Easter Vigil Mass St Teresa of Avila April 19, 2014
Easter Vigil Mass The rubrics remind us that this mother of all vigils is the greatest and most noble of all solemnities and it is to be unique in every single Church (Roman Missal, Rubrics for the Easter Vigil, no. 2). On this holy night, the Church keeps watch, celebrating the resurrection of Christ in the sacraments and awaiting his return in glory. It is the turning point of the Triduum, the Passover of the new covenant, which marks Christ s passage from death to life. Therefore, the Easter Vigil does not correspond to the usual Saturday evening Mass and its character is unique in the cycle of the liturgical year.
Solemn Beginning of the Vigil: Lucernareum (Service of Light) (page 154) The Easter Vigil begins with the lighting of a new Paschal fire in the presence of the assembly The fire is blessed by Father Ingram and the Paschal Candle is prepared and lighted from the new fire
Preparation of the Paschal Candle (page 156) The priest may say the following in whole or in part as he scribes the design into the candle: Christ yesterday and today the Beginning and the End the Alpha, and the Omega. All time belongs to him and all the ages. To him be glory and power through every age for ever. Amen The priest may insert five grains of incense into the candle, held in place by wax nails: 1. By his holy 1 2. and glorious wounds may Christ our Lord 3 4. guard us 5. and keep us. Amen Priest: May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds
Service of the Light (page 156) Procession ( in darkness) At the door of the church, the deacon takes the Easter candle, lifts it high and sings alone: All answer: The light of Christ Thanks be to God Then all enter the church, led by the deacon with the Easter candle.
Service of Light Procession In the middle of the church, the deacon lifts the candle high and sings a second time: The light of Christ All answer: Thanks be to God
Service of Light Procession When the deacon arrives before the altar, he faces the people and sings a third time: The light of Christ All answer: Thanks be to God Then the lights of the church are turned on
Easter Proclamation (Exsultet) (page 156, 158, 160) When he comes to the Altar, the priest goes to his chair The deacon places the Easter candle in its stand near the ambo (lectern) The deacon asks the blessing of the priest, who says in a low voice: The Lord be in your heart and on your lips, that you may worthily proclaim the Easter praise. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The candle is incensed
The Easter Proclamation ( Exsultet) In this ancient text the Church gives thanks and praise to God for all that is recalled this night: Adam s fall The deliverance from Egypt The Passover of Christ The wedding of Heaven and earth Our reconciliation
