Mission Statement Both as a community of the Body of Christ and as individuals who are attempting to follow and obey Him, we do so by reflecting the Light of Christ through the prism and life of our beloved Apostle Saint Philip. Like him, we, too, are working to bring others to Christ as did he, saying, come and see Jesus of Nazareth along with us (John 1:43 ff). We also are present and at work in our community ministering as did Saint Philip who helped to feed the hungry multitudes (John 6:5ff). And most important of all, we gather for worship, prayer, and celebration of the Eucharist as did saint Philip when he met with the risen Christ and his disciples in the Upper Room in Jerusalem (Acts 1:13ff).

4 In a recent The Wizard of Id comic strip, one lady says to another: Even though I can t afford it, I only buy my parents the finest, most expensive gifts for their birthdays and holidays. The other lady asks why. She replies: I don t want to inherit junk. I thought the comic strip was rather humorous. It was also thought-provoking. It caused me to pause and reflect why we do good things for others. Is it out of love? Or are we doing them for a more selfish reason? Sometimes actions that outwardly appear virtuous are really not. Our bad intentions undermine their apparent goodness. Judas kiss, for example, was not a sign of friendship but a signal to arrest Jesus. It was a mark of betrayal. His treacherous inward intention perverted the good meaning we usually attach to this mark of affection. It is not enough that we do good deeds. We must also have the right intention for doing them. If we give someone a gift, but expect something in return, we change the gift into a bribe. If we treat others with kindness because we want them to like us, our intention is selfish. And if we are generous to others because it makes us feel good, how can we claim to be loving? There is nothing wrong with feeling satisfaction if we helped someone in difficult straits. But the good feelings should be a consequence of our virtuous action, not the reason for doing it. Good intentions, of course, are not sufficient. The road to hell is paved with good intentions, as the old saying goes. We can be rather clever at making grandiose plans to help others, and then fail to come through. And so our selfless desires never result in selfless deeds. Lent is a good time to not only purify our intentions, but also to put them into practice. When we examine our consciences at the end of the day, we should certainly acknowledge our sins and ask for God s forgiveness. But we should also reflect on whether or not we took advantage of the opportunities for Good that came our way. In addition, shouldn t we also ask ourselves if we performed them for selfish or selfless reasons? When Jesus died on the cross, He received nothing in return for His sacrifice. He did it, not for any sins of His own, but for ours. He gave His life out of total, selfless love so that we might achieve salvation. So when we look at the crucifix, we behold not only Christ s outward sacrifice, but also the inner love that led Him to the hill of Calvary. How can we not imitate His example so that, with purified intentions, we may better perform selfless acts of love for God and others? BIBLE CLASS Fr. Walt will conduct two Lenten Bible classes. The first session will be on the Passion Narrative in Mark s Gospel and will take place on Monday, March 19. The second session will be on the Passion Narrative in John s Gospel on Monday, March 26. Both sessions will take place in Fr. Kelty Hall and will run from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Please BYOB (Bring Your Own Bible). Festival Meeting Our next meeting will be on Monday, March 5 at 7:00 P.M. in the parish center. All booth chairpersons; please make every effort to attend. 6 Bell Tower March Madness St. Philip Parish is having a fundraiser to help pay off the debt incurred by the repair of our bell tower. It follows the 2012 NCAA Men s Division 1 Basketball Tournament (March Madness). The way it works is: 1. You purchase a square on a 10x10 grid for $ Once the grid is filled, numbers 0-9 are drawn randomly and placed on the grid s axis. 3. The horizontal axis is labeled the winning team. The vertical axis is labeled losing team. 4. Your numbers represent the last digit of the winning team s score and last digit of the losing team s score per each game played throughout the entire tournament. For example, if your numbers are: winning team 1 and losing team 9 and Pitt beats WVU 71-59, you win! Every game played in the tournament (starting with round one) will generate a winner. Because you keep your numbers throughout the tournament, you have a great chance of winning multiple times per round or in different rounds. You don t have to fill out a bracket or know anything about college basketball. Just know that your odds of winning are great, and the parish greatly appreciates your support. The payout schedule is as follows: Round 1= $25 Field of 64 Round 2= $50 Field of 32 Round 3= $75 Sweet Sixteen Round 4= $100 Elite Eight Round 5= $200 Final Four Round 6= $500 Championship The two play-in games known as the first four are not included in this event. When we sell all 100 squares, we will be able to claim a $1500 profit. The event pays out a total of $3500 in winnings. Act quickly because the grid will fill up fast. Please make checks payable to St. Philip Church (write March Madness in memo) and send to Parish Office March Madness (Please print) Name Phone Number Address Sunday Collection (2-26) _ $ 5,121 Parish Share $ 13,331 Organ Fund $ 2,154 Bell Tower $ 452 Thank you for your generous donation.
