Official Publication of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia VOL No. 2 FEBRUARY 7, 2010 ENGLISH VERSION SHROUD OF TURIN EXHIBITION COMING TO CATHEDRAL BEGINNING FEBRUARY 21, 2010 AT 5PM The Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral will host an exhibition of an authentic replica of The Shroud of Turin. This is the 9th replica of the Turin Shroud sanctioned by the Vatican. Archbishop Stefan Soroka, of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for Ukrainians, has been able to procure this relic for exhibition beginning February 21, 2010 through June 29, 2010 at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in the Northern Liberties neighborhood in Philadelphia. The official beginning of the Exhibit will be celebrated at a vespers prayer service on February 21, 2010 at 5PM with Archbishop Soroka and dignitaries presiding. All are welcome! (continued on next page) At a planning meeting for the Shroud on January 25, 2010, Metropolitan- Archbishop Stefan Soroka spoke of how by having the Shroud at the Cathedral, it is an excellent opportunity to reach out to the community, the neighborhood of Philadelphia, the region, and beyond. The Cathedral is a shrine of prayer not just for people of our faith, but for people of all faiths. We are opening our hearts, prayers and the Cathedral not just to visitors from our Church but to others.

Shroud of Turin Exhibition (continued from previous page) The Shroud of Turin is the most analyzed artifact in the world yet remains a mystery. The 14-foot long linen cloth that has been in Turin Italy for over 400 years and bears the faint front and back image of a 5 10" bearded, crucified man with apparent wounds and bloodstains that match the crucifixion account as recorded in the Bible. Millions of people over the centuries have believed it to be the actual burial shroud of Jesus of Nazareth. The historical trail of the Shroud trails back through Italy, France, Asia Minor (modern day Turkey) and may have originated in the Middle East according to botanical evidence. A team of 24 scientists in 1981 concluded that it was not the work of an artist. They found no visible trace of pigment, paint or dye or other artistic substances on the cloth. Other discoveries have defied explanation such as why the image shows up as a positive image in a photographic negative. The image also contains 3-D or distance information indicating the cloth must have wrapped a human form at the time the image was created. The blood is AB positive with human DNA. Skeptics have mounted numerous attempts to show how a medieval artist could have produced the image but all have been inadequate to fully explain how the mysterious image was formed. The image is so superficial it only penetrates the top micro-fibers to the depth of a single bacterium. In addition there is no image under the blood, meaning the blood was on the cloth before the image. No attempt at replicating the image has resolved these two key attributes. If the cloth indeed wrapped a corpse, there are no stains of decomposition. On April 9 & 10, 2010, The Shroud of Turin Mystery Tour will be coming to the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral at 7:00PM. This highly acclaimed multimedia presentation is a production of Shroud of Turin Education Project Inc. and will be presented by Russ Breault,of Peachtree City, Georgia, president and founder. The presentation is a 90 minute fast moving, big screen experience using over 150 images covering all aspects of research. There is limited seating so please contact Archpriest Daniel Troyan at the Shroud office at for more information; or visit our website at At a planning meeting for the Shroud on January 25, 2010, Ken Hutchins talks about advertising for the Exhibition. 2

Sunday of Meatfare The Lord said: When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? The King will reply, I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me. They also will answer, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you? He will reply, I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me. Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life. (Ìt. 25, 31-46) Lord s Second Coming The Lord came to earth physically at His nativity, quietly and without glory. At the Second Coming, He will come from heaven with supernatural wonders and manifest brightness. He will come with His body, so that He will be recognized as the One who has come before and freed the human race, and will come again to judge whether it has wellpreserved what it has been given. No one knows exactly when the Lord s Second Coming will occur. The Lord kept this hidden even from the Apostles, but He did allow for some visible signs to take place in the meantime. Some of the saints have expanded on the description of these signs. In any case, it is said that it will occur after the passage of seven thousand years of human history. Prior to the Lord s reappearance, the Antichrist will come. He will be born, as St. Hippolytus of Rome says, of a defiled woman who will appear to be a virgin and will be from the Jewish race, from the tribe of Dan, one of Jacob s sons. He will live a life imitating that of Christ. He will perform miracles, such as the ones Christ did, and will even raise the dead. Yet, all that he shall do will be an illusion: his birth, his flesh, 4 and so on, as the Apostle Paul says: The coming of the lawless one is according to the works of Satan, with all powers, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved (II Thessalonians 2:9-10). But, as St. John of Damascus says, Satan will not himself be transformed into flesh, but a man born of fornication will accept into himself all the activity of Satan. He will suddenly rise up in rebellion. Then he will appear to be kind and accommodating to all. There will be a great famine and he will supply the people with food. He will study the Holy Scriptures and practice fasting. Forced by the people, he will be proclaimed king. He will greatly love the Jewish race, restore them to Jerusalem, and build their temple. According to the Holy prophet Daniel, seven years before the end, St. Enoch and St. Elijah will come preaching to the people not to accept the Antichrist. He will imprison them, torture them, then behead them. Those people who choose to live (continued on next page)

