2 SECOND PALM SUNDAY On the Sunday following the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord, the Armenian Church celebrates Second Palm Sunday. The name of the feast has been derived from Palm Sunday, which precedes Easter. In the week leading up to His betrayal, crucifixion and resurrection, the first Palm Sunday symbolized the triumphant entry of Christ into Jerusalem where people met Him with great joy and glorified His Holy Name. The Second Palm Sunday is the commemoration of the triumphant entry of the Ascended Christ into the Heavenly Jerusalem, where the angels meet him with great happiness and delight. According to tradition, during St. Gregory the Illuminator s imprisonment in the pit, he was visited every day by the same angel. However one day, the angel did not come. The following morning, St. Gregory inquires to the reason for his absence, to which the angel responds that during the Ascension, Christ had passed through the ranks of the Angels, and they celebrate that feast each year. The angel visiting St. Gregory was from the fourth class of angelic hosts, and thus, on the fourth day following the Ascension, his rank of angels commemorates and celebrates Christ s Ascension to heaven every year. Գրիգորը հարցնելով պատճառը, իմանում է, որ Համբարձման ժամանակ Հիսուս Քրիստոս անցել է հրեշտակների դասերի միջով: Լուսավորչին այցելող հրեշտակը չորրորդ դասից էր եւ Համբարձման չորրորդ օրը հրեշտակների այդ դասն ամեն տարի տոնում էր Քրիստոսի Համբարձվելը երկինք: Հայ Առաքելական Եկեղեցու մեծ աստվածաբան Գրիգոր Տաթեւացու մեկնության համաձայն, բացի հրեշտակաց ամենաստորին դասից, որոնք էլ հենց ծառայում էին Քրիստոսին Նրա երկրավոր կյանքում, հրեշտակների մյուս դասերը չգիտեին Տիրոջ փրկարար տնօրինության մասին մինչեւ Համբարձումը:

3 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS The first reading is from the First Letter of John 5:13-21 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us whatever we ask we know that we have what we asked of him. If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death. We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. The second reading is from the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to John 12:12-23 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel! Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey s colt." At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him. Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word.18 Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. So the Pharisees said to one another, See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him! Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. Sir, they said, we would like to see Jesus. Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. Jesus replied, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

4 BIBLE STUDY Come to explore together the pathways of the New Testament and to increase our faith and spiritual fulfillment through study of the Holy Scriptures led by Der Mesrob Hovsepyan. MER DOON SUMMER PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN 3-8 This program is designed for children ages 3-8 to take place at our school from Monday to Friday, June 26 30, Daily sessions begin at 9:00AM and conclude at 12 Noon. Children will learn Armenian songs, dance, key words and simple useful sentences, Armenian prayers and elementary Armenian cultural facts. Experienced teachers constitute the staff. Sessions are held in safe environment with the loving care of the teachers. We need to know by April 25 your wish to register your child/ren. We all need prayer both to say for others and to be said for us.

5 GRADUATES COLLEGE GRADUATES Emily Krolian - Daughter of Dennis and Ellie Krolian, is graduating from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. She will begin her residency in Prosthodontics in July, and is pursuing a Masters in Oral Health. Congratulations, Dr. Krolian! Adrena Ann Daw - Daughter of Tom and Ann Daw, will graduate in May 2017 from Manhattanville College with a Bachelor's degree with Honors in Political Science and History with a concentration in Criminal Law. She achieved Dean's list and received a Presidential Scholarship for all her years at Manhattanville. She was a member of the National Society for Leadership and Success. She wrote her Honors thesis on "The Politics Surrounding the Armenian Genocide". She was also a member of the Manhattanville Softball team and was on the MAC (Mid-Atlantic Conference) honor roll for academics in softball. Her team won the MAC Freedom conference and regionals in This year they are undefeated in their conference. Adrena's future plans are to go to Law School. She and Miguel Hernandez will be getting married in HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES Christopher Herman Benemio - Son of Frank V. Benemio and Virginia Mintanciyan Benemio, will be graduating on Monday, June 19, 2017 from The Academy of Information Technology & Engineering High School in Stamford, CT. In the fall of 2017, Christopher will be attending Pace University in Pleasantville, NY. He will be majoring in Computer Engineering and Minoring in Law Enforcement. Arman Joseph Vranka and William Ezra Vranka, - twin sons of Larry Vranka and Elizabeth Shaghalian Vranka, will graduate from Bronxville High School on June 17, In the fall, Arman will be attending The University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia. He has not yet declared a major. William will be enrolling in the Dyson Business School at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, this fall. 6 Home Blessing /Dnorhnek/ is a beautiful tradition of the Armenian Church which is performed on several occasions: namely after the feasts of Holy Nativity and Holy Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, as well as on the occasion of moving to a new home. Today, more than ever, we need the presence and blessing of the Lord in our homes and lives. The revival of this centuries old custom will certainly bring us close to our Lord. 7 H A P P Y I N D E P E N D E N C E D A Y Known as First Republic Day, May 28 embodies the resilience of survivors who, just three years after the Genocide, declared and sustained an independent Armenian Republic from 1918 to May is a month of victories for the Armenians. The history shows that the Armenian people erected all the most important victories in May. And now continuing the tradition of spring holidays, on May 28 we celebrate the independence of the First Republic of Armenia. MEMORIAL DAY MAY 29 On Memorial Day we remember fondly the brave men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is a day to show our love for the United States of America and pride for those who selflessly served to protect us from our enemies. It is the time to remember and honor those who risked their lives to protect us and the country. While we gather this weekend with family and friends to celebrate the beginning of the summer season, we should take a few moments to thank and pray for our soldiers who fought and died honorably for our freedom.
