2 of the Judge The fifth of Great Lent is called the of the Judge. The message of the day teaches us with the parable of the widow and the Judge. This parable comes to us in the Gospel of St. Luke (Luke 18:1-8). The parable tells the story of a widow who repeatedly came to a judge, who neither feared God nor respected man, and pled for her rights. For a long period of time the judge refused to act, but in the end, he fulfilled her request, to put an end to her continuous appeals. Otherwise, he feared that she would continue to return indefinitely. After telling this parable, the Lord assures everyone, that if a man as corrupt and unfair as this judge decided in favor of the widow, then God surely would judge in favor of his own people and grant the requests of all those who submit to Him through prayer. This parable exhorts us to always and continually pray, as prayer symbolizes the soul s eternal striving and thirst for God. The parable also contains an appeal from Christ. After telling the parable, Christ says: But will the Son of Man find faith on earth when He comes? In His words, Jesus gives a reference to the Second Coming, and sadness and anguish are felt in the Lord s remark. It is truly painful for the Savior that many people may be subject to just, yet cruel judgment, instead of becoming the inheritors of the Kingdom of God. ³ï³õáñÇ ÎÇñ³ÏÇÝ Մեծ Պահքի հինգերորդ կիրակին Դատաւորի կիրակին է: Այդ օրուան խորհուրդը կը բացատէ այրի կնոջ եւ դատաւորին առակը (Ղուկ. 18: 1-5): Առակին համաձայն այրի կին մը, անընդհատ կը խնդրէ Աստուծմէ չերկնչող եւ մարդոցմէ չվախեցող դատաւորին` իր դատը անելու: Դատաւորը կնոջէն ազատուելու համար ստիպուած կը բավարարէ անոր պահանջը: Այս առակը պատմելէն ետք Քրիստոս կը հաւաստիացնէ բոլորին, որ եթէ անարդար դատաւորը այրի կնոջ դատը տեսաւ, ապա Աստուած առաւել եւս կը կատարի բոլոր անոնց խնդրանքները, որոնք միշտ աղոթքով կը խնդրեն: Առակը կը հորդորէ ամեն ժամ աղօթել, որը կը խորհրդանշէ հոգու մշտական մղումը առ Աստուած, բայց միևնույն ժամանակ իրական աղոթքի կոչ է: Առակը պատմելեն ետք Քրիստոս կ ըսէ. «Իսկ երբ մարդու Որդին գա, արդյո ք երկրի վրա հավատ կգտնի» (Ղուկ. 18: 8): Առակին մէջ Հիսուսը երկրորդ գալստեան գաղափարը կը բացահատէ: Փրկիչի համար ցաւալի է, որ շատ մարդիկ կրնան

3 ենթարկուիլ ահեղ դատաստանի` արքաիւթեան ժառանգորդներ ըլլալու փոխարեն: TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS The Epistle reading is from Luke 17:20-18:14 (p. 108 New Testament Holy Bible in red color) The Coming of the Kingdom: Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed, nor will they say, Look, here it is! or There! for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you. And he said to the disciples, The days are coming when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. And they will say to you, Look, there! or Look, here! Do not go out or follow them. For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day. But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man. They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed. On that day, let the one who is on the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back. Remember Lot's wife. Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it. I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left. There will be two women grinding together. One will be taken and the other left. And they said to him, Where, Lord? He said to them, Where the corpse is, there the vultures [ will gather. 4 MER DOON SUMMER PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN 3-6 This program is designed for children ages 3-6 to take place at our school from Monday to Friday, June 22 26, Daily sessions begin at 9:00AM and conclude at 12 Noon. Children will learn Armenian songs, dance, key words and simple useful sentences, Armenian prayers and elementary Armenian cultural facts. Experienced teachers constitute the staff. Sessions are held in safe environment with the loving care of the teachers. We need to know by April 15 your wish to register your child/ren. 5 Tickets for the General Public for the Ecumenical Prayer Service The National Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide Centennial (NCAGC) in Washington, D.C., will open on Thursday, May 7, with an Ecumenical Prayer Service at the National Cathedral. Admittance to the prayer service is free of charge. However, for reasons of security, all attendees must register for the service in advance. Parishioners of the Eastern Diocese wishing to attend the Ecumenical Prayer Service must obtain tickets through the NCAGC committee by submitting the following information via to

6 Please note that a ticket MUST be issued for each person attending the prayer service. Tickets are NOT transferable. Seating at the National Cathedral is limited. Tickets will be issued by the NCAGC committee on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets will NOT be available at the door. Upcoming April 26, 2015 Badarak at St. Vartan & Times Square Gathering In commemoration of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide there will be a joint, united Divine Liturgy in New York City at St. Vartan on, April 26, 2015, presided by Archbishop Khajag Barsamian and Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, followed by the Times Square Gathering, "100 Years to Remember." St. Gregory will not have a Divine Liturgy on April 26, as all the clergy and parishioners are invited to participate at St. Vartan. Our parish is planning to charter a bus to the event. Details to follow regarding a possible bus trip to Washington D.C. on May 8/9, Arevakal Service Today the Sunrise Service (Arevakal) will be performed at the end of the Badarak. Arevakal Service booklets may be found in the church vestibule or in the pews for worshippers to follow during the service. Please join Fr. Mesrob, the altar servers and the choir members for this special Lenten service. CLOSING OF ALTAR CURTAIN: The Altar curtain was closed last on Poon Paregentan right after Badarak. It will remain closed throughout the Forty Days of Great Lent until it is reopened on Palm. The closing of the curtain symbolizes the Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. The entire church is in repentance during this time. During Lent the Divine Liturgy (Badarak) is celebrated with the Main Altar curtain closed. The Kiss of Peace is not given. Holy Communion is not given. In special circumstances, Holy Communion may be received by making arrangements with Der Hayr after the service. The Gospel is not kissed at the end of Divine Liturgy. Mas is distributed during Lent.
