Conflict, miscommunication, unexpected challenges in life and wounds from the past are part of every marriage. How can we turn sources of division into opportunities for love and grace? How do we show real love when real challenges hit our marriages from every side? Retrouvaille may be just for you. Retrouvaille (pronounced retro-vi) has helped thousands of couples who are disillusioned or even experiencing misery in their marriage. This program can help you too. For confidential information about or to register for the January program beginning with a weekend on January 29, 2016, call ext 346 or satkv59@gmail.com or visit the website at A Quote from Pope Francis Situations can change; people can change. Be the first to seek to bring good. Do not grow accustomed to evil, but defeat it with good. Pilgrimage: Fr. Frank Ruff, from our neighboring parishes of Guthrie and Elton, is planning to host a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, September 27 October 7, He promises it will be a Journey of a Lifetime and that the Bible and Jesus will come alive for you. If interested, contact him: fruff@glenmary.org Three wise men following the star to find Jesus: They were on a journey of faith very much like us. We follow the light of Jesus that is within us. We follow the light that we see in creation and other people. We see the light everywhere yet, we keep going on our quest. Our journey will lead us where we will see Jesus completely. There will be darkness on the journey at times and we might find it hard to see. That is when the light within will guide us. That is when we will also find the light in others. We keep going, pressing on to meet Jesus face to face. Then finally, at the end of our journey, we give Jesus an empty heart. Every bit of love has been given away. Any gifts he gave us also are empty; they have been used to share his love. Even our body will no longer be needed. We will have given all life to him. The gift we have left is our soul. Our final gift to Jesus will be where our soul has been yearning. We will see Jesus and finally be home. Jubilee Year of Mercy began Dec. 8th How can we show others the mercy of God? We say that God is compassionate, but we ignore the poor. We say that God loves us and has mercy on us, but we hold grudges against our friends. Our actions need to authentically reflect God's mercy. Visit to explore the different ways that you can live out that mercy every day!

3 PARISH NEWS Rite of Acceptance/Rite of Welcome: This weekend we celebrate the Rite of Acceptance/Rite of Welcome with those who have joined us at RCIA as they have gathered to learn, to ask questions, to search their hearts for God s direction. This rite is of great importance because it symbolizes a stage of growth in their journey of faith. As God called Sarah and Abraham, Moses and Miriam, and liberated the Israelites from Egypt, so too God continues to call each one of us into deeper faith and conversion, to live according to the gospel, and to embrace the way of the cross. The Rite of Acceptance/Rite of Welcome attempts to point to this ongoing experience of conversion and is an invitation for all of us to be consciously growing in faith. The Rite of Acceptance to the Order of Catechumens is for those who wish to be initiated into the Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharistic and Confirmation. The Rite of Welcome is for those who wish to complete their Christian initiation through the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Parish Office Closed: Our parish office will be closed on Monday, January 18 th as we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. If you have a pastoral emergency, please call the parish office and follow the emergency prompts. The office will re-open on Tuesday, January 19 th at 8:00 a.m. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration: All are invited to two important celebrations in conjunction with Martin Luther King Jr. s birthday as we remember this civil rights leader who advocated change through nonviolent means. On Sunday, January 17 th there will be a celebration at 2:30 p.m. at Freeman Chapel C.M.E. (Christian Methodist Episcopal) located at 137 South Virginia Street that will include music, scripture and a message. On Monday, January 18 th at 10:00 a.m. in the City of Hopkinsville there will be a March here in Hopkinsville that begins at the Boys and Girls Club located at 1600 Walnut Street and continues to Mount Olive Baptist Church. We encourage you and your family to join in these celebrations. Thank You Cards: We received two Thank You cards this week. They read as follows: Although I m very delayed in expressing Tony and my thanks for the Angel Tree gift of a fruit basket and candy, the picture on this card depicts how we feel about the warmth of parishioners at Saints Peter and Paul Church. Like Mama Bear, they ve wrapped their arms around us and given us much comfort and help during this period of Tony s illness. The beauty of a church community is that it extends far beyond the confines of a building into the very hearts of those who not only need physical help, but those who need to share their thanks, their love, and spiritual joy with the one another. Our deepest thanks and appreciation to the Angel who brought Christmas joy into our household!. Love, Tony and Marlene Castro JANUARY 17, Dear Sts Peter and Paul Parish Friends: Ken and I want to say Thank You to all of you for helping us recover from our June of 2014 car accident. It has been such a comfort to have your prayers and visits, your much needed words of encouragement, and the scrumptious food donations! All of these helped us so much to get back on our feet literally!. What a privilege it is to be a part of such a caring Parish! May Our Lord Bless You All! Ken and Jan Buckner (As a parish we give thanks to God in how far they have come since their accident. What a blessing they are.) Thank You: We are very grateful for those who came to help us un-decorate the church as we move from the Season of Christmas to Ordinary Time. We give thanks to Bette Covington, Mary Graben, Judy Pound, Joe Ritzheimer, Bill Rush, Marty Schroeder, Ann Williams, Allen McGee, Steve Kinnard and Libby. It is amazing how quick this transformation took just a little over an hour. Thank you so