Registration is required. Marriage: Contact the Office six months prior to the desired date. A Closer Walk: Jesus invites each one of us to a deep personal relationship with Him. We respond to the Lord s call by becoming disciples. More than simply tagging along in the crowd, discipleship involves a commitment to abide with Jesus, a surrender to the transforming power of His love. Wherever you may be on the journey, the following reflection on discipleship hopes to inspire a person to a closer walk with the Lord. Works of Mercy: Admonishing the sinner In last week s Gospel, we heard the parable of the rich fool, who thought his future was secure, as though he were master of his own destiny. But in truth, he was teetering on the edge of a spiritual precipice or abyss. Perhaps we know people who are treading a dangerous path. Whether caught up in serious sin, or just heedless of their need for God, they are living on a trajectory to trouble. We re not judging the state of their souls, but it can be clear that their actions are courting consequences. If we re in a position to express our concern, speak of the Lord s great love for them, and gently try to attract them to follow His will, we perform a spiritual work of mercy well attested in Scripture (e.g., Matthew 18:15-17, Galatians 6:1-2, James 5:19-20). The phrase admonish the sinner may sound harsh. But because the word admonish derives from the Latin to remind, suggest, warn, or urge, we can see that it is an act of love, not condemnation. After all, if we saw someone driving on the wrong side of the road, or about to touch a live power line, we d immediately warn of impending harm. The principle is the same for spiritual danger, although it requires tact, delicacy, and awareness of the right moment to discuss the matter privately. We also call it fraternal correction, reflecting the necessity of a kindly spirit toward our brother or sister in Christ. Mindful of our own weaknesses, we are never to criticize or find fault to tear the other person down, or to make ourselves feel superior. On the contrary, for this to be truly a work of spiritual mercy, our motive must arise from love for the other person. As St. Augustine said, God forbid that you should do it out of self-love, for then you would do nothing for him. If it is love that moves you, you do well. Before offering fraternal correction, let us pray for the person, and for guidance about how we may approach a conversation. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to prepare us for the right opportunity, and to inspire us with loving words that will touch the heart.

3 Construction Site Religious metals: As you know site work has begun on our new Saints Peter and Paul School and Parish Facility and it is exciting for what is yet to come. We need your help though as changes and improvements begin in the weeks and months ahead. We must realize this is a work environment with heavy machinery and workers trying to meet deadlines; therefore, we ask you to please refrain from visiting the work site and stopping workers to ask questions. Our goal is that construction is completed by July 1, 2017 and for this to happen they need to stay focused on the work at hand. At this time, our job is to pray for the workers safety, for our continued Catholic impact on our community and for the children who will be educated in this school long after some of us are gone. Another thing we ask of you, as we did the church, we want our school to stand on those saints who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith, so if you have religious medals, broken rosaries that cannot be repaired, bring them to us in the parish office and we will place them in the foundation of this school and parish facility. Know, we understand your excitement and interest as well and we will keep you posted of future developments and pictures, so keep watching the bulletin. Parish Office Hours: With school returning to Saints Peter and Paul on Wednesday, August 10 th, our parish office hours will return to the usual hours on Monday, August 8 th. 4 4 SS PETER & PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, HOPKINSVILLE, KY Interested in Becoming Catholic? Want to Learn More? All of us are on a spiritual journey; all are at different mileposts on that journey. Since the very earliest days of the Catholic Church, there has been a process of accepting men, women, children, and entire families into the Church. This process, which we today call the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), follows the mission commanded by Jesus Christ: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28) The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the way people are initiated into the Christian way of life, specifically in the Roman Catholic tradition. It is a journey of discovery, where participants come to know Jesus Christ. It is a process of awakening to what it means to be a Catholic Christian. It is an opportunity to explore the Catholic faith. It is a period of discernment to help each individual freely decide if the Catholic Church can be the place to call home. The RCIA is a focused experience of the everdeepening journey into the life of faith, which is the task of a lifetime. RCIA is for adults who have never been baptized, those who have been baptized in another Christian denomination, and even those baptized as a Catholic who were unable to continuing learning about the faith. For her, the Resurrection of the dead has taken place already. Did you know? The Solemnity of the Assumption, celebrated on August 15, falls on a Monday this year, and so is not a Holy Day of Obligation. When the obligation is abrogated, ritual Masses (i.e., marriage, confirmation) are still prohibited but funeral Masses may be celebrated. Marriage may be celebrated outside of Mass using texts from the Rite of Marriage. Come join us for Mass at 8:00 a.m. (in English) as we will gather with the school children and give honor to our Blessed Virgin Mary or join us at 8:00 p.m. as we celebrate Mass in Spanish. 5 (Continued on page 6)

7 AUGUST 7, 2016 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Pastor s Greetings: AMORIS LAETITIA CHAPTER SIX: SOME PASTORAL PERSPECTIVES PREPARING ENGAGED COUPLES FOR MARRIAGE In Pope Francis view marriage preparation should be a kind of initiation to the sacrament of matrimony [207]. Consider these excerpts. "The complexity of today's society and the challenges faced by the family require a greater effort on the part of the whole Christian community in preparing those who are about to be married. The importance of the virtues needs to be included. Among these, chastity proves invaluable for the genuine growth of love between persons. In this regard, the Synod Fathers agreed on the need to involve the entire community more extensively by stressing the witness of families themselves and by grounding marriage preparation in the process of Christian initiation by bringing out the connection between marriage, baptism and the other sacraments. The Fathers also spoke of the need for specific programs of marriage preparation aimed at giving couples a genuine experience of participation in ecclesial life and a complete introduction to various aspects of family life" [206]. With the help of missionary families (my emphasis a new idea?), the couple's own families and a variety of pastoral resources, ways should also be found to offer a remote preparation that, by example and good advice, can help their love to grow and mature.... Learning to love someone does not happen automatically, nor can it be taught in a workshop just prior to the celebration of marriage. For every couple, marriage preparation begins at birth. What they received from their family should prepare them to know themselves and to make a full and definitive commitment. Those best prepared for marriage are probably those who learned what Christian marriage is from their own parents, who chose each other unconditionally and daily renew this decision. In this sense, pastoral initiatives aimed at helping married couples to grow in love and in the Gospel of the family also help their children, by preparing them for their future married life [208]. Sadly, many couples marry without really knowing one another. They have enjoyed each other's company and done things together, but without facing the challenge of revealing themselves and coming to know who the other person truly is. [210] In their preparation for marriage, the couple should be encouraged to make the liturgical celebration a profound personal experience and to appreciate the meaning of each of its signs. In the case of two baptized persons, the commitment expressed by the words of consent and the bodily union that consummates the marriage can only be seen as signs of the covenantal love and union between the incarnate Son of God and his Church. In the baptized, words and signs become an eloquent language of faith. (This is the basis for Canon Law presuming the validity of every properly celebrated wedding ceremony and presuming sacramentality if between two baptized people. Fr.R.) The body, created with a Godgiven meaning, "becomes the language of the ministers of the sacrament, aware that in the conjugal pact there is expressed and realized the mystery that has its origin in God himself". [213] Continued next week. Fr Richard PARISH NEWS Congratulations: We welcome to our faith community two new members born of water and the Holy Spirit. 1.
