2 COMMEMORATION OF THE PROPHET ELIJAH Prophet Elijah is one of the major prophets of the Old Testament, distinguished for his loyalty to the Lord, for his zealous struggle against idolatry spread in Israel by the apostate king Ahab and his idolatrous wife, Queen Jezebel. Prophet Elijah lived in the IX century B.C. In the First Book of Kings (17-18) and the Second Book of Kings (1-2) is told about the activity of the Prophet Elijah. Evangelists also mention the name of the Prophet Elijah. In the First Book of Kings it is told that being the true herald of the Word of God Elijah, by the Lord s will appeared before the apostate king Ahab and warned about the upcoming drought. His prophecy came true and after three years the Prophet again went to the king Ahab. Proving the weakness of the idolatrous, Prophet Elijah prayed God asking to send down fire for the sacrifice and a heavy rain. It is also told that thanks to the divine grace the Prophet Elijah helped the widow in Zarephath making so that her bowl wouldn t run out of flour and her jar wouldn t run of oil, also restored the widow s dead sun to life. ԵՂԻԱՅ ՄԱՐԳԱՐԷԻ ՅԻՇԱՏԱԿՈՒԹԻՒՆ Եղիան Հին Կտակարանի մեծ մարգարէ մըն է, որ յայտնի է Տիրոջ հանդեպ ունեցած հաւատարմութեամբ: Ան պայքարած է կռապաշտութեան դէմ, որ Իսրայելի մէջ սերմանուեց Աքաաբ թագաւորի կողմէ: Եղիայ մարգարէն ապրած և գործած է Քրիստոսէն առաջ 9-րդ դարում: Եղիայ մարգարէի անունը կը հիշատակեն աւետարանիչները: Թագաւորաց գրքին մէջ գրուած է, թե ինչպէս Եղիան, իբրև Աստծոյ խոսքի ճշմարիտ բանբեր, Տիրոջ տնօրինութեամբ կը յայտնուի հաւատուրաց Աքաաբի առջև և կը յայտարարէ սպասւող երաշտի մասին: Կը կատարուի Եղիայի մարգարէութիւնը և երեք տարիներ ետք մարգարէն նորէն կը ներկայանայ Աքաաբին: Կը ապացուցէ կռապաշտներու անզորութիւնը, և աղօթքով կ այրէ

3 իր ողջակեզի կրակը, ապա կը դիմէ Աստծոյ որ հորդառատ անձրեւ բերէ: Եղիայ մարգարէին կը վերագրեն զանազան հրաշագործութիւններ: Հայ Առաքելական Եկեղեցւոյ տօնելի սրբերի շարքում Եղիայ մարգարէին առանձնայատուկ տեղ կը յատկացուի: Ի տարբերութիւն միւս սրբերու, ում յիշատակութիւնը կը տօնուի շաբաթուայ օրերուն, Եղիայ մարգարէի յիշատակութիւնը կը կատարուի Հոգեգալուստին յաջորդող կիրակի օրը: TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS The first reading is from the Letter of James (5:16-20) Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects. Elijah was a man of like nature with ourselves and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit. My brethren, if any one among you wanders from the truth and some one brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. The second reading is from the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Luke (4:25-30) Our Lord Jesus Christ: But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine over all the land; and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. And they rose up and put him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw him down headlong. But passing through the midst of them he went away.

May God touch His faithful servants with His healing hand, and grant them good health & recovery. Please inform Der Hayr if you have friends or family who are suffering any physical or spiritual distress and are in need of prayer, and he will add them to his prayer list where they will be remembered before the Holy and Immortal Lamb of God during the Eucharist. We all need prayer both to say for others and to be said for us.
