2 SUNDAY OF THE WORLD CHURCH (GREEN SUNDAY) The second following the Glorious Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ is the of the World Church. It commemorates the first Church of Jerusalem, established by Christ. On the first day of the Jewish festival of Passover, Jesus instructs two of the Apostles, Peter and John, to go into Jerusalem and meet a man, who would direct them to a house where Christ and His Apostles could celebrate the Passover Feast. Peter and John are led to the Upper Room of a house, where they make the necessary preparations for the meal. Later that evening Christ and the Twelve Apostles sit together to eat supper. Christ speaks to them and says, I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer: For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the Kingdom of God. And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves: For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. (Lk 22:15-20) This Last Supper was the event where Jesus Christ established the Sacrament of Holy Communion, which we celebrate every during the Divine Liturgy in Armenian Churches throughout the world. The Upper Room in Jerusalem is considered to be the first Church, as founded by Christ. The of the World Church is also called Green, which according to Archbishop Malachia Ormanian, is the popular name of the feast and is linked with the awakening of nature in the springtime. 3 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS The first reading is from the First Letter of Peter 2:1-10 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. As you come to him, the living Stone rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame. Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, and, A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. They stumble because they disobey the message which is also what they were destined for. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. The second reading is from the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to John 2:23-3:12 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person. Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him. Jesus replied, Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again. How can someone be born when they are old? Nicodemus asked. Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother s womb to be born! Jesus answered, Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, "You must be born again." The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. How can this be? Nicodemus asked. You are Israel s teacher, said Jesus, and do you not understand these things? Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?

4 BIBLE STUDY Come to explore together the pathways of the New Testament and to increase our faith and spiritual fulfillment through study of the Holy Scriptures led by Der Mesrob Hovsepyan. May God touch His faithful servants with His healing hand, and grant them good health & recovery. Please inform Der Hayr if you have friends or family who are suffering any physical or spiritual distress and are in need of prayer, and he will add them to his prayer list where they will be remembered before the Holy and Immortal Lamb of God during the Eucharist. We all need prayer both to say for others and to be said for us.

5 MER DOON SUMMER PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN 3-8 This program is designed for children ages 3-8 to take place at our school from Monday to Friday, June 26 30, Daily sessions begin at 9:00AM and conclude at 12 Noon. Children will learn Armenian songs, dance, key words and simple useful sentences, Armenian prayers and elementary Armenian cultural facts. Experienced teachers constitute the staff. Sessions are held in safe environment with the loving care of the teachers. We need to know by April 25 your wish to register your child/ren. The nominal tuition of $100 per child will be charged with registration. Checks should be made to: ST. GREGORY ARMENIAN CHURCH, Memo: Mer Doon.

6 Special Plate collection to support Save the Tomb project. Recently the Tomb of Christ in Jerusalem was renovated. As you know the Armenian Church is one of the custodians of the Tomb, together with the Greek Orthodox Church and Roman Catholic Church. Our Eastern Diocese is presently raising funds for the renovation expenses of the Tomb of Christ. This is a privilege for every Christian to participate in this historic renovation. The Diocese has sent us wrist bands on which it says, Save at the Tomb. The Parish Council suggests that we each donate at least $10 for each wrist band which are placed in the narthex of our church. If you need help, please do not hesitate to ask the Council members. All the collected funds will go to the Diocese to be used for this specific purpose.
