1 Saint Philip Parish April 6, 2014 Fifth Sunday of Lent 50 West Crafton Avenue Pittsburgh PA Mission Statement Both as a community of the Body of Christ and as individuals who are attempting to follow and obey Him, we do so by reflecting the Light of Christ through the prism and life of our beloved Apostle Saint Philip. Like him, we, too, are working to bring others to Christ as did he, saying, come and see Jesus of Nazareth along with us (John 1:43 ff). We also are present and at work in our community ministering as did Saint Philip who helped to feed the hungry multitudes (John 6:5ff). And most important of all, we gather for worship, prayer, and celebration of the Eucharist as did Saint Philip when he met with the risen Christ and his disciples in the Upper Room in Jerusalem (Acts 1:13ff). 3 April 6, 2014 St. Philip, pray for us! Page 3 It s hard to see Christ in others. Sometimes it s even hard to see Christ in ourselves. After all, we are all sinners. It s especially difficult to recognize the presence of Christ in people who hate and despise us or people with whom we disagree. And yet, amazingly, Christ looks at each and every one of us and sees us all as worth dying for. Why is that? Why would Christ want to show us so much love, especially since we are so hesitant to love Him in return? Perhaps we are puzzled by Christ s selfless love because we fail to understand what true love is. St. John tells us in his First Letter that the essence of love is this: not that we have loved God, but that God has loved us first. True love is selfless. It is willing to sacrifice for others. It is universal. True love is not limited to just one category of people. It embraces all peoples. It is offered first, with no conditions attached. St. Gregory of Nazianzen wrote that if our love for Christ is real, we will show it by loving others just as Christ loves us. We will especially show concern for the poor in our midst. In referring to the Gospels, he says that we should love Christ not only at a meal, as some did who invited Jesus to dinner, not only by anointing Him as Mary did, by lending Him a tomb as Joseph of Arimathaea did, or by giving Him gold, frankincense and myrrh as the Magi did. We should honor Christ by showing mercy to others, especially to those who are poor, homeless and without hope. Then we will know what true love is. In our parish we try to do just that. We offer charity to people in our own country as well as in faraway lands. After all, Jesus told us that if we help those who are like us, then we are no different than the pagans of His time who loved their own kind but despised others. So our love must be universal. We try to be Good Samaritans who reach out to others, no matter how different they may be. Sometimes our charity is organized through our parish, school, CCD and various organizations. More often, charity is given to others by families and individuals in quiet ways that are rarely if ever noticed. And when that happens, we experience, at least in some small way, what true love is all about. Lent is a time of penance. It is also meant to be a season in which we commit ourselves to almsgiving. The early Christians were noted for helping the poor. St. Gregory s comments above are an indication of that concern. They saw themselves as spiritually poor and in need of God s help. And in every Eucharist, Christ gives Himself to us as alms. So, they reasoned, how could they not in turn give alms to others? If Christ sees us as worth loving, how can we not fail to see Christ in others and love them too? GARDEN VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Now that spring has returned (sort of), we will be looking to beautify our church grounds. If you have a green thumb, you are invited to adopt an area near the church, convent/office or rectory. You may donate and plant any flowers and small plants you think appropriate to the season and area. The garden will require periodic weeding and watering. If you are interested, please contact the Parish Office at ext. 5. EASTER EGG HUNT Our annual Easter Egg Hunt will take place on the church and convent lawns on Holy Saturday, April 19 beginning promptly at 10:00 A.M. Refreshments and crafts will be available afterwards in Fr. Kelty Hall. If you would like to donate candy for the children, please drop your donations off at the parish office. The Easter Egg Hunt is open to all children in grades 4 and under. Please remember in your prayers David Warren LaSota and Kathleen Faugh who entered eternally life recently. May they rest in peace.

5 8th Grade Boys Step Up for Children's Cancer Research We are so proud of St Philip 8th graders Jack Shorthouse and Michael Kanavy who formed a team (St. Philip 8th Grade Boys) to help the St Baldrick Foundation fight childhood cancer. The St. Baldrick s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long, healthy lives. The boys participated in the event at Claddagh Irish Pub which since 2005 has shaved over 400 heads (men & women) and granted $900,000 to Pittsburgh Children's Hospital making this truly a local event. The St Philip Team raised over $1100 for the foundation and Jack and Michael showed their total commitment to the cause by having their heads shaved in support of cancer patients. Super Speller Congratulations to 5 th grader Nevan Crossey, who will represent St. Philip in the Diocesewide Spelling Bee! April Calendar 11 - Stations of the Cross 16-11:30 A.M. (Church) Religious Education News by Walter Schulte Gospel Reflection Part of today s Gospel is read at funerals. (John 11:23-27) However, this Gospel is about more than just the resurrection of the dead: it is about hope in seemingly hopeless situations. While Jesus delay in coming to Bethany may seem as if He is being inconsiderate, Jesus is showing us that God is not subject to our human prerogatives. Rather, God is able to see the bigger picture and sometimes He appears to delay, not because He does not love us but rather because He wants to manifest His glory to us and show His love in a way that we would not normally expect. Is there a situation in your life that you need to entrust to Him that appears seemingly hopeless? Let us entrust that situation to Him this week. Marriage Moment Jesus mentions something in the Gospel that should be pretty obvious: if we walk by the light, we do not stumble; however, if we walk by night, we stumble. In marriage, one of the ways to walk by light is by open communication, which as the couple that presents on communication at our annual Pre-Cana Program reminds the engaged couples is more than just an exchange of information, such as a text or a phone call. On the other hand, if there is a lack of communication, there is often stumbling in a marriage. Consider talking some time this week to have an open conversation with your spouse. Confirmation 2014 Congratulations to the following young people from our parish who received the fullness of the gift of the Spirit on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 when Bishop David Zubik came and celebrated the Sacrament.
