An Over ervie view of Children s ministr try and communication ideas for Easter for print and online Easter is great fun for children, but it can also be a time of significant spiritual growth for them and outreach for your church, if you are intentional about your communications in print and online, ahead of time, at Easter events, and with your followup afterwards. There are lots of ideas in this booklet on the type of publications you can create, along with sample publications for you. There are small illustrations of the communication pieces in the booklet and at the end are full-size PDFs that are ready to print. On the back side of the PDFs you can print your info and personalize them for your church. Consider creating an overall graphic image theme for your Children s Easter Communications it isn t difficult to do Having an overall theme image ties together all the various pieces that you use for Easter outreach. You can use the ones I ve put together for you, or you can create your own. I ve put together for you both a video and PDF instructions on of how to do this. The video is on the website The PDF instructions are part of this booklet. How to create the bunny graphic is covered both by a video on the website: and in a tutorial that is part of this booklet. Once you have your graphic image you can use it for a unified theme for all the rest of your Easter communications. Below are small illustrations of the various pieces you can create. The next section discusses them in more detail.

Print outreach ideas prior to Easter Parents are often looking for ways to make Easter meaningful to their children. Resurrection Cookies are one of the ways you can help them do that. These are cookies you make with children that visually provides a retelling of Jesus death and resurrection. If you give parents a PDF handout with the directions and verses all done up for them this can be a tool they can use not only for themselves, but they could also use the handout as a gift for a neighbor. You church members could offer to gather some of the neighborhood children to make the cookies and it could be a very natural way to share the message of Easter, invite people to Easter at church, or to get a conversation started about Jesus. Resurrection Cookies handouts There are three versions of the handout one with the bunny image that goes throughthe other Easter communications, one clipart and one with photos. all have an introductory page, then the page with the cookie recipe and instructions, and finally a page with the verses printed out so it s easier to use without having to look up Bible verses as you go along.

In addition to Resurrection cookies, another popular Easter message for children is the Jelly Bean Prayer. The Jelly Bean Prayer The Jelly Bean Prayer uses the colors of Jelly Beans as a way of sharing the gospel message. You can use this as an object lesson or for a children s sermon. After you talk about it, you can give out copies to the children in the audience. The printed examples are 1/4 of and 8 1/2 by 11 inch page. They would probably work best printed on light weight card stock. Here is the Jelly Bean Prayer: Jelly Bean Prayer Red is for the blood He gave, Green is for the grass he made. Yellow is for the sun so bright, Orange is for the edge of night. Black is for the sins we made, White is for the grace he gave. Purple is for his hour of sorrow, Pink is for our new tomorrow. A bag full of jelly beans is yummy to eat, It s a picture, a promise, a special treat, To help us remember Jesus work complete, Gives us hope beyond any earthly sweet. Invitations to Easter Events You can use both the Resurrection Cookies and the Jelly Bean Prayer as invitations. You can also create a fun, upbeat invitation for kids to give to their friends using an image you can use in another publication to get people to come back for activities after Easter. Below are two that use the Church Bunny theme, they are ready-to-print PDFs, just personalize on the back.

Don t forget communications at the event to bring them back Remember, people have no idea what you do on a regular basis if you don t tell them. Be sure every person who visits your Easter events goes home with something that tells them what you do on a regular basis and invites them back. Use your website to explain Easter events Many churches have special events at Easter for children. One church in our city has a petting zoo every year. It s a fun event for kids and they serve snacks, play games. Lots of unchurched people from the neighborhood surrounding the church attend. The church doesn t do a petting zoo every Sunday. They don t serve special snacks each week to the kids and they don t have an Easter Egg Hunt each week. Also, the children s ministry doesn t even meet at the same time on a regular basis that they hold the special events for Easter. Yet somehow, because of the petting zoo, and all the money and time spent on the goodies and the Easter Egg Hunt, the people in the children s ministry assume that the unchurched families in the area surrounding the church will come back to Sunday School the following Sunday because their kids had so much fun. They don t. But if you give them information about your church, the children s program, and invite them back for regular activities they will respond. Your website is a great place for all the information you can t put on a small card. Church websites should follow the pattern of providing answers to questions If you are a parent of young children, when you see an advertisement for a program for kids, a new game, a special food, anything advertised for kids, what is the first thing you will do to check it out? Today, you will check out the website. You go to the website to have questions answered for the product you are considering. On any commercial product,

