3 NOVEMBER 12, 2017 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3 A beautiful picture was captured this past Sunday evening here at Saints Peter and Paul as we reflected on the candles lit in remembrance of our deceased loved ones. With the Corporal works of Mercy in mind, now would be a good time to assess our spiritual progress. Have we made a difference? If God were totally our faith in action would He be pleased with what we do or have done? Evils plague our society, such as abortion, pornography, comprehensive sex education in our schools and other anti-god, anti-life and anti-family issues. As Christians, we know that we are commanded to be active in serving God. Service is an action word so we know that we cannot serve God by sitting on the sidelines. Are we, as Catholics, influencing our World, or is today s relativism and secularism influencing us much more? Are we setting an example for the next generation to protect marriage and to defend life? Do we speak up when in a position to defend our moral and ethical Catholic values? Do we hold our elected officials accountable? Obviously you (we) cannot do it all, but we can certainly do something. We have all been given Free Will Let us use it to build a better world. Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn t do it, sins. 7 NOVEMBER 12, 2017 THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 7 Pastor s Greeting- MATTHEW 25 In the Gospel according to Matthew, as Jesus teaches in Jerusalem during the last week of his life, he advises his disciples to stay faithful and to be prepared as they await the return of their Master. In chapter 24, he makes it clear that the day and the hour is known only to the Father. Chapter 25 concludes Jesus Jerusalem teaching roughly two days before Passover and his crucifixion. There are three parabolic scenes in chapter 25 which tell of the arrival of the Bridegroom, of the Master, and of the King the Son of Man. Each speaks of human responsibilities with regard to these arrivals, matters for which all of us will be held to account before God. The strangest or most peculiar of the three, in my mind, leads off. Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to ten virgins awaiting at night the arrival of the Bridegroom. Upon his arrival, they would greet him with their lighted olive oil lamps, and proceed into the wedding feast In order to understand the figures in this first scene, I go to 2 Corinthians Saint Paul writes to the Church in Corinth: For I am jealous of you with the jealousy of God, since I betrothed you to one husband to present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. The whole Church in Corinth is called a chaste virgin betrothed to Christ. I suggest that this is the nuptial imagery behind the parable. It was Jesus, of course, who began speaking of himself as the Bridegroom and of the feast of the Kingdom as a wedding feast. This comes from the prophetic context of Israel s covenant with God considered to be a marriage covenant. While never considered to be a sexual relationship, God s marriage with his People was to be an intimate sharing of God s life in fullness. The virgin in the betrothal imagery is completely free of idolatry/adultery, but is rather completely faithful to God. The virgins are a collective of the intended Bride, namely the Church. Here is where Christian men and women alike are parabolically signified by the ten virgins. Surely, you have noticed by now, and I hope find it quite striking that at Baptisms, each of the newly baptized or their parents/godparents are handed a candle lit from the Easter Candle with the ritual words: Receive the Light of Christ. The instruction continues: Learn how to keep the flame of faith alive in your hearts, so that when the Lord comes, you may go out to meet him (bearing his light) so as to enter his Kingdom. It is left to the faithful imagination how to consider the fuel for the light of faith, but the gifts of the Holy Spirit, faith, hope, and love, all come to mind. In the parable of the ten virgins, all ten of them fall asleep for they have a long wait into the night. Five of the virgins, however, are wise in that they have planned for a wait of unknown duration and have brought extra olive oil for their lamps. I have several of these, one a replica of a first century Jerusalem lamp. Its flame must be carefully guarded. Its oil is consumed at a steady rate. The wick can last for days, but it needs trimming every few hours and occasional replacement. A serious member of the Betrothed would take all necessary precautions. It would the height of foolishness not to be prepared. But five of the ten are foolish indeed. They fail in their purpose, they fail in their betrothal, they fail to meet the Bridegroom, and they fail to enter the wedding feast, since their foolishness makes them unknown (and unknowable) to the Bridegroom. To know is also a nuptial term. Jesus parable is a word to the wise. Its admonition, Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour is not meant to prohibit a Christian from sleeping, but from sleeping at the switch. Nor is Jesus revealing that only 50% will in fact be saved, rather he stresses our responsibilities in the outcome (as is the case with all three scenarios of this chapter). SEMPER PARATUS is the word. Don t let the Bridegroom and the wedding feast pass you by, especially since you are a member of the Bride. A word to the wise is sufficient. Fr. Richard Upcoming Holy Days and Mass Schedules: As you begin planning your family s celebrations for Thanksgiving and Christmas, we wanted to provide you the upcoming schedules for Masses here at Saints Peter and Paul.