piously, keeping their true religion, will flee far away. Finding them in the mountains, the Antichrist will tempt them by means of demons, but those seven years will be shortened for the sake of the elect. There will be a great famine, with all the elements undergoing a change, such that almost all living creatures will be obliterated. After this, suddenly, like lightning from heaven, the Lord will appear, preceded by His precious Cross. A boiling river of fire will go before Him, purifying all the earth of its defilements. The Antichrist will immediately be captured, together with those who have server him, and will be delivered to the eternal fire. When the angels have sounded the trumpets, then the entire human race will at once come together from the ends of the earth and from all the elements to Jerusalem for Jerusalem is the center of the center of the world. Here thrones will have been set up for judgment. Yet each person will be with his own body and soul, all of which will have been transfigured and made incorruptible, and all will have one appearance. The elements themselves will have undergone an alteration for the better. Sunday of Meatfare (continued from previous page) With a single word, the Lord will separate the righteous from the sinners. The workers for good will go to receive eternal life and the sinners eternal torment. We ought to know that when He comes again, Christ will not require fasting or miracles, though these are good, but rather works of mercy and compassion, which are far better. According to the Gospel of St. Matthew, both the righteous and the sinners will be judged according to six requirements: giving food to the hungry, providing drink to the thirsty, showing hospitality to the stranger, clothing the naked, visiting the sick, and visiting prisoners. By rendering these acts of compassion to the least of our brothers, we perform them for Christ Himself. Since these six requirements can be carried out by everyone, and where on earth, it can be understood why His judgment shall be a just one. Through this realization that God is manifested in love, every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father. Taken from the Synaxarion of the Lenten Triodion and Pentecostarion 5 Meatfare Sunday ** Things God Won t Ask ** God won t ask what kind of car you drove, but will ask how many people you drove who didn t have transportation.. 10 Cross Valley Ukrainian Catholic Religious Education Program Submitted by Stephen Mykulyn Students, parents, clergy and friends from the Cross Students Sing Carols Valley Ukrainian Catholic Religious Education Program recently celebrated a Holy Supper before taking their winter break. For several weeks prior students made preparations. With the help of the programs coordinator Panni Chris (Christine Mash) students learned carols that they would sing and the supper. A week prior a pyrohial cooking school was conducted with the help of parents and parishioners from the participating communities. Students made pyrohy that were enjoyed by all at the supper. As parents, grandparents and friends worked to set up for the meal students rehearsed their carols one last time. When all preparations were finished the program began with carols in English and Ukrainian. Saint Nicholas arrived with treats for the children and after a few more carols, the didukh was carried in, a blessing was offered and the meal began. Brief lessons on the program and the dishes served were offered throughout the supper. Later that month students visited a local nursing home to offer the gift of carols there. In the week before the Holy Supper, Students made the pyrohy that were enjoyed at the supper. Each got to take home a dozen to show off their handy work. Clergy From Participating Parishes in the Cross Valley Ukrainian Catholic Religious Education program are Father Orest Kunderevych (SS. Peter & Paul, Wilkes Barre and St. Vladimir, Edwardsville), Father John Seniw (St. Nicholas Glen Lyon) and Father Roman Petryshak (Transfiguration, Nanticoke and SS. Peter & Paul, Plymouth). 10 A table was set in the center of the gathering honoring the tradition of setting an extra place for an ancestor. In this case five places were set one for each of the five participating parishes.

The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, in Melrose Park, PA, held a Christmas program and Carols, following the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, January 17. The performance consisted of fifteen enthusiastic and talented children from the parish, and was directed by Lesia Penkalskyj. A Pleasant Christmas Program Those in attendance took pleasure in listening to Boh Predvichniy, accompanied by bass (Rostyk Kuydych), trumpet (Vera Penkalskyj), clarinet (Marta Penkalskyj), flute (Victoria Shust and Irena Kondrat), violin (Andrew Perrong) and cymbals (Markian Shust); Silent Night, sung by the youngest children, and Boh sia Razhdaye, which was accompanied by the guitar (Luka Kuydych and Markian Shust) and rhythm instruments. There was also a solo of the carol Presviata Maria performed by Andrew Perrong, who sang two verses and played two verses on the violin. The carols were performed so well and were so enjoyable, that many of the audience members found themselves singing along. As the parishioners enjoyed coffee and socializing downstairs, the music continued, with Luka Kuydych playing O Holy Night on the piano, and Marianka Klingensmith playing two Christmas Carols on the violin. This is the second year the children of the ABVM were able to share the Christmas spirit with the parish through their talent in music. This year the performers consisted of: Adriana Doyle, Bohdanchyk Doyle, Luka Kuydych, Rostyslaw Kuydych, Irena Kondrat, Natalia Kondrat, Peter Kondrat, Marianka Klingensmith, Marta Penkalskyj, Vera Penkalskyj, Andrew Perrong, Markian Shust, Victoria Shust, Leanna Soltys, and Adia Soltys.
