2 SUNDAY OF EXPULSION The second Sunday of the period of Great lent is called the Sunday of Expulsion. The basis of the mystery of and the name of the day can be found in the Holy Bible, the Book of Genesis: So the Lord God sent him out of the Garden of Eden and made him cultivate the soil from which he had been formed (Genesis 3:23). Prehistory is the following. The human being, listening to the deceitful words of Satan, disobeyed the divine commandments and ate the forbidden fruit, As punishment the human being, the human being, of course, didn t die at once, but was deprived of the eternity granted by God and was cursed Since then man must work hard and sweat to make the soil produce enough food, and woman will have pain in giving birth to her offspring. And in end God said to the human being: You were made from soil and you will become soil again (Genesis 3:19). The church Fathers have given the Sundays of the Period of great lent such names and mysteries which symbolize the mankind s way of life birth, sinning, regret and repentance. This should serve for the human being as an occasion for thinking of himself/herself and his/ her lifer so that the period of great Lent should be fruitful and productive. ԱՐՏԱՔՍՄԱՆ ԿԻՐԱԿԻ Մեծ Պահքի երկրոդ կիրակին կոչվում է նաև Արտաքսման: Օրվա խորհրդի և անվան մասին Աստվածաշունչ մատյանի Ծննդոց Գրքում գրված է. «Եվ արտաքսեց նրան Աստված Եդեմի պարտեզից, որպեսզի մշակի հողը, որից և ստեղծվել էր»: Նախապատմությունը հետևյալն է. մարդն ունկնդիր լինելով Սատանայի խաբեբայական խոսքերին, պատվիրանազանց գտնվելով` համտեսեց արգելված պտղից: Որպես պատիժ, մարդն իհարկե, անմիջապես չմահացավ, սակայն զրկվեց Աստծո կողմից շնորհված անմահությունից և անիծվեց: Այսուհետ, մարդն իր քրտինքով պետք է վաստակի օրվա հացը և կինը պետք է ցավով ու տառապանքով զավակ ունենա և վերջում էլ ասվեց նրան. «...հող էիր և հող կդառնաս»: Եկեղեցական հայրերն իմաստուն կերպով Քառասնորդաց Պահքի շրջանի կիրակիներն այնպես են դասավորել և այնպիսի անվանումներ ու խորհուրդներ տվել, որոնցով ի հայտ է գալիս մարդկության կյանքի ուղին ծնունդ, մեղսագործություն, զղջում, ապաշխարանք: Սա ինքնին մարդուն խորհելու ևս մեկ առիթ է սեփական անձին անդրադառնալու, պահոց շրջանն արդյունավետ անցկացնելու համար:

3 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS The first reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to Romans 12: Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God s wrath, for it is written: It is mine to avenge; I will repay, says the Lord. On the contrary: If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. The second reading is from the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew (5:17-48) Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

5 ACOLYTE TRAINING SESSIONS All boys (ages 8 and over) and girls (ages 8-12) who are interested in becoming altar servers are encouraged to attend the Acolyte Training Program that Fr. Mesrob has started in October. March 5; Time: 12:30 PM in the sanctuary For more information or sign up your child(ren) please talk to Fr. Mesrob. BIBLE STUDY Come to explore together the pathways of the New Testament and to increase our faith and spiritual fulfillment through study of the Holy Scriptures led by Der Mesrob Hovsepyan. May God touch His faithful servants with His healing hand, and grant them good health & recovery. Please inform Der Hayr if you have friends or family who are suffering any physical or spiritual distress and are in need of prayer, and he will add them to his prayer list where they will be remembered before the Holy and Immortal Lamb of God during the Eucharist. We all need prayer both to say for others and to be said for us.

6 CLOSING OF ALTAR CURTAIN: The curtain of the Altar was closed yesterday, on the Eve of Poon Paregentan. It will remain closed throughout the forty days of Great Lent until it is reopened on Palm Sunday. The closing of the curtain symbolizes the Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. The entire church is in repentance during this time. During Lent the Divine Liturgy (Badarak) is celebrated with the Main Altar curtain closed. The Kiss of Peace is not given. Holy Communion is not given. In special circumstances, Holy Communion may be received by making arrangements with Der Hayr after the service. The Gospel is not kissed at the end of Divine Liturgy. Mas is distributed during Lent. Walk Thru the Old Testament on March 18! Sponsored by the Diocesan Department of Christian Education and hosted by St. Leon Armenian Church in Fair Lawn, NJ, Walk Thru the Bible - Old Testament is open to all adults and young adults (children ages 8 and up are welcome to accompany their parents). Participants will learn about major people, places, and events, discovering how the Old Testament ultimately leads to the cross.
