Remember only the Parma Hospital notifies the clergy of any parishioners admitted and then, only if the parishioner registers as a member of St. Vladimir s. Also, parishioners who would like a home visit are asked to contact the clergy and make their wishes known. Birthday greetings this week go out to Mrs. Dusia Bedik, Ludmilla Pawuk and Mykola Logvynuyk. Mnohaya Lita! Our Senior UOL will hold an evening of Bowling on Saturday, December 29 th following the 5 p.m. Vespers. The event will take place at Spins Bowling Alley in Independence. All are welcome to attend. For more information or to RSVP, please contact Nina Novak. The Parish Family Night will be held this Thursday at 6:00 p.m. This annual event in the parish center is one of faith, fellowship and fun. All ages are welcome and children are encouraged to bring a friend and a board game. If you are able to assist with this event, please contact Mrs. Mary Ann Sklaryk, youth minister.

3 Please note that during the Nativity Lent-Advent, Vespers will be served every Saturday at 5:00 p.m. with confession at 4:45 p.m. During the period of preparation for our Savior s birth, please keep the fast by fasting according to the teachings of the Church, doing works of charity and receiving the Holy Mysteries of Confession and Communion. Throughout the year, our parish s Senior UOL chapter sponsors many activities for the benefit of our parish and youth. For over 30 years, the most commendable project is their sponsorship of the Sviata Vechera (Holy Christmas Eve Supper) on Christmas Eve, January 6 th. This year s dinner will be on Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. When the first UOL Sviata Vechera was served, approximately 30 people participated. Over the years, attendance has grown. The Senior UOL once again invites everyone who is not able to prepare their own Christmas Eve Holy Supper to come to the church hall for Sviata Vechera. If you would like to attend, please make a reservation in advance by calling the clergy or the parish office from Monday thru Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. With the increase in the number of guests, there is also need for additional volunteers. If you can help, your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Every additional hand makes the burden a little lighter. You do not have to be a member of the UOL to volunteer. For more information, contact Mrs. Tamara Host, chairperson. One of the beautiful traditions in our parish is hearing the youth sing and read at the Christmas Eve services. Once again, we request all parents to encourage their children to read on Sunday, January 6 th at 7:00 p.m. Readings may be obtained in either English or Ukrainian by contacting Ms. Melanie Nakonachny. THANK YOU! To all the volunteers who worked so hard in making the hundreds of dozens of pyrohy for the Christmas Holy Days, we sincerely thank you! May our Lord bless you for your love for His Holy Church. Caroling On Sunday, December 30 th, following the Ukrainian Divine Liturgy, our youth will go caroling to local nursing homes. Parents, please encourage your children to participate. Adults are also welcome to be a part of this annual tradition. For more information, contact Fr. John. A beautiful part of our Christmas season is the annual Carol Sing-Along, with readings by our youth. This year, the program will be held on Sunday, January 13 th, between Liturgies. Parents are requested to encourage their children to participate by reading in either English or Ukrainian. To register your children to participate, please contact Pani Matka Anna, Mrs. Natalia B. Mahlay or Mrs. Oksana Logvynyuk. Please Note that, because of the Joy of the Nativity, there is no kneeling during any Christmas services, until after the Liturgy on Theophany, January 19 th. The 2019 boxes of parish weekly donation envelopes are available in the church vestibule. As always, please use them on a regular basis and donate generously toward the financial needs of the parish.