advertisement, or program of any kind, the website is always prominently displayed and the site itself, if the company wants credibility to sell its products, must be one that explains and illustrates the benefits of the product. It should answer questions, tell you were to get the product, and give you instructions on how to contact someone for more information if you still have questions. If this is the obvious that any commercial business does; why do we assume in the church that people will know all about what we offer kids on a weekly basis if we don t tell them? It s like this for every area of the church, somehow we just assume that if we have a marvelous and moving Easter service that people will automatically know what they are supposed to do to connect with the church on an ongoing basis. This assumption might have worked twenty years ago when the church culture permeated our world and everyone had a pretty good idea what churches did on a weekly basis, but that is no longer true today. You can create a specialized website for Easter. On the website are the instructions for a easily creating a specialized website banner. Checklist for what needs to be on your website to connect with your unchurched guests Ahead of time you need to prepare a section on your website for people who will participate in children s events at Easter. Be sure it has a clear link from the home page; even better yet might be the creation of a blog or linked website with its own URL that parents could go to directly. Checklist for what this website or web section needs to contain: An upbeat thank you for the families who participated in the Easter events. Explanation of what you do on a regular basis in the children s program at church, in an upbeat, friendly way. Pictures of your children s staff and volunteer helpers. Give their background and experience of working with kids and a church address where visitors reach them if they have more questions. Answer safety and security questions; assure parents of the screening

you do for children s workers; explain your child check-in and safety guidelines. Maybe a Q&A about your children s ministry; a FAQ section where you actually have someone in the community tell you the kinds of questions they have for your children s ministry and complete answers to the questions. Articles, resources, anything else you can think of that tells folks you love kids, love Jesus and want them to come back. Similar information to the checklist above should be repeated for every ministry area of the church because after visiting, if you have challenged people with the reality of Easter they will want to find out more. How to get people to your website Don t let your website be as hard to find as an Easter egg. Ahead of time create invitation cards, postcards and door-hangers, with your website prominently displayed on them. At your church service, provide a bulletin insert that tells them what you do on a regular basis and invites them to check out your church and the Christian faith. Again, make your website URL clear and easy to find. If you do that, and have the information above on your website, it will make a huge difference in your lasting relationship with people who visit at Easter. Tak ake the time to make sure all your hard wor ork makes a difference No matter what, Easter is always a tremendous amount of work for your church. By using the ideas here, planning ahead, and praying lots your hard work will result in ongoing relationships with children and their families that can result in changed lives for eternity. the Church Bunny says, Lots of work means lots of little kids will come to know Jesus...and that makes it all worth it.

How to create custom graphics from photos from this to this A step-by-step tutorial by Yvon Prehn

Intro: Snagit is a $49 program that created the image I ll show you in this tutorial. It is available from: You can try a free trial. 1. Open the program and for this project, click on Snagit Editor. The program does so many things, but for this, we re just going to be doing some very simple image manipulation. 2. Open up an image you have saved. This image was downloaded from: When editing images like we will be doing with this program, don t worry about quality, or extra material in them, Snagit will change everything. The only thing I wanted in this picture was the little bunny.

3. Select the Crop tool. 4. Draw the square around the bunny, using the cross-hairs that will come up with this tool. A dotted line will appear around the section you want selected. 5. Click and it will select the bunny. 6. To see what you are doing with the bunny, you want to increase the size. An easy way to do that is to go to the slider at the bottom of the page and just slide it over until the image is the size you want. Now you have a cropped photo, not an illustration, but that is about to change..

7. Up at the top of the page, click on Filters. When you get time, play around with them, they all create a large variety of effects. What I am going to be sharing is a process I have found very helpful, and what I do initially to most of the images I select. This works for me, but many other options are possible. 8. First Click on: Posturize Various levels will come up. This first click in on 2 levels. It will result in a very sharp contrast. This works for some images, but not many. I usually select level Selecting level 8 turns your photograph into a graphic. Sometimes that is all you want or need to do, but I m seldom done having fun with the image at this point. One more thing will make it into a unique graphic.

10. Go back up to the top and now select: Color Effects In the drop-down menu, select: Color Correction 11. This is where you can have all kinds of fun! I always start with Hue. Moving the slider will give you many different color variations, some subtle, some wild. You can adjust the others, but they don t make as drastic changes. After making a blue bunny with purple grass and other crazy options, I decided to go with just a little bit of variation, adding some more pink to the green. 12. Here is the finished Bunny. You can then save it as a jpg or png or a variety of other formats. You can also vary the size and you can crop it a bit more like I did on the bunny. After I finished the bunny, I decided to do the little cart, so Bunny had a friend. I used the same process. Once you have the final image you can use it in a variety of coordinated communication pieces: Print, web, whatever. On the next page are some samples of other image manipulations using the same process.