much. Family Movie Night: On Sunday, January 17 th at 5:00 p.m. we will gather in the gym at 5:00 p.m. Bring a pot of chili, hotdogs and the works as we will begin with dinner and continue with the Movie. Popcorn and lemonade will be provided. We will be showing War Room. War Room is from the creators of Fireproof and Courageous (both of which we have shown) and is a compelling faith drama filled with humor and heart that became the #1 movie in US theaters and received raving reviews from audiences of all ages. The movie centers around Tony and Elizabeth Jordan who appear to have it all great jobs, a beautiful daughter, and their dream house, but appearances can be deceiving. So come and join us as we as parish families gather to see this powerful movie that will make you think. Remember there is no school on Monday, as we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Ultreya: There will be an Ultreya gathering this Sunday, January 17 th. Our witness speaker will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the Office Annex. Leaders School will begin at 3:00 p.m. following Ultreya. For more information, call Mary Lee at (270) Anniversary of The Supreme Court s Decision to legalize abortion is Friday, January 22 nd (43rd Anniversary). Our Choose Life PARISH NEWS belief is that life begins at conception and can only be ended by natural death. We live in a disposable society which has influenced a culture of death, which enshrines abortion-on-demand in laws, celebrates it as a right, and resorts to it with an alarming frequency. However, this is being changed by education, legislation, political action, and prayer. Be kind, Be persistent, Be praying, Be compassionate. Be forgiving. You are encouraged along with all the Dioceses of the United States to make Friday, January 22 nd a DAY of FASTING and PRAYER (Continued on page 4)

4 4 SS PETER & PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, HOPKINSVILLE, KY PARISH NEWS for the unborn, for women with unplanned and unwanted pregnancies, for men who have facilitated abortions, and for the sanctity of human life, especially in the womb. Remember our church is open to allow the faithful to pray for an end to abortion. At 12:00 - Noon we will gather for an Ecumenical Prayer Service as we recall the 43 rd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade. All are strongly encouraged to attend. We must do our part to protect the dignity of the human person and ensure the inalienable right to life for all especially the unborn. On this anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe vs. Wade (1973), we are reminded that God recognized each of us before we were born, and called us by name, so too may we recognize the value of each human life and pledge ourselves to continue to defend and nurture God s greatest gift to us. Keep in Prayer: Let us keep in prayer this week those who are traveling to Washington, D.C. for the 43 rd Annual March for Life scheduled for Friday, January 22 nd. Diocesan Prolife Mass: All are invited to the annual Diocesan Prolife Mass. This year the Mass for Life will be celebrated by Bishop Medley on Friday, January 22 nd at 12:05 p.m. at Saint Stephen Cathedral in Owensboro. This is the 43rd anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court s Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion in our country throughout all 9 months of pregnancy, and since that time over 53 million children have lost their lives. Please come and express your belief in the sanctity of life at all stages and pray for the conversion of our nation to value all human life. Prayer of Reparation God and Father of Life, You have created every human person, and have opened the way for each to have eternal life. We live in the shadow of death. Tens of millions of your children have been killed because of the Roe vs. Wade decision legalizing abortion. Father, have mercy on us. Heal our land and accept our offering of prayer and penance. In your love for us, turn back the scourge of abortion. May each of us exult in hearts full of hope and hands full of mercy and work together to build a culture of life. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen. PARISH NEWS Fifth Sunday Sing: The Christian County Ministerial Association is sponsoring Remembering the Dream 5 th Sunday Sing on Sunday, January 31 st at 4:00 p.m. with the host church being First Presbyterian Church located at 303 E. 9 th Street here in Hopkinsville. This Sing will include music from several area churches and will involve the reading parts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. s speeches. A reception will follow at the church. All are invited to gather as a community of believers. Anointing of the Sick: Pope John Paul II designed February 11 th as World Day of the Sick, a special time of prayers and sharing, of offering one s suffering for the good of the Church and of reminding us to see in our sick brothers and sisters the face of Christ who, by suffering, dying, and rising, achieve the salvation of humankind. Because of this, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick at all Masses the weekend of January 30 th and 31 st (a weekend that Fr. Julio is at Saints Peter and Paul rather than at St. Mary and James in Guthrie). The prayers, antiphons, and texts focus on the mercy and forgiveness of God. So, pray with these prayers and scripture readings and ask God to bring you healing both, mind and spirit. Consider inviting an elderly person to Mass with you on this weekend so they can receive this Sacrament of healing as well! Candlemas Day Presentation of the Lord As a Church we celebrate the Presentation of the Lord on Tuesday, February 2 nd. The Scripture Readings tell us the story of Jesus being presented in the temple by Mary and Joseph and the proclamation of Simeon and Anna. Come and join us at the 8:00 a.m. Mass along with the whole school. We will have a blessing of candles as well as a procession with candles into the church. You are invited to bring candles from home to be blessed. If you would like to purchase candles, the cost is $3.00 for a box of 2 candles. These candles will then be taken home for use in your homes. Blessing of Throats Memorial of St. Blaise, Wednesday, February 3 rd. We will be offering Blessing of the Throat to our school children on Tuesday, February 2 nd at the end of the 8:00 a.m. Mass. We will also be offering this blessing at the conclusion of all weekend Masses (January 30 th and 31 st ). World Marriage Day February 7 th : World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as head of the family; the basic unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life. The idea of celebrating marriage began in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in The event was so successful, the idea spread to other communities. By 1982, 43 governors officially proclaimed the day and celebrations spread to U. S. Military bases in several foreign countries. In 1983, the name was changed to "World Marriage Day". World Marriage Day celebrations continue to grow and spread to more countries and faith expressions every year. As a church, we at Saints Peter and Paul will (Continued on page 5)

