We respond to the Lord s call by becoming disciples. More than simply tagging along in the crowd, discipleship involves a commitment to abide with Jesus, a surrender to the transforming power of His love. Wherever you may be on the journey, the following reflection on discipleship hopes to inspire a person to a closer walk with the Lord. Works of Mercy: Giving drink to the thirsty Of the corporal works of mercy, giving drink to the thirsty is perhaps the most immediate associated with sustaining life. We can go hungry and survive without food for some time, but we cannot live long without taking in fluids. Water remains a pressing need for many in impoverished areas around the world. We can help by donating to charities that provide potable water literally a lifesaving endeavor. Because water is necessary for physical life, there is rich symbolism in the waters of Baptism, where we are regenerated into the supernatural life of grace. This life of grace impels us to love our neighbor. Last week s Gospel gave us a warning about what happened to those who fail to help a neighbor in need. The rich man in the parable turned a blind eye to Lazarus, the poor man on his doorstep, and now pays the eternal consequence for his neglect. At the root of the rich man s sin is a failure to see Lazarus human dignity. As a result, he devalued Lazarus life. This pattern of dehumanization repeats throughout history, to our own time. By performing works of mercy for today s Lazarus, whether near or far, we witness to the intrinsic value of each human life. St. John Paul II expounds upon this truth in Evangelium Vitae ( Gospel of Life ): Why is life a good? This question is found everywhere in the Bible, and from the very first pages it receives a powerful and amazing answer. The human person is a manifestation of God in the world, a sign of His presence, a trace of His glory Man has been given a sublime dignity in man there shines forth a reflection of God Himself (34). The task of accepting and serving life involves everyone; and this task must be fulfilled above all toward life when it is at its weakest. It is Christ Himself Who reminds us of this when He asks to be loved and served in His brothers and sisters who are suffering in any way: the hungry, the thirsty, the foreigner, the naked, the sick, the imprisoned Whatever is done to each of them is done to Christ Himself (43).

3 OCTOBER 2, Pastor s Greetings: AMORIS LAETITIA CH. EIGHT: ACCOMPANYING, DISCERNING AND INTEGRATING WEAKNESS (CONTINUED) The weaknesses and mitigating circumstances of which Pope Francis speaks should be differentiated from the hardness of heart of which Jesus speaks to the Pharisees. The differentiating and discerning factor is that of desired conversion and the desire to draw closer to Christ and the transforming power of God s mercy. For this discernment to happen, the following conditions must necessarily be present: humility, discretion and love for the Church and her teaching, in a sincere search for God's will and a desire to make a more perfect response to it" [300]. Persons with this transforming hope will experience welcome in the church, a journey toward integration or communion. That is not to say that such a journey would be painless or smooth, but that God will make a way of grace for the church to accompany them on their quest. The pastoral discernment for navigating the paths of redemption, like the path toward the ecumenical unity of the divided churches and ecclesial communities, is rarely clear or straightforward at the outset. The Pope rightly recognizes that many times people progress by gradual stages toward full sacramental communion [see 295]. In every case these will be pilgrimages of authentic faith, determined hope, and committed love. Pope Francis both recognizes but also seriously underestimates the fragile nature of a pastor s discretionary power to resolve the irregular situations of couples married outside the Church. Consider this reflection continuing from the quote of #300 cited above. Given the positive attitude of the couple, the Pope says: These attitudes are essential for avoiding the grave danger of misunderstandings, such as the notion that any priest can quickly grant "exceptions", or that some people can obtain sacramental privileges in exchange for favours. When a responsible and tactful person, who does not presume to put his or her own desires ahead of the common good of the Church, meets with a pastor capable of acknowledging the seriousness of the matter before him, there can be no risk that a specific discernment may lead people to think that the Church maintains a double standard (emphasis added) [300]. With deep respect for Pope Francis, I cannot help but disagree, for given the Church s experience of so-called internal forum resolutions of irregular unions and, subsequently, with various spouses returning to Holy Communion, there frequently have been grave misunderstandings, even scandal, with people thinking that the Church does maintain a double standard. Attitudes which stubbornly dissent from Catholic doctrine while insisting on practices the Church teaches to be sinful may well hold some people on the opposite side of the starting line of the journey to communion. Naturally, if someone flaunts an objective sin as if it were part of the Christian ideal, or wants to impose something other than what the Church teaches, he or she can in no way presume to teach or preach to others; this is a case of something which separates from the community (cf. Mt 18:17). Such a person needs to listen once more to the Gospel message and its call to conversion. Yet even for that person there can be some way of taking part in the life of community, whether in social service, prayer meetings or another way that his or her own initiative, together with the discernment of the parish priest, may suggest [297]. Accompaniment which the Pope desires as an essential of the Gospel would mean that pastors and faithful invitingly wait and pray for the conversion in their hearts which would prepare the way of the Gospel. Integration or communion is impossible in the case in which Christ s truth witnessed by the Catholic and Apostolic faith is denied by word or deed. The waiting charity and prayer of the Church chooses to trust and hope in God s grace for those not ready to begin the journey of conversion in the company of the disciples. Pope Francis goes back and forth between asserting adherence to Catholic doctrine while at the same time having profound compassion for the broken circumstances of God s scattered and conflicted children. Paragraphs offer a perfect example of this oscillation of concern, and the exhortation urges that both poles be held simultaneously with integrity and passion. I believe that this dialectical tension in unity, along with the Pope s concern for the magnitude of variables in people s circumstances, account for most of the unavoidable ambiguity in his exhortation. In order to avoid all misunderstanding, I would point out that in no way must the Church desist from proposing the full ideal of marriage, God's plan in all its grandeur: "Young people who are baptized should be encouraged to understand that the sacrament of marriage can enrich their prospects of love and that they can be sustained by the grace of Christ in the sacrament and by the possibility of participating fully in the life of the Church". A lukewarm attitude, any kind of relativism, or an undue reticence in proposing that ideal, would be a lack of fidelity to the Gospel and also of love on the part of the Church for young people themselves. To show understanding in the face of exceptional situations never implies dimming the light of the fuller ideal, or proposing less than what Jesus offers to the human being. Today, more important than the pastoral care of failures is the pastoral effort to strengthen marriages and thus to prevent their breakdown [307]. At the same time, from our awareness of the weight of mitigating circumstances psychological, historical and even biological it follows that "without detracting from the evangelical ideal, there is a need to accompany with mercy and patience the eventual stages of personal growth as these (Continued on page 4)

