Rita was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Smithton, Illinois where she was an active member of the church quilters and the funeral lunch committee. Office Help Needed: Libby is in need of help in her office on Friday, March 23 rd. If you can assist for an hour or so, please see Libby for more information. Palm Sunday: Next Sunday we will celebrate Palm Sunday, also called The Passion of the Lord. We invite all to wear red and gather with us (weather permitting) up near the school as we celebrate Christ entrance into Jerusalem. We will bless palm and then walk in procession into the church as we will hear the Passion of Our Lord according to St. Mark. Covering of Statues: The practice of veiling crosses and statues during the last two weeks of Lent was approved by the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) in November 2001, granted recognition by the Holy See, and has been in effect since April This practice is a way to extend the Lenten fast. Veiling statues and images is a visual fast which helps us to focus all our attention on Christ as we approach the celebration of his Passion. We clear away any distractions so that we might focus on him who calls us through the cross to new life. The Season of Lent is a time to recognize what we are really hungering for. It is a time to take inventory of our lives and to ask ourselves how we are doing in our quest for the ultimate prize in life. In other words, do we understand that what the human soul is crying out for is the fullness of life that Jesus came into the world to bring us. Our hearts were made for you O Lord, and they will not rest until they rest in you. St. Augustine

7 MARCH 18, 2018 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT 7 Pastor s Greetings: LAZARUS A rich young man once turned away from the following of Jesus because Jesus had asked that he sell all his things, give the money to the poor, and then become a disciple. He chose to keep his things. This prompted Jesus to say that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. Given the shocked reaction of his disciples to this announcement, Jesus explained that entry into the Kingdom was impossible by human efforts. It was only made possible by God. For that very purpose of revealing the way made possible by God, Jesus was making his way to Jerusalem. Whatever Jesus asked of others he first did himself. In his prayer, speech, and actions Jesus lived as a child, the trusting Son of the Father in Heaven. He embodied the beatitudes he taught. Only because he himself was threading the eye of the needle as he went to Jerusalem and the Cross did Jesus invite anyone else to follow him and bear the cross. At the Last Supper Jesus said, As I have done, so you must do. Do this in memory of me. While Jesus had long ago divested himself of whatever property he had through Joseph in Nazareth, he still carried that which all humans cling to as most precious. He bore his own human life down to Jerusalem to surrender it for us to the Father. Even this, the cherishing of one s own life, is wealth too great to pass through the needle s eye. This treasure and the treasured lives of all those one loves must be entrusted to the Father s hands at the gate of heaven to gain admittance. In fact, the surrendering of loved lives is even required along the way to the Kingdom. One advances toward the Abba of Jesus Christ only as a surrendering child. This is even the secret of loving one s neighbor as one s self, that is, having placed my self in God s hands, I esteem the other as placed there too. Jesus wept at the death of Lazarus in union with the sorrow of his friends, not because of loss. He sincerely wept, but he did not resent his friend s being taken by God as an injustice and woe. He summoned Lazarus back from death, not to counter the action of the Father, but to show to one and all that what goes to the Father is safe in the Father s hands. The Father and the Son are of one accord in all that they do. By revealing the absolute grounds for trusting God in summoning Lazarus back from the tomb, Jesus glorified his Father. To underscore this absolute trust, to glorify the Father to the fullest extent, he himself endured agony, shame, and a miserable death. His trusting obedience unto death glorified the Father. The Father then glorified the Son in raising him from death for our salvation. Jesus said, I am the Resurrection and the Life. He is also the Crucified, God s gift for our dying, our surrender of our own and all the lives we treasure to the Father. If we accept that each life belongs to God, is from God, and is directed to God by the grace of Jesus Christ, then it is from God that we will receive the same life fulfilled in the Kingdom of God s eternal glory. Jesus is then for those who follow him the way that threads the eye of the needle. Even more, Jesus actually shares his death with us as his power within us to die to sin; to die to disordered desire; to die in breaking the slavery of an addiction. There are many times when, before you or I can truly say to God, Your will be done, not mine, we must first pray even to desire God s will over our own. Often before we can assent to the teaching of the Church, we have to begin by praying to want to be able to assent to the truth which the Church teaches, finding that of ourselves want our own truth instead of what God has revealed and the Church teaches to be true. To assent to the truth of God, who is Jesus Christ, you and I must die to our falsehoods of self-will. The power of Christ s dying, the power of his love is the only power which can free us either to desire or to affirm the will of God in us over our various captivities. Only by union with his dying can we rise to newness of life. I conclude by using the words of Saint Paul to the Philippians : Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found in human appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Amen. Fr. Richard - Holy Week and Triduum Worship Schedule Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion March 24/25, 2018 Regular Weekend schedule with Palm Procession.
