Mission Statement We, the Catholic community of St. Philip in Crafton, united in faith and empowered by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, are firmly committed to promoting full and active participation in the liturgical and sacramental life of the Church. We answer the call of the Gospel to bring about the kingdom of justice and peace through worship, education, service and stewardship.

2 September 4, 2011 St. Philip, pray for us! Page 2 A SPECIAL INVITATION Dear Parishioners, Many of you expressed relief and joy that our bell tower had finally been repaired and that we could once again hear the bells ring. Of course, now we need to repay the loan we received from the Diocese. The faster we pay down the principal, the less we will have to pay in interest. Many of you have already made contributions. Some of you also agreed to match my pledge of $1,000 over 5 years. But we need to have other fundraisers. We already had the Bell Tower Ball several months ago. And we are grateful to all those who organized it and who attended. Now we are sponsoring another major fundraiser. The Let the Bells Ring! Dinner at LeMont on Mount Washington will take place on Friday, October 28. Tickets are $100 each, and a table is $1,000. There will also be a Chinese Auction. In addition, if you are not able to attend, leading up to the dinner there will be a sports raffle with some great prizes. I plan to buy a table to help with this important fundraiser. I invite you to support our parish and help pay off our loan by joining me for dinner at LeMont. Even if you cannot personally attend, tickets to the event would make a great present for that someone special. And if you are looking for a great night out, you may want to let loved ones know that the dinner would make an ideal present to help you celebrate that special event in your life. There are forms in the pews in the church. Please consider helping our parish by making the dinner a great success. Thank you for all you do for our parish and for all your support. God bless you. 3 The other day, I pulled out my old St. Joseph Missal, the one I used as a child when the Mass was in Latin. As a priest I have never celebrated the Mass of the Council of Trent. I was ordained after the changes of Vatican II. But it was interesting to once again page through the prayers of Mass. The Latin, of course, was on one side of the page. An English translation was printed on the other side. It helped us to understand what the priest was praying. One of the changes that occurred with the revision of the Mass was the elimination of the Last Gospel. After the priest sent the congregation forth with the words Ite, missa est, he continued with a final prayer, followed by the recitation of the beginning of the Gospel of John. Only then did the Mass finally come to an end. The Last Gospel symbolized our mission. It begins with the words, In the beginning was the Word. Although the Mass had come to an end, it was also a new beginning. We were now to proclaim Jesus Christ to all the world. The climax of the scripture passage is found in the affirmation that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. This paralleled what had occurred at Mass. We had received Christ in the Eucharist. He was now really present within us. So when we walked out of church, we were to carry the Word with us back into the world so that He might dwell among us all. The Last Gospel was not retained in the revised Mass of Vatican II. But that does not mean that we should lose sight of what we are all about when we come to celebrate the Eucharist and hear the Word of God. The Mass is not an end in itself. We come in order to be nourished by both God s Word and the sacrament of the Eucharist. Then we are sent back into the world to do God s Will in our everyday lives and to proclaim our faith in Jesus Christ to others. We find an analogy in the meals we share with family and friends. Unlike animals, we do not just feed. We dine. But once we are nourished, we then go forth refreshed in order to fulfill our responsibilities and to face the tasks God has given us. It is the same in our spiritual lives. We gather with our family of faith and celebrate God s love for us in Jesus Christ. We also receive Him in the Eucharist. But we don t stop there. We then go back into the world to fulfill our vocations. The end of every Mass is a new beginning. PARISH STAFF CHANGES As you may have read in a past bulletin, our Director for Religious Education, Mary Lou McNamee, recently retired. Mary Lou brought her love for our children and adults, as well as her expertise, to our religious education programs. We will miss her. Fortunately, she is a parishioner. So we will still be seeing a lot of her. We wish her well in her retirement and promise to keep her in our prayers. Our new Catechetical Administrator is Sharon Dorenkott. We welcome her to our parish. Sharon brings many talents to our religious education program, and we are delighted to have her with us. When you see Mary Lou, please remember to thank her for her many years of service. Please also offer your usual St. Philip hospitality to Sharon when you meet her. Also, we are losing Bela Pater, our Director of Music Ministries. He has accepted a new position at Sacred Heart Parish in Shadyside. We wish him well and offer him our prayers and gratitude. Please also remember to thank Bela for his service to our parish and for the many beautiful liturgies that took place under his expert direction. At this time, we are looking to hire a new organist. Please be patient with us. The process usually takes some time. The St. Vincent de Paul Society is very grateful for the clothing and shoes you donate in the blue bins outside the Hope House. These bins get picked up weekly, and the items are taken to the St. Vincent de Paul Stores here in the Pittsburgh area. They help a lot of people. BUT please put the clothing and shoes in plastic bags. It makes it difficult for the drivers to unload all the items individually. Thank you for all your support.