4 4 (Continued from page 3) SS PETER & PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, HOPKINSVILLE, KY progressively appear", making room for "the Lord's mercy, which spurs us on to do our best". I understand those who prefer a more rigorous pastoral care which leaves no room for confusion. But I sincerely believe that Jesus wants a Church attentive to the goodness which the Holy Spirit sows in the midst of human weakness, a Mother who, while clearly expressing her objective teaching, "always does what good she can, even if in the process, her shoes get soiled by the mud of the street". The Church's pastors, in proposing to the faithful the full ideal of the Gospel and the Church's teaching, must also help them to treat the weak with compassion, avoiding aggravation or unduly harsh or hasty judgements. The Gospel itself tells us not to judge or condemn (cf. Mt 7:1; Lk 6:37). Jesus "expects us to stop looking for those personal or communal niches which shelter us from the maelstrom of human misfortune, and instead to enter into the reality of other people's lives and to know the power of tenderness. Whenever we do so, our lives become wonderfully complicated"[308]. Pope Francis asserted very simply in his introduction that everyone should feel challenged by chapter eight, surely an understatement. It is a challenge to read and to understand due to its style, but even more so because of the reaching out, the Pope s demand that the Church in its pastors and in all the Faithful while standing true to the faith also offer a hand of hope for communion to the disaffected who nonetheless seek us in Christ. He wants us to offer an inviting word even to those who do not seek Christ with us, a word of Gospel hope through a shared conversion to Christ. He concludes chapter eight with these words. I encourage the faithful who find themselves in complicated situations to speak confidently with their pastors or with other lay people whose lives are committed to the Lord. They may not always encounter in them a confirmation of their own ideas or desires, but they will surely receive some light to help them better understand their situation and discover a path to personal growth. I also encourage the Church's pastors to listen to them with sensitivity and serenity, with a sincere desire to understand their plight and their point of view, in order to help them live better lives and to recognize their proper place in the Church [312]. My hope is that this reflection will assist you in your own reading of this deliberately challenging portion of Pope Francis apostolic exhortation. Fr. Richard Start by doing what s necessary; then do what s possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible. We now will be performing the necessary paperwork to submit the application to the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus in order to receive matching funds that are required for the purchase. This will take about 4 weeks to process and then Alpha Alternative will be able to place a purchase order to the supplier of the ultrasound. Lead time is identified at about 3 to 4 weeks. We can be proud of "Putting A Heart in the Mobile Alpha Alternative RV". It will be functional by mid to late November and we can "Start to Save Lives of the Unborn". Thank you Dick Dymek, Knights of Columbus If we really want to love others, we must first begin to love one another in our own home. Love begins at home, and so from here from our own home love will spread to my neighbor, in the street I live, in the town I live, in the whole world. Nakedness is not only for a piece of cloth. Nakedness is for human dignity, for respect. Homelessness is not only for a home made of bricks. Homelessness is being rejected, unwanted, unloved, uncared for, having forgotten what is human love, what is human touch. Mother Teresa 5

From September 28 through November 6, you re invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. October, the Month of the Rosary: The rosary dates from the twelfth century, when it provided a way for ordinary Christians to learn about the lives of Jesus and Mary. Unable to read the 150 psalms that formed the Church s official daily prayer, medieval Christians substituted 150 Ave Marias. By meditating on the various mysteries of the rosary while repeating these simple prayers, the faithful could immerse themselves in the whole mystery of the Incarnation and the Resurrection. In the picture you will see several members of our Rosary Makers (Harriett Hancock, Carolyn Brown, Beverly Todd and Deana Holdman) organizing their supplies as they begin preparing 2,000 rosaries for the missions who continually are in need of them. Pivotal Players: Several years ago, Fr. Robert Barron and Word on Fire came out with Catholicism which is a wonderful DVD series that used cinematography from around the world to bring to life our Catholic faith. This September, Bishop Robert Barron and Word on Fire released Catholicism The Pivotal Players Volume 1. The Pivotal Players showcases a handful of saints, artists, mystics and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of western civilization. Those included are: St. Francis of Assisi, the Reformer, radically and literally lived as Jesus commanded to transform the Church. St. Thomas Aquinas, the Theologian, demonstrated that faith and reason are not at odds, as they come from the same source. St. Catherine of Siena, the Mystic, gave testimony to the reality of the spiritual dimension here and beyond. Blessed John Henry Newman, the Convert, left a prestigious career to seek and preach the apostolic faith. G. K. Chesterton, the Evangelist, publicly, humbly, and humorously announced the paradoxes and truth of Christianity. Michaelangelo, the Artist, dramatically demonstrated that beauty and creativity are a primary route of access to God. Question: Would you and your Arise Group, want to Journey with Bishop Barron to explore the lasting influence of these Pivotal Players? See Libby for more information.
