3 From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost, bringing the Easter season to a close. Pentecost, the commemoration of the coming of the Holy Spirit, is considered the birthday of the Church. Reflecting on our call to be ecclesial, Pope Francis said in his homily for this solemnity in 2013: Journeying together in the Church, under the guidance of her pastors who possess a special charism and ministry, is a sign of the working of the Holy Spirit. Having a sense of the Church is something fundamental for every Christian, every community and every movement. It is the Church which brings Christ to me, and me to Christ; parallel journeys are very dangerous! When we venture beyond (proagon) the Church s teaching and community the Apostle John tells us in his Second Letter - and do not remain in them, we are not one with the God of Jesus Christ (cf. 2 Jn v. 9). So let us ask ourselves: Am I open to the harmony of the Holy Spirit, overcoming every form of exclusivity? Do I let myself be guided by him, living in the Church and with the Church? Pope Francis is very strong in his ecclesiology. In another homily, he said, It is impossible to find Jesus outside the Church... it is an absurd dichotomy to want to live with Jesus without the Church, to follow Jesus outside the Church, to love Jesus without the Church... if we want to take the path of the mundane, negotiating with the world, we will never have the consolation of the Lord. If we seek only consolation, it will be superficial... [pray that we] move forward... carrying the name of Jesus in the heart of Holy Mother Church, which is as St. Ignatius said, hierarchical and catholic. - Pope Francis. (Homily, April 23, 2013). The Spirit is experienced within the communion of the Church, hierarchical and catholic. The Spirit gives life. As we stated in our recent series on obstacles to the mission of the Church, evil is that force, residing either inside or outside of human beings, that seeks to kill life or liveliness. And good is its opposite. Goodness is that which promotes life and liveliness. In our different states in life, in mission, and in ministry, we must seek always to be docile before the Spirit moving within the Church. In the Gospel of John, Jesus says, I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. Continually, then, we must look within ourselves, our mission, and our ministry, to see what may be hindering our communion with the Lord and His Church, to see what may be separating us, our mission, and our ministry, from the vine, keeping us from being docile before the life-giving Spirit within the Church, hierarchical and catholic. In spiritual combat, we must prune from us that which diminishes life and reach for that which uplifts life. The Church, also, must prune those entrusted to her care, so that the life of the whole may be uplifted. There are those engaged in ministry within the Church who separate themselves from the proper shepherds of the Church. They refuse to place themselves freely under the authority of others within the Church universal, the local Church, meaning the diocese, and its microcosm, the parish. Though they claim to minister on behalf of the Church, they separate themselves and their ministry from the vine. They bring a spirit of entitlement, obstinacy, and disobedience, creating discouragement, discord, and division. Such individuals, who diminish life rather than build it up, are branches in need of pruning. No one is entitled to ministry. One is called to ministry by the proper shepherds of the Church. Even those in the presbyteral order can, through a lack of self-awareness and prudential judgement, get pulled into such dynamics. They often align themselves precisely with those in a community in need of pruning. As the Cuban saying goes: Dios los crea y ellos se juntan. There is nothing of God in their collaboration, though, and the actual origin of their relationships is often obvious to everyone except those most intimately involved. We are called to communion with Christ in the heart of His Church, which is hierarchical and catholic. This communion is present in the Church universal, in the particular church (the diocese) and in the parish church, which is a community of faith and an organic community, that is, constituted by the ordained ministers and other Christians, in which the pastor-who represents the diocesan bishop - is the hierarchical bond with the entire particular Church (St. John Paul II). Such a communion requires humility and obedience on our part; we must recognize that we are a small piece of something bigger than ourselves. We are not the vine but the branches. Jesus Christ is the vine. Let us open ourselves to the pruning of the life-giving Spirit. Let us be docile before the Spirit. Let us be people of communion in the unity of the Spirit within the Church. Communion with Christ is being on a journey, a permanent ascent to the true height of our calling... because this journey to true life, to being men [and women] conformed to the model of the Son of God Jesus Christ is beyond our powers, this journeying is also always a state of being carried. We find ourselves, so to speak, in a roped party with Jesus Christ together with him in the ascent to the heights of God. He pulls us and supports us. Letting oneself be part of a roped party is part of following Christ; we accept that we cannot do it on our own... The humble act of entering into the we of the Church is part of it holding on to the roped party, the responsibility of communion, not letting go of the rope because of our bullheadedness and conceit. Humbly believing with the Church... is an essential condition for following Christ... The humility of beingwith is essential to the ascent (Pope Benedict XVI, Palm Sunday Homily, 2010).