4 Malanka 2019 Our parish s annual Malanka Julian calendar New Year Dinner / Dance will be held on Saturday, January 26 th in our parish center. Music will be provided by Harmonia and Korinya Band from New York. Cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 7:00 p.m. and Zabava (dance) from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. Tickets will be sold only in advance. The cost is $60.00 per person for the dinner & dance and $40.00 for the dance only. To order your tickets, call Mrs. Lucy Komichak (440) Plan to attend and invite your friends to join you! Prayers for Orthodox Chuch in Ukraine Answered On the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord on August 19, 1989, in the city of Lviv, a number of clergy and a few thousand faithful boldly left the Patriarchate of Moscow and declared the formation of the Ukrainian Orthodox Autocephalous Church. This new Church rapidly grew with many priests and parishes leaving the Moscow Patriarchate. Unexpectedly this new Ukrainian Orthodox Church elected our Metropolitan Mystyslav as their first Patriarch. Since 1989 until today much can be written, however last Saturday, December 15 th, I believe the most important event since the Baptism of Kyiv-Rus in 988 AD took place at St. Sophia s Cathedral in Kyiv. On that Saturday in a cold, snow covered city, thousands of people waited outside for the results of the election of the new Metropolitan of Kyiv and all Ukraine following the unified Sobor of 3 Ukrainian Orthodox Churches in Ukraine. The Sobor was called by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. At this Sobor, 3 candidates were nominated to be Metropolitan. Thirty-nine-year-old Metropolitan Epiphane was chosen to lead the new Ukrainian Autocephalous Church. He assumes the title of Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine. He is to travel to Istanbul, Turkey on January 6 th to receive the decree, called the Tomos from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, which will officially sanction the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Autocephaly (from the Greek word: property of being self-headed ) acknowledges independence from all other local churches, including the Patriarchate of Moscow, which does not recognize the canonical nature of Saturday s election. In last Sunday s Plain Dealer a large article by the Associated Press reported on this Sobor. Of special note is Moscow s opposition and reaction by asking the Pope Francis, Germany and The United Nations for assistance in working against this new Church. The day of December 15, 2018 in the life of the Holy Orthodox Church of Ukraine will always be treasured in history as the day when the faithful of the Church, with the blessing of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I and the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, were blessed with the establishment of a Pomisna-Local Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the election of the Primate-Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine in the person of Your Beatitude. We look forward to your service to the Gospel and Body of Christ in God-loving Ukraine, which will be guided by the Holy Spirit and lead to the final ecclesiastic unity in the Holy Orthodox Church of Ukraine. This is a day the Lord has made! It is the day that the hierarchs, clergy and faithful of our Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA have prayed and worked for throughout our 100 year history. Metropolitan John (Theodorovych), our first primate and the only hierarch who survived martyrdom of all the other hierarchs of the first formation of Ukrainian autocephaly (1921) served our Holy Church and the cause of Autocephaly for 50 years. Our second Primate-Metropolitan Mstyslav, from the second formation of autocephaly (1942) served our Holy Church for 43 years. He later became the first Patriarch of Ukraine in the third formation of autocephaly (1990) and never wavered in the struggle for an independent Pomisna Church of Ukraine. Our third Primate-Metropolitan Constantine strove continually throughout his 40 years of service 20 as Metropolitan to our Holy Church for the recognition of Autocephaly for Ukraine. We, as the present hierarchs of the UOC of the USA have worked diligently over the past 24 years ensuring that the question of Autocephaly for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ukraine would never fade away. Our clergy and faithful have never weakened in their faith that this day would come. We rejoice and are glad (Ps. 117:24) in this day and thank God for your election your Beatitude, to the Primacy of the fully autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Glory to God for all things! We all must realize, however, that this is a time in the history of Ukraine and the world that requires gentle healing, firm leadership and great love. Our prayer for you, Your Beatitude, is that you will continue to be graced by God with the gentle healing faith exhibited by the saints of all Rus-Ukraine, that you will be given the strength to exercise firm leadership in the example of the Holy Fathers of the Church and that you will be enabled to unconditionally open yourself in service to the bishops, priests and faithful who are entrusted to your paternal spiritual care. Our Lord will certainly assist you in carrying this heavy burden-responsibility and the powerful prayers of your spiritual children will sustain you always. In behalf of the clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, we express to you our most sincere greetings as you begin this certainly difficult, but spiritually and fundamentally important, mission in the life of the Church. We enthusiastically look forward to our common work with you in brotherly love, peace, and harmony as we seek to fulfill God s Holy Will for all Ukrainian Orthodox Christians. Dear Brother in Christ and co-celebrant in Christ s Vineyard, we pray in the depth of our hearts and souls that the joyful Light of the Bethlehem Star will always lead you to Christ our Lord in all your blessed service in His Name seeking the salvation of souls. We know that alone, human desire is insufficient to fulfill this service to which you have been called. As we have seen throughout the history of mankind, we cannot rely upon the wisdom of mankind as our source of strength. May your real strength come from the Wisdom of God in the Holy Trinity, for He is Good, Compassionate, Merciful, Just and loves us beyond our ability to fully comprehend.
