2 TODAY S GOSPEL READING Այսօրվա Ավետարանը Matthew 22:34-23:39 34 When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35 and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? 37 He said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: 42 What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he? They said to him, The son of David. 43 He said to them, How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, 44 The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet? 45 If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son? 46 No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions. 23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses seat; 3 therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. 4 They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,[c] and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. 5 They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. 6 They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, 7 and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi. 8 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. 9 And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father the one in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted. 13 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them. 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. There is truly great power in prayer. During this Divine Liturgy and throughout this next week your prayers are requested: For the spiritual growth of The Armenian Apostolic Church at Hye Pointe; For more young men to hear the Lord s call to service into the Holy Priesthood of the Armenian Church; For other young men and women also to hear God s call to serve His Church. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel! 25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean. 27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. 28 So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous, 30 and you say, If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets. 31 Thus you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your ancestors. 33 You snakes, you brood of vipers! 4 ALTAR DONATIONS Նվիրատվություններ Սուրբ Խորանին Parishioners requesting Altar Flowers and Candles for any occasion or Sunday should approach a member of the Parish Council for an Altar Flower or Candle Donation form. Name of the donor will be listed in the weekly Bulletin and Newsletter. Requests for the Altar Donations can also be done by calling or ing the Church. MAKE A DONATION TO YOUR CHURCH The Armenian Apostolic Church at Hye Pointe has developed an option for those who wish to make a donation to their church in the form of stocks, bonds, mutual funds or other securities. The church has established a brokerage account and for those individuals who wish to make such a donation. The church will benefit by the donation, and you as the donor will receive a tax deduction for your donation. It is a win win for both your church and yourself. Please contact a Parish Council for more details if you are interested. Church Office: In the event church services need to be canceled due to weather conditions, notification may be seen on WBZ- TV, Channel 4 Every Sunday after the Divine Liturgy we are having fellowship hour. Everyone is welcome to join us for a cup of coffee and more and a treat as you linger and fellowship with others. We thank Lu Sirmaian, one of our Parish Council members, for coordinating the fellowship hour every Sunday. This Sunday April 2, The fellowship hour is organized by the Sunday School. Dear Parishioners, We treasure your enthusiasm and curiosity regarding the new construction at The Armenian Apostolic Church at Hye Pointe. However, this is an active construction jobsite requiring health and safety compliance. We kindly request that you refrain from visiting the site during normal working hours (Monday - Friday 7am - 6pm). During this construction phase the property is controlled by and the responsibility of Channel Building Company, since they are liable for any damages or injuries until the project is completed in late January If you would like to take a tour of the building, please contact Myles Couyoumjian at cell or myles.couyoumjian@franke.com. 5 Diocese Now Accepting Scholarship Applications Sunday of Advent Applications for Diocesan scholarships are now available online. The application deadline for the academic year is May 20, Each year the Diocese awards scholarships to promising youth who are headed to college. The Diocese seeks students who are active in their local parishes and have assumed leadership roles in their communities. To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens enrolled in four-year undergraduate programs. For information, contact Maria Barsoumian at (212) The Sixth Sunday of Great Lent is called the Sunday of Advent. This Sunday teaches us about the first Advent of Christ His Incarnation: His Holy Birth when God became Man. This proved the Truth found in the Scriptures that by the coming of the Savior, a second chance was given to mankind to be guided on the path leading towards salvation. This Sunday also symbolizes the Second Advent. In the Gospels and Apostolic Letters there are many references dedicated to the Second Advent, where our Lord warns us about His return. In the Gospel of St. Matthew, Christ says, Watch out and do not let anyone fool you. Many men, claiming to speak for me, will come and say, I am the Messiah! and they will fool many people. You are going to hear the noise of battles close by and the news of battles far away Countries will fight each other; kingdoms will attack one another. There will be famines and earthquakes everywhere And you will be hated by all nations for my Name s sake Many false prophets will appear and fool many people. Such will be the spread of evil that many people s love will grow cold. But whoever holds out to the end will be saved (Mt 24:4-13). The message of this Sunday is a call for endurance, piety and modesty. Through these we can patiently wait for the Glorious Resurrection of Christ, the purification of our souls and the triumph of the True Faith. All Christian Churches celebrate the feast of the Sunday of Advent.
6 Save the Tomb From medieval times down to the present day, the Armenian Church has been blessed to share joint custodial oversight of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre: the site of Jesus Christ s tomb. Today, our Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem is deeply involved in the historic restoration of the Holy Sepulchre. As a major jurisdiction of the worldwide Armenian Church, the Eastern Diocese aims to raise $300,000 to contribute to this effort. You can play a role in preserving and protecting this treasure of our Christian heritage. Contributions can be made online at the website (through the secure server of the Diocesan website), or via checks made out to the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, Memo: Save the Tomb Fund.
7 Weekly Wisdom Your spirit is more powerful than your flesh. 1 John 4:4 says, The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. The Holy Spirit, who lives in you if you are born again, is greater than anything in the world, including your flesh. Therefore, you do not have to be controlled by your flesh and worldly lusts. In Luke 10:19, Jesus says, "I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you." This verse doesn't mean that things won't come against us, but it does mean that even when hard things come against us, God has given us the power to remain peaceful and joyful even in the midst of the difficult circumstances. Remember that God "is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us" (Ephesians 3:20). The power God has given us is amazing; however, many Christians never activate that power in their own lives because they don't really believe that God will personally work in them. Remember that Jesus said, "it shall be done for you as you have believed" (Matthew 8:13). Therefore, dare to believe that God has given you the power to do awesome things for Him--things that you can only do because your spirit is more powerful than your flesh.
