2 FEAST OF ALL SAINTS - THE OLD AND THE NEW, THE KNOWN AND THE UNKNOWN On Saturday, October 31 st, our Church commemorated the memory of all those saints, whose names are not included in the Church Calendar, but whose names are registered in the sacred book of the Heavenly Kingdom. Many people have been subjected to severe torments and have been martyred during the wars for the sake of faith. Unfortunately, we do not know their names. So the Church has established this feast in the Church Calendar in order to commemorate their memory. They are persons who shed their blood for the sake of Christ and His Church. The Western Church celebrates this feast, All Saints' Day (also known as All Hallows), on October 31 st. Halloween or Hallowe'en (a contraction of "All Hallows' Evening"), also known as All Hallows' Eve, a yearly celebration on October 31 is thought to have influence on Halloween. Կաթողիկոսին Ամենայն Հայոց 17th Anniversary of the Enthronment of Karekin II, Catholicos of all Armenians. His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, is the 132 nd successor to Saint Gregory the Illuminator, and occupies the throne of St. Gregory in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. The Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians is the worldwide spiritual leader for Armenians both in Armenia and in the Dispersion. The supreme head of the Church is Jesus Christ. In the hierarchy of the Armenian Apostolic Church the Catholicos, a Greek term signifying Universal Leader of the Church, ranks higher than Patriarchs, Archbishops and Bishops in the Armenian Church. He is typically chosen from the College of

3 Bishops, and once elected is regarded as the First Among Equals." The Catholicos is consecrated by 12 bishops and elected for life. The 17 th anniversary of the consecration and enthronement of His Holiness Karekin II will be marked on October 30 th at St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral. TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS The first reading is from the Second Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 1:1-14 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God s grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfilment to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ. In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God s possession to the praise of his glory. The second reading is from the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Luke 8:17-21 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them. Now Jesus mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. Someone told him, Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you. He replied, My mother and brothers are those who hear God s word and put it into practice.

6 ACOLYTE TRAINING SESSIONS All boys (ages 8 and over) and girls (ages 8-12) who are interested in becoming altar servers are encouraged to attend the Acolyte Training Program that Fr. Mesrob will start in October. Nov. 13; Time: 12:30 PM in the sanctuary The Acolyte s Training Program is tailored for young boys/girls who would like to learn to participate in the liturgical services of the Armenian Church as altar servers. We will train them to serve as acolytes on Sundays and prepare for future ordination as acolytes (tubeers) and later as deacons. Knowledge of Armenian is not a prerequisite to join the program. For more information or sign up your child(ren) please talk to Fr. Mesrob. May God touch His faithful servants with His healing hand, and grant them good health & recovery. Please inform Der Hayr if you have friends or family who are suffering any physical or spiritual distress and are in need of prayer, and he will add them to his prayer list where they will be remembered before the Holy and Immortal Lamb of God during the Eucharist. We all need prayer both to say for others and to be said for us.

There will be a special service honoring the 17th anniversary of His Holiness enthronement as Catholicos of All Armenians. Banquet to follow.
