Like him, we, too, are working to bring others to Christ as did he, saying, come and see Jesus of Nazareth along with us (John 1:43 ff). We also are present and at work in our community ministering as did Saint Philip who helped to feed the hungry multitudes (John 6:5ff). And most important of all, we gather for worship, prayer, and celebration of the Eucharist as did Saint Philip when he met with the risen Christ and his disciples in the Upper Room in Jerusalem (Acts 1:13ff).

3 The Sisters of Charity have served our parish and school for 130 years. The priests assigned to our parish have also served us for 175 years! I sometimes wonder if people know that I am diocesan and not a religious order priest. The latter belong to a religious community and take vows, usually the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Diocesan priests like myself, however, do not take vows. Instead, we promise obedience to the bishop and to the Church. Also, we do not belong to a religious community. We are part of a priestly fraternity. But unlike religious order priests, we do not return to monasteries or friaries for community events and prayer. We live among the people of the parish. You, the parishioners, are our community. There are very few diocesan priests and laypeople who are canonized saints. Diocesan priests who went on to become bishops and popes have been canonized. But most recognized saints seem to have belonged to religious communities. Of course, a lot of diocesan priests and laypeople have been canonized because they were martyred for their faith. But those who were not martyred are rarely found in the Church s calendar of saints. St. Thomas More, for example, was a husband and father. But he was also LEST WE FORGET a martyr. Among parish priests, St. John Vianney is one of the few parish priests who was canonized even though he was not a martyr. I guess what I m trying to say is that we diocesan priests, together with you the parishioners, are ordinary people just trying our best to grow in faith and love. Ordained priests proclaim the Word of God and offer the sacraments to the people. The laypeople in turn support the priests with their prayers. They also proclaim the Word of God to priests by their example of faith. Together, we are part of the parish family of St. Philip s and have been for 175 years. As a family, we have our ups and downs. We do not always agree on everything. We are all sinners, including the priests. But we all believe in the mercy of Christ and strive to live together as people blessed with many different gifts given by the same Holy Spirit. In 25 years we will celebrate the 200 th anniversary of our parish. Perhaps a few parishioners will still remember me. But most will not. Eventually I will become just a name attached to a faded photograph. And that is the way it should be for all parish priests. We do not come to preach ourselves. We are called to preach Christ; and He alone should be remembered and remain the center of our faith. Happy Anniversary! Memorial day traditionally marks the beginning of summer. Pools open, and graduation parties abound. But lest we forget We would not have any freedom were it not for the sacrifices of our many veterans. We would not be able to practice our faith or even engage in works of charity in Christ s name. Many of those who served our nation in the military literally gave their lives to preserve our freedoms. So amid all the picnics and celebrations, let us remember those who serve us in the military and all our veterans. They deserve our prayers and deepest gratitude. Please remember in your prayers Frances Fink, mother of Linda Grapes, and Rosemary Gioia, mother of Sam Gioia, who entered eternal life recently. May they rest in peace. Recently Baptized were Bodhi Walden Hedman, Juniper Quinn Lageman, Callie Nicole McArdle, Aria Elizabeth Mikula, Lily Norah Schelb, Benjamin Robert Strahler. We welcome them and congratulate their parents and godparents.

4 GREAT BEGINNINGS LAST A LIFETIME GRACE Program:. The last GRACE program of the school year will be held on June 9, 2015 and will remember fathers both living and deceased and will highlight Sacramentals. Deadline for enrollment is May 26 th. Enrollments made during the summer will be remembered in September. Memorial Day Prayer Service In observation of Memorial Day, our children will be praying for our deceased veterans and active duty service men and women at 12:20 P.M. in Church on May 26 th. If you wish to have someone remembered, the names to Mrs. Huth at chuth@spsangelway.org by 10:00 A.M. Tuesday. All are invited to join the children in prayer that day. Talent Show The Stars were out at St. Philip School to perform in the school s annual Talent Show. Over 55 students participated in the event which showcased the wide variety of activities and interests in which the children participate. Performances ranged from joke telling, clog and Irish dancing, pantomime, karate, singing, and instrument playing of all kinds.

5 Track Congratulations to coaches Brandon Bergstedt and Bruce Mathews and the St. Philip Track Team who put on an impressive show at the Diocesan Championships. Varsity Girls took 2nd place overall. Here are the finishes: Ashley Hudson: 2nd in individual 100 meters and 2nd in long jump Ana Bergstedt: 2nd in 1 mile and 3rd in 1/2 mile. The final standings of the individual 400 meters race are under review, with Ana currently in 3rd place in that finish as well. Lauren Clutter: 1st in javelin Kasey Gamrod: 3rd in javelin Linda Ashby: 3rd place in individual 200 meters The relay team of Ana Bergstedt, Ashely Hudson, Rose Fischer and Lauren Clutter took 2nd in the 4 X 400 and 2nd in the 4 X 100 races. Kudos as well to the boys varsity relay team of Evan Cormick, Nevan Crossey and Isiah and Bryce Mathews, who missed third place by only 1/10th of a second. When you consider most of this team had to "race up" into an older age bracket, that's really saying something! The girls JV relay team was short a person so Julian Paul stepped in to help. The team gave it a valiant effort, but since they were racing with the JV boys, they were unable to medal. Truly, ALL TEAM MEMBERS, many of whom competed as rookies, deserve recognition for an impressive year: Molly Frick, Lauren Rodriguez, Bernie Komorosky, Arabella Sargent, Janneselle Umalin, and Meghan McCoy (who was ill the day of championships).
