3 Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009 Page Two Father Pat s Corner Practicing Resurrection Clearly, on that Easter morning, something happened to Jesus. But something happened to his disciples, too. They went into hiding after the crucifixion but after the news of Mary Magdalene, Mary and Salome, and the resurrection appearances, they walked back into the world. They become braver and stronger; they visited strangers; they healed the sick. It s not only what they saw when they saw Jesus, or how they saw it, but what was set free in them. What if the life after death Jesus reveals is not a life exclusively for the dead? What if it s a life available to us all-something that we the living can participate in, too? What if the resurrection is not about the appearances of Jesus alone but also about what those appearances pointed to, what the Risen Jesus asked? The resurrection of Jesus is a resurrection within us, now, in this time and place. A new pattern of events is set free around us, a new way of looking at one another and our world is opened up. It is what we do with this new freedom that matters. We have to practice resurrection. As we peer into the empty tomb with Mary Magdalene and her companions, with Peter and the unnamed disciple this Easter, we are as confused and as scared as they are. But let the angel s good news open our imaginations to the possibilities; let the light that illuminates the tomb that can no longer hold Jesus illuminate our hearts to see our lives transformed in God s grace; let the Spirit of God release in us hope that we dare not trust, joy that we fear will be betrayed, dreams that we are resigned to keep hidden and unrealized. Easter is more that an event Easter is an attitude; Easter is liberation; Easter is life, our life, in the here and now. May this morning open us up to new possibilities and experiences of God s extraordinary grace transforming our most ordinary of days. ><><><>< OLMM Book Club With Father Mike Sehler will be held on Sat. 5 Easter 2009 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ Jesus: Speak, Mary, declaring what you saw wayfaring? The tomb of Christ Who is living, the glory of Jesus Resurrection. The first disciple to discover the empty tomb on that wondrous morn, Mary, gave testimony. Her testimony echoes the angel s declaration: Why look for the living among the dead? He is risen as He said! All our hopes, all our dreams, all our searching, all our desires for something more, something better, something to make our lives what we yearn for have been answered! And the answer is beyond the capacity of our yearnings even to imagine! It is not something. It is someone! It is Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God become man in obedience to the Father s plan, Who suffered and died willingly, lovingly for us. He is Jesus the Christ Who breaks the bonds of sin and death and comes triumphant from the tomb! Jesus, now the deathless one, now the glorified one, gives our lives their true meaning. By sharing our life, He gives us now a share in His life. We too are transformed by Baptism and Eucharist! We too share in the divine life of the very One and Holy Triune God! With the catechumens who at the Easter Vigil were baptized chrismated and received First Communion at the Easter Vigils across our diocese, we let the radiance of the risen Christ illumine our hearts and fill us with Easter joy. Together as the Body of Christ we proclaim His Resurrection from the dead. Together as this community of communion we are one in the Spirit of love that flows into us from God Who is love. That love is gift and it is challenge. It is gift of life and life eternal that makes us one with Him. It is challenge to us and for us that we live in unity with Him and with one another. The sign of our living the Easter mystery is not expressed in new clothes or Easter baskets. It is witnessed by our mutual commitment to live as one body and to build one another up in a unity of respect, understanding and love. This will be the proof that we have received and put into practice the new life He has given us. In these times of special challenges in our communities, our nation and the world, Easter hope opens up for us the possibility of moving beyond our fascination with more things. It calls us to re-set our priorities and place heart and home, marriage and family ahead of this world s values. It calls us to live in this world witnessing that we live what we believe, that the Lord has a more wondrous and lasting place for us in heaven. The great Doctor of the Church, St. Athanasius, tells us, Christ assures those who trust in the charity of God that the way of love is open to all and that the effort to establish a universal brotherhood will not be in vain. This love is not something reserved for important matters, but must be exercised above all in the ordinary circumstances of daily life. May the Easter message dwell in the hearts of us all as we witness His life and love to one and all. Christ is risen! Alleluia! Happy Easter to you my dear sisters and brothers in Christ. Devotedly yours in the Risen Lord, Bishop of Rockville Centre