Here are a few other examples of images using exactly the same process. I find images of people with strong light and shadow make very interesting illustrations by: Posturize 2 levels, Choose a wild color correction For the lily, to turn it from blah photo to nice illustration: Posturize 8 levels Color correction to Pink on the Hue slider For bridge: Posturized custom level with Posturize slider, then saved with various color correction options Final note: I hate to waste time, so at night while watching TV, I have my laptop and a variety of photos either from free photo sites on the web or from pictures I or other family members have taken. I open up Snagit, any image I ve saved and start modifying, trying things. Though this process is very easy to do, to shift through and vary the images can take a lot of time and this way I half watch TV, chat with my husband and the images are done and filed away for when needed.

Two Children's invitations to Easter events and a follow-up bulletin insert by Yvon Prehn, Strategy for Children's events at Easter might consist of simple publications, but these simple publications can have far reaching results in how they bring people to your Easter church service and how many return on an ongoing basis. To start, children's invitations to Easter events can and should be very different than the ones you send out to your community and that you give to adults. Many churches have wonderful activities for children at this time of year and children are never too young to learn how to be inviters. The invitations here provide tools to help them do that. Both invitations are one quarter page size and are ready to print PDFs. They would work quite well printed on light-weight card stock. A heavy paper would also work well. Make up quite a few of them and give them out to the children in your church. Along with giving out the invitations, this is a great time to teach children that church events are not just times to enjoy for themselves. Church events are opportunities to introduce their friends to the church and to Jesus. When children invite their friends, when they see families come who have never been to church, when they see the people at your church welcome and enfold visitors and when they see their friends come to know Jesus these experiences will teach them the joy of evangelism in a practical, experiental way. No matter how wonderful your children's program for Easter, you don't want people to experience one Sunday and never come back. You need to give them something as they leave your church or children's program that lets them know what else you have going on and invites them to return. No matter how impressed they were or how much the like you, you need to give them the concrete details that will actually link them to your church events.

A Bulletin insert or giveaway to remind people to come back to your children's program after Easter. This ready-to-print PDF can be personalized on the back with information specific to your church. Please be sure to include your website and be sure that on it you have detailed information about your children's program and contact information if people need more information. Intentional work will result in eternal life-changes It is a lot of work to do all that needs to be done in your children's ministry at Easter, but taking the time to intentionally involve the children in inviting and to intentionally create complete follow-up materials will result in eternal life-changes for the people who respond to Jesus through your hard work. In closing I want to emphasize how important it is that you involve the children of your church in the inviting process. It is so easy for kids to think that Easter is all about the goodies that they are going to get and it is so easy for parent's to expect the church to provide a good time for their children. That attitude misses the whole point of Easter. Please take the time to teach your children to give as Jesus gave and to take the time to invite their friends to Easter events at your church.

Easter Jelly Bean Prayer for Children's Ministry by Yvon Prehn, By using the colors of Jelly Beans, this prayer is a visual way to share the gospel message to children and to the adults with the children sometimes candy isn't nearly as intimidating as a sermon. It is useful at Easter to enclose in goodie bags, to use as an invitation, use as an illustration during a lesson or children's sermon. Below is the text for the Jelly Bean Prayer that you can use to create materials for Easter for Children. Jelly Bean Prayer Red is for the blood He gave, Green is for the grass he made. Yellow is for the sun so bright, Orange is for the edge of night. Black is for the sins we made, White is for the grace he gave. Purple is for his hour of sorrow. Pink is for our new tomorrow. A bag full of jelly beans is yummy to eat, It s a picture, a promise, a special treat, To help us remember Jesus work complete, Gives us hope beyond any earthly sweet. I recommend printing them on lightweight card stock which gives them more body for children to hold and also turns it into a piece that a family can save and perhaps put on the fridge or family bulletin board.

