Appointments can be made for private reconciliation by calling the Parish Office. Mission Statement Both as a community of the Body of Christ and as individuals who are attempting to follow and obey Him, we do so by reflecting the Light of Christ through the prism and life of our beloved Apostle Saint Philip. Like him, we, too, are working to bring others to Christ as did he, saying, come and see Jesus of Nazareth along with us (John 1:43 ff). We also are present and at work in our community ministering as did Saint Philip who helped to feed the hungry multitudes (John 6:5ff). And most important of all, we gather for worship, prayer, and celebration of the Eucharist as did Saint Philip when he met with the risen Christ and his disciples in the Upper Room in Jerusalem (Acts 1:13ff).
2 May 20, 2012 St. Philip, pray for us! Page 2 Did you hug a tree today? If you did, you may have noticed something. It didn t hug you back. Respecting nature is important for our survival as human beings. The earth is the gigantic rock we call home. Inanimate nature supplies us with ores and other raw materials that enable us to make homes, buildings, automobiles, airplanes and a vast array of other things that help to preserve and enhance our lives. Animate nature provides us with other ingredients vitally important for our survival. Trees take in the carbon dioxide we exhale and give us the oxygen we breathe in. Plants and animals provide us with food and clothing. The layers of atmosphere that surround our planet protect us from the harmful rays of the sun. In addition to the usefulness of the things that surround us, we also live amidst beauty. Magnificent landscapes and sunsets, colorful trees and plants, and snow-covered pine trees and mountains all take our breath away as we stand back and gaze in amazement. And when we look up to the heavens at night we are filled with awe as we behold the stars and other heavenly bodies shining in splendor. Considering how beautiful and useful creation is, how can we fail to respect what God has given us as a gift? We need to preserve nature, not pollute or destroy it. But if you stop to thing about it, nature is insufficient. It can t hug us back. Only another human being can. Many scientists tell us that creation has evolved. And that s possible. Even the first book of the Bible describes creation as developing from the simple into the complex. The big difference, of We need volunteers course, is that we are told that an Almighty God created it all. The universe did not come to be by chance. There is meaning and purpose in what God has created. And what is truly amazing is that the Bible tells us that God created it all for us. We are the height of creation. Some would downplay our importance. They claim that we are only a higher form of animal. We, on the other hand, believe that we have been created in the image and likeness of God. Consequently, not only should we respect the earth as God s gift. We should also respect ourselves and all other human beings. To love another person is in some small way to love the God who created us. To hug another in love is to hug God and to in turn be embraced by the One who created us. Sadly, over the centuries we have shown too little love for God by failing to love our neighbor as ourselves. We have maimed and killed. We have bombed and obliterated others. We have aborted and let people starve to death. We have harmed others physically and emotionally. And we in turn have been hurt by others, sometimes greatly. We need to hug a tree and so preserve our natural environment. But even more importantly, we need to embrace in love all humanity, including ourselves. Can you imagine how differently world history would read if we preserved human life instead of destroying it? Volunteers needed for parish festival. 7 SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER First Reading: Acts of the Apostles 1:15-17, 20a, 220c-26 Second Reading: 1John 4:11-16 Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 103 Gospel: John 17:11b-19 Today s Gospel reading from John is known as the High Priestly Prayer. Jesus is praying for His disciples to His heavenly Father right before his death. His prayer takes on a profound significance. He wishes to share with His followers the union He enjoys with God. Accepting God s word through Jesus, the disciples share in God s holiness. Having sketched the contours of union with God, Jesus acknowledges the resistance that God s word encounters from the world. He is speaking of the dimensions of society that are against God. Jesus Himself was hated by that world and now, because of God s word, His followers will suffer the same fate. It is the very reason Jesus prays for them. Another beautiful aspect of this reading is the example Jesus gives us with prayer. Prayer is dialogue with God. Jesus shows us how we are to pray to our heavenly Father. He illustrates for us the importance to take time to pray not only for our needs but the needs of others. We should be in constant communication with God throughout our day, not only talking with God but also listening to him; as Saint Paul tells us we should pray without ceasing (1Thessalonians 5:17). Religious Education Registration Any child, in grades K-8, who does not attend a parochial school must be registered in the Religious Education Program of the parish.
