receive blessed young branches of palm, representing the crowd who cheered Christ s arrival in Jerusalem by laying down branches before Him. In the service of the Opening of the Doors which will be performed right after the Liturgy, the priest and people pray for entry once again into God's glorious Kingdom and wait for the church to symbolically open its doors just as Christ, through the raising of Lazarus, opened the doors for the resurrection of humanity. There was a time when the faithful would actually gather outside the church building and ritually enter. In fact, in earlier days in Jerusalem, a procession would begin in Bethany and come to stand at the actual gates of the city. After a service of prayer, chanting, and song, the gates would be opened and the faithful would proceed to worship. Today, the clergy and congregation kneel before the closed altar curtain and beseech God to "Open the gates of virtue." (Psalm 119) Ծաղկազարդ. And behold, two blind men sitting by the roadside, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, Have mercy on us, Son of David! The crowd rebuked them, telling them to be silent; but they cried out the more, Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David! and Jesus stopped and called them, saying, What do you want me to do for you? They said to him, Lord, let our eyes be opened. And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they received their sight and followed him. And when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If any one says anything to you, you shall say, `The Lord has need of them,' and he will send them immediately. This took place to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

4 Tell the daughter of Zion, Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of an ass. The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the ass and the colt, and put their garments on them, and he sat thereon. Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him shouted, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! And when he entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, Who is this? And the crowds said, This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee. And Jesus entered the temple of God and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. He said to them, It is written, `My house shall be called a house of prayer'; but you make it a den of robbers. And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, Hosanna to the Son of David! they were indignant; and they said to him, Do you hear what these are saying? And Jesus said to them, Yes; have you never read, `Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings you have brought perfect praise'? And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there. Upcoming April 26, 2015 Badarak at St. Vartan & Times Square Gathering In commemoration of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide there will be a joint, united Divine Liturgy in New York City at St. Vartan on Sunday, April 26, 2015, presided by Archbishop Khajag Barsamian and Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, followed by the Times Square Gathering, "100 Years to Remember." St. Gregory will not have a Divine Liturgy on April 26, as all the clergy and parishioners are invited to participate at St. Vartan. Our parish is planning to charter a bus to the event. OPENING OF ALTAR CURTAIN / Turunpatzek - TODAY The Altar Curtain is reopened today on Palm Sunday. The Service of the Opening of the Doors (Turunpatzek) will be held after the Divine Liturgy. We celebrate Divine Liturgy with an open altar curtain today, then redraw the curtain for Holy Week. It remain closed until it is reopened for the celebration of Divine Liturgy on Holy Thursday and for the celebration of Christ s Glorious Victory and Resurrection on Holy Easter.

5 Easter Lilies Parishioners who wish to make a contribution for Easter lilies that will grace the Holy Altar and the sanctuary can give their donations to Parish Council members by March 29.

6 MER DOON SUMMER PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN 3-6 This program is designed for children ages 3-6 to take place at our school from Monday to Friday, June 22 26, Daily sessions begin at 9:00AM and conclude at 12 Noon. Children will learn Armenian songs, dance, key words and simple useful sentences, Armenian prayers and elementary Armenian cultural facts. Experienced teachers constitute the staff. Sessions are held in safe environment with the loving care of the teachers. We need to know by April 15 your wish to register your child/ren.