7 JANUARY 17, 2016 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Pastor s Greetings: From the perspective of my service in the Church as that of a groomsman for Christ in his one flesh covenant of the Eucharist and in support of the one flesh covenant of the Sacrament of Matrimony, I find it helpful to pray like this to Christ: I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health; to love you and to honor you all the days of my life. Of course, this is taken from the Catholic marriage promise vowed by husbands and wives. In any case it is a promise which can only be kept by any of us through the help and the grace of God. A few Sundays ago I suggested that spouses, parents, and children might do well to offer this promise to each other regularly, adding so help me God. Whether spoken or not it is the intention which Christian marriage and family need to survive and to thrive. I also mentioned the promises which I made as a deacon in 1977 and the additional ones I made as a priest in 1978, promises which are made for life. Here is a listing of the promises which are made in the Sacrament of Holy Orders (Diaconate, Presbyterate, Episcopate). Those to be ordained solemnly affirm these promises prior to their being ordained. I present the respective promises here according to the particular rank within the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The Order of Deacon At ordination the transitional deacon (an unmarried man to be called later to the presbyteral order) resolves: To be consecrated for the Church s ministry by the laying on of (the bishop s) hands and the gift of the Holy Spirit; to discharge the office of deacon with humble charity in order to assist the priestly Order and to benefit the Christian people; to hold fast to the mystery of faith with a clear conscience, as the Apostle urges, and to proclaim this faith in word and deed according to the Gospel and the Church s tradition; to embrace and to keep forever the commitment to the celibate state as a sign of his dedication to Christ the Lord for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven, in the service of God and Man; to maintain and deepen the spirit of prayer that is proper to his way of life and, in keeping with this spirit and what is required of him, to celebrate faithfully the Liturgy of the Hours with and for the People of God and indeed for the whole world; and to conform his way of life always to the example of Christ, of whose Body and Blood he is minister at the altar; AND he promises respect and obedience to his Ordinary and his successors. The Order of Presbyter (Priest) At ordination the presbyter resolves: With the help of the Holy Spirit, to discharge without fail the office of priesthood in the presbyteral rank, as a worthy fellow worker with the Order of Bishops in caring for the Lord s flock; to exercise the ministry of the word worthily and wisely, preaching the Gospel and teaching the Catholic faith; to celebrate faithfully and reverently, in accord with the Church s tradition, the mysteries of Christ, especially the sacrifice of the Eucharist and the sacrament of Reconciliation, for the glory of God and the sanctification of the Christian people; to implore (with the Order of Bishops) God s mercy upon the people entrusted to his care by observing the command to pray without ceasing; to be united more closely every day to Christ the High Priest, who offered himself for us to the Father as a pure sacrifice, and with Christ to consecrate himself to God for the salvation of all; AND he promises respect and obedience to his Ordinary and his successors. The Order of Episcopacy (Bishop) At ordination the bishop resolves: By the grace of the Holy Spirit to discharge until death the office entrusted to the Order of Bishops by the Apostles, which was passed on to him by the laying on of hands; to preach the Gospel of Christ with constancy and fidelity; to guard the deposit of faith, entire and incorrupt, as handed down by the Apostles preserved in the Church everywhere and at all times; to build up the body of Christ, his Church, and to remain in the unity of that body together with the Order of Bishops under the authority of the successor of Saint Peter the Apostle; to render obedience faithfully to the successor of the blessed Apostle Peter; to guide the holy people of God in the way of salvation as a devoted father and sustain them with the help of his fellow ministers, the priests and deacons; for the sake of the Lord s name, to be welcoming and merciful to the poor, to strangers, and to all who are in need; as a good shepherd to seek out the sheep who stray and gather them into the Lord s fold; and to pray without ceasing to almighty God for the holy people and to carry out the office of high priest without reproach. Fidelity to the promises I have made to Christ in the Church is a daily challenge and a daily gift. How far I am from completing or fulfilling the promises only the Lord knows for sure. Facing my personal failures and limitations I must ask your pardon and the Lord s mercy. It is by that mercy alone that I can strive to pursue these promises with good hope. For you and for me, Christ has made promises to us. It is his promise and fidelity which gives the foundation to all the covenant promises we make. He supplies the fruitfulness of our promises and the grace that you and I may be faithful. He has espoused himself to us forever. Fr.