Children's Resurrection Cookies, 3 versions by Yvon Prehn, For a great Strategy to teach children about Easter, involve parents and provide an outreach tool, NOTHING beats Resurrection Cookies. When you make the cookies, you visually illustrate Jesus suffering, burial, death and resurrection. Because you are doing it with cookies, it is much less intimidating for people who don't go to church to be involved with it. Sharing cookies is also a much less frightening way to share their faith than other methods might be for the people in your church. This Resurrection Cookie handout that uses photos for illustration. At the end of this introduction is the text for the handouts, including the introduction, recipe, and Bible verses if you choose to create your own verses of the handouts or if you want to put the material on your website or in a church newsletter. You have my permission to use it freely. The three versions of the PDFs have the same text, but one uses the Church Bunny Theme for illustration, one photos for illustration and the other one uses clip art. On this site are a number of additional Children's Easter Communications that use the Church Bunny as a graphic (plus the training video on how to create it, go to the Seasonal tab/easter). The other two versions are stand-alone ones. The text is the same for all of them choose a style that suits you best or use the text below to create your own version. Resurrection Cookies Handout using Church Bunny Theme Why these work well to share the message of Easter Making these cookies gives you the opportunity to act out and discuss the Easter story, with a focus on Jesus death and resurrection with children in your church, family, or any group. Making them can also be a wonderful project for neighbors who may be unchurched.

Every child loves goodies, but making Resurrection Cookies gives you an opportunity to share the true Easter story. For many children they really do not know that Easter is about Jesus instead of bunnies. Making these cookies can be a way to introduce them to the true Easter story in a non-threatening way. The cookies share the entire story of Jesus because as you make these meringue cookies, you start with Jesus' trial. You illustrate how he was mistreated when you break up the nuts and add vinegar to the recipe. This Resurrection Cookie handout uses clipart for illustrations. The process continues with each step of adding an ingredient or preparing the cookie mixture illustrating what happened. With each action there is also a Bible verse or two that you read along with it. After all the preparation is done, you put the cookies into a hot oven, turn off the heat, and seal the door. This is a picture of Jesus being placed in the tomb. In the morning you open the oven and when you bite into a cookie it is empty! Just like the tomb was on Easter morning. This is wonderful handout to give to parents and Sunday School teachers for a special activity during the Easter Season. You could also consider making up extra copies as a handout for people to give to their neighbors. If you do that, include information about your church and invite them to an Easter event at church. Page 1: Cover page text for Resurrection Cookies An Easter Goodie with a Message: Chocolate is wonderful and the great goodies at this time of year are part of the fun, but why not take children s love of goodies and use it for a teaching moment? You can do that with Resurrection Cookies Making these cookies allows you to act out and discuss the Easter story with children in your church, family, or any group. On the next page are the directions for making Resurrection Cookies and the Bible verses to read with them.

This is wonderful handout to give to parents and Sunday School teachers for a special activity during the Easter Season. You could also consider making it something for people to give to neighbors. If doing that, include information about your church and invite them to an Easter event at church. You can make as many copies as you want and pass it around at church, mom s groups, Sunday School classes or small groups. Rejoice! Christ is Risen! Page 2: RECIPE PAGE FOR RESURRECTION COOKIES Resurrection Cookies These are wonderful goodies with a message that goes beyond the yummy treats we expect at Easter and uses them as a lesson about the real meaning of Easter Jesus and his death and resurrection. Ingredients: 1 cup whole pecans 1 teaspoon vinegar 3 egg whites Pinch of salt 1 cup granulated sugar Zip-lock plastic bag Wooden spoon Masking tape Bible (verses are also on the next page) Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Place pecans in zip-lock bag and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested he was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3. Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 tsp. vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross he was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19: Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John. 10: Sprinkle a little salt into each child s hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus followers, and the bitterness of our own

sin. Read Luke 23:27. So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Psalms 34:8 and John 3:16. Beat egg whites with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God s eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3. Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper-covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus body was laid. Read Matthew 27: Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of masking tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus s tomb was sealed. Read Matt. 27: Now it is time to leave the cookies and go to bed. Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20, 22. The next morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Resurrection day, Jesus followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matthew 28:1-9. HE HAS RISEN! Page 3: Bible Verses used with Resurrection Cookies John 19:1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. 2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, 3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. John 19:28After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. John 10:10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

Luke 23:27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. Psalms 34:8O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. John 3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Matthew 27:57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus disciple: 58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. 59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. Matthew 27:65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. 66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch. John 16: 20Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. Matthew 28:1In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: 4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. 5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. 7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. 8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. 9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

Bible Verses used with Resurrection Cookies John 19:1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. 2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, 3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. John 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. Luke 23:27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. Psalms 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. John 16: 20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. Matthew 28:1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