6 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A First Reading: Ezekiel 33:7-9 Responsorial Psalm: Ps 95:1-2, 6-7, 8- St. John Chrysostom (c ) wrote a homily which still rings true today in accordance with today s gospel message. This week we need to ask ourselves if we are the mouth of Christ present in our world. You will be doing everything for the glory of God if, when you leave this place, you make yourselves responsible for saving a brother or sister, not just by accusing and rebuking him or her, but also by advising and encouraging, and by pointing out the harm done by worldly amusements, and the profit and help that come from our instruction. You will also be preparing for yourself a double reward, since as well as greatly furthering your own salvation, you will be endeavoring to heal a fellow member of Christ s body. It is the Church s pride, it is the Savior s command, not to be concerned only about our own welfare, but about our neighbor s also. Think to what high honor you raise yourself when you regard someone else s salvation as a matter of extreme importance. As far as is humanly possible you imitate God himself, for listen to what he says through the prophet: Whoever leads another from wrong to right will be as my own mouth. Homily 6, 18-20: SC 50, ) Second Reading: Romans 13:8-10 Gospel: Matthew 18:15-20 Religious Education Classes Religious Education classes for the year will begin on Sunday, September 18, Sessions run from 8:15 A.M.-9:30 A.M. Registration fee per student is $40 until Sept. 24; $45 after Sept. 25. RCIA Have you received all the Sacraments of Initiation? Are you an adult needing to be confirmed? Baptismal Preparation Classes Parents who are expecting their first child are required by the Diocese of Pittsburgh to attend a Baptismal Preparation class prior to the birth of their child. The focus of the class emphasizes the importance of the Sacrament of Baptism along with the role parents and godparents play in the life of the child in the Catholic faith. Sessions are held in the Parish Center on the fourth Sunday of the month at 1:15 P.M. by appointment. The next scheduled classes are Sept. 25, and Oct. 23, Please contact the Parish Office to schedule an appointment at (HS) Thursday, September 8, from 2:30-5 P.M. at Hope House. Teens earn service hours for participating. Teens must apply and are picked based on their talents. Positions are for one year. Contact Heidi for a list of positions or to apply. We are back from World Youth Day! We learned that Spain is anti-catholic. The priests in Ciudad Rodrigo don t wear their collars in fear of abuse. By the end of our trip the priests there were able to wear their collars because the people gained a better understanding of who Catholics are. We did service projects for the great, welcoming people of Ciudad Rodrigo. We got to see and listen to Pope Benedict XVI in Madrid. We got to eat at Spanish restaurants.

7 04 September Music & Liturgy: Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time / Year A Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Today in the Gospel, Saint Matthew s account moves into the fourth discourse of Jesus. The theme and focus is the Church. If a person should commit some wrong against you, Jesus counsels to engage the involvement of others and the Church, if necessary. The Gospel ends with a great image in this discourse on the life of the Church wherever two or more gather in His name, Christ is in their midst. The First Reading is taken from the prophet Ezekiel. In today s section, the Lord tells Ezekiel that if he does not warn the wicked and try to dissuade them from their sins, the Lord will hold the prophet responsible. The Responsorial Psalm 95 warns against hardening the heart at the sound of the Lord s voice. The Second Reading is from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans, and it assures of that the one who loves his or her neighbor follows the law of God, for love fulfills the law. Mr. Béla Pater The Roman Missal the Third Edition Starting on the 1st of September, many bishop of the United States, including our own Pittsburgh bishop, have given parishes permission to begin using the new texts of the upcoming implementation of the Roman Missal-Third Edition. These new texts that are permitted to be used at Masses from Sept 1st onward are the: GLORIA, SANCTUS and ME- MORIAL ACCLAMATIONS. All the other new texts will start to be used on the First Sunday of Advent, which is November 27th. Here at St. Philip we have begun learning a new Mass Ordinary setting by Franz Schubert. These have the new texts and when you read through the whole booklet, you can view all the new texts. Some of the Mass Ordinaries, like the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God), Kyrie (Lord, have mercy) and Amen have not changed, so we already begun using the new setting. Dear friends and family of Saint Philip Parish. It is with mixed emotions that I announce that I have accepted a new position in our diocese. I will be transitioning out from this great parish during the month of September, and already, last weekend was my last weekend of playing all the Masses here. I will be playing the 4 PM Masses this month and will help with the choir Oktoberfest. I have enjoyed being a part of this parish family and do wish you all the best in the future. My daughter will be attending my new parish school and the parish is half the distance from home for us. I will miss terribly the cantors and choir here, as well as working with our parish staff and most especially Father Walter. I hope you will keep my family in your prayers as I will do the same for all the good people of Saint Philip. I pray that a suitable replacement be made soon, so that this great choir may continue to flourish. God bless you all. Sincerely, Mr. Béla Pater OKTOBERFEST is Sat., 1 October 2011 here at St. Philip Same delicious food, just like at the Parish Festival German night! Good German food, beverages, band and dancers! Hall opens at 5:00 P.M. ~ Band plays 6:00 P.M. - 10:00 P.M. For Tickets, Seating Reservations and Information call: extension 5 for Dorothy
