2 RED SUNDAY In the Calendar of the Armenian Church, the third Sunday following the Glorious Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ is known as Red Sunday. The color red has been used throughout history to represent many things. One of the symbolic meanings is the blood of the martyrs who were sacrificed for Christ, His Holy Church, and their Christian faith. During the early years of Christianity, faithful followers of Jesus Christ were subjected to severe persecutions and torments. Many elected to die rather than betray their principles of life and faith, which the Incarnate God - Christ Jesus - had endowed to them and all of mankind. The psalmist writes, Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of the saints. Today, martyrdom is far less often an occurrence in the lives of Christians, yet it does happen. However, the greater struggle is the one against sin, which we can see manifested in many ways throughout the world. The battle against wickedness and evil, which will be victorious in the end, is the current expression of the significance of Red Sunday. The Apostle Paul writes that Christ Himself endured such opposition, that we should not grow weary in our battle against wickedness. In his letter to the Hebrews, Paul says: In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.. We are to use the opportunity of Red Sunday to once again remind ourselves of Paul s exhortation to remain steadfast in the Lord, and to continue our daily labors of goodness and righteousness. Զատիկին հաջորդող կիրակիներն հատուկ խորհրդանշական անվանումներ ունեն: Զատիկի չորրորդ կիրակին կոչվում է Կարմիր: Կարմիրը Քրիստոսի եկեղեցու եւ հավատի համար մարտիրոսացած նահատակների սուրբ արյան խորհրդանիշն է: Քրիստոնեության վաղ շրջանում, երբ քրիստոնյաները դաժան հալածանքներ էին ենթարկվում, շատերը գերադասեցին մեռնել, քան դավաճանել հավատի այն սկզբունքներին, որ մարդկությանն ավանդել էր մարդացյալ Աստված` Քրիստոս: «Տիրոջ աչքում հարգելի է մահն իր սրբերի»: Սակայն այսօր նահատակության անհրաժեշտություն չկա, եւ արյուն թափելը, մահը, պայքարն ու հաղթանակն այլ իմաստ են ձեռք բերել ընդդեմ մեղքի ու չարիքի: «Չլինի թե հոգնեք և հուսալքվեք, դուք, որ կռվի մեջ դեռ արյուն թափելու չափ չհակառակվեցիք մեղքին», - ասում է Պողոս առաքյալը եւ իբրեւ պատգամ բոլոր քրիստոնյաներին խրատում. «Նա, որ մեռավ, մեղքի համար մեռավ մեկընդմիշտ, եւ նա, որ կենդանի է, կենդանի է Աստծո համար: Նույնպես եւ դուք ձեզ մեռած համարեցեք մեղքի համար, բայց կենդանի Աստծո համար, մեր Տեր Հիսուս Քրիստոսով»:

3 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS The first reading is from the First Letter of Peter (5:1-14) Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it not for sordid gain but eagerly. Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you. Discipline yourselves, keep alert. Like a roaring lion your adversary the devil prowls around, looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in your faith, for you know that your brothers and sisters in all the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the power forever and ever. Amen. The second reading is from Holy Gospel according to John (5:19-30) Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise. The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will show him greater works than these, so that you will be astonished. Indeed, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes. The Father judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son, so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgment, but has passed from death to life. Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself; and he has given him authority to judge, because he is the Son of Man.

This is a wonderful way to honor a special occasion, milestone event, marriage, new baby, in tribute to, in memory of, etc. Each leaf is 2 x 3 and can be engraved with 20 characters on each of four lines. The cost per leaf is $500. (payable to: St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church) For each leaf sold the Parish Council will donate $10 to the ACYOA Juniors. May God touch His faithful servants with His healing hand, and grant them good health & recovery. Please inform Der Hayr if you have friends or family who are suffering any physical or spiritual distress and are in need of prayer, and he will add them to his prayer list where they will be remembered before the Holy and Immortal Lamb of God during the Eucharist. We all need prayer both to say for others and to be said for us.

Everyone is invited to attend the Pontifical Liturgy at St. Vartan Cathedral celebrated by the Catholigos of all Armenians Karekin II. Reservations required for the Fellowship Hour that follows Badarak. Please see below. In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Diocese, there will be a standing buffet fellowship reception following the Pontifical Badarak on Sunday, May 6. Voskan has completed the acculturation program at St. Nersess Seminary, English lessons at Westchester Community College, and internship at Armenian Church of the Holy Ascension (Trumbull, CT) with Fr. Untzag Nalbandian. He will be relocating to Holy Virgin Mary & Shoghagat Armenian Church, Belleville, IL in May to complete his internship.
