From 1558 until 1829, Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember. The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ. Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments. Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love. The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John. The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament. The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

3 - 3 - Seven swans a-swimmin represented Pope Francis opened a special Year of Mercy this past Tuesday, December 8, It will continue through November 20, During this time we are asked to think what mercy means and how to be more Year of Mercy Spiritual Works of Mercy the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy and the seven scraments. The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes. Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control. The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments. The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples. The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles Creed. merciful to others. Mercy means to treat others kindly, generously, and to be understanding and forgiving. How do we do that everyday? Here are some ideas. See if you can come up with others. To instruct the ignorant: Help others to understand and learn. To counsel the doubtful: Give good advice to those who are uncertain. To admonish sinners: Help people live in God s love. Be a good example. To bear wrongs patiently: Deal kindly with people who do thoughtless things. To forgive offenses willingly: Forgive people who cause pain, even if they are not sorry! To comfort the suffering: Be with those having a tough time. Don t try to fix their problems. Just love and support them. To pray for the living and the dead: We can always pray and offer our sufferings to lessen the pain of others. Pray for those who have gone before us and are now with the Lord.

4 To feed the hungry and to give drink to the thirsty: Donate food or money to buy food for the hungry. Help at a food pantry. Participate in a food drive. To clothe the naked: Donate clotes that we no longer need or may have outgrown to one of the local shelters. To shelter the homeless: Collect soap, shampoo, deoderant, etc., Just a little reminder to all of us soda-guzzling individuals: When you are finished with the soda can, or other aluminum can (such as V8), please rinse out the can, and put in into a plastic store bag. When you have accumalated a few cans, please bring them to Church. Sandra Berta has been very generous with her time and energy, and picks up these cans. In turn, they are sold, and all the proceeds go to Christmas Confessions will be held on Saturday, December 19, That is the last opportunity for Confessions Corporal Works of Mercy Kanz for Kids 2.0 Christmas Confessions 2015 Parish Dues and donate to a homeless shelter. To visit the sick and those in prison: Visit an elderly neighbor. Make cards for those who are ill in the parish. To bury the dead: Pray for those who have gone before us and are now with the Lord. What other acts of kindness can you think of for those who may need somone to cheer their day? purchasing supplies for the children enrolled in our Religious Education Program. This is a wonderful project, and not exactly a walk in the park. We truly appreciate Sandra s continuing efforts, not only with collecting the cans, but also being completely involved in our Religious Education Program. We thank you Sandra, and thank our Parish Family Members for helping fund our program! before Christmas. There will be several priests hearing Confessions on that Saturday both at 10:30 and at 2:00. With the end of 2015 quickly approaching, we offer this gentle reminder to make sure that your 2015 are paid. Also, we remind our Parish

There is no increased planned for Ukrainian Greek Catholic Bishops To Collect For Church Abroad KYIV-- The Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) has decided to hold a collection, called Andrew s Pence, to support faithful of UGCC abroad where there is no permanent ecclesiastical structure. More than 100 years ago Ukrainians started to leave their native land in search of a better life, material welfare, Mr. PHILIP Duick, of Olyphant, 97 years old and one of the oldest members of our Church, passed away to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 6, Mr. Duick was a life-time member of St. Cyril s, married to the late Julia Elnitsky, and had 4 children: Paul, Julianne, Joanne and Theresa. The viewing will be Sunday, Dec. 13 th from 2:00 St. Cyril s Choir has released their Christmas Album in the CD format. Previously this had only been available as a cassette. The price for the CD is only $ Also released in a new format is the Divine Liturgy of St. John Our Condolences From the Choir... and freedom. Many settled on another continent, where church buildings of the UGCC are not everywhere, so that the faithful could not attend services in their native Church. 7 - 7 - Malanka Meeting Meeting to plan our traditional Ukrainian New Year Dinner Dance - Malanka - will be held at 7:00pm, Monday evening, December 21, 2015 at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, 430 North Seventh Avenue, Scranton. Festival of Christmas Carols The Annual Festival of Christmas Carols will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 3 p.m. at the golden-domed Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia. Choirs from different parishes will participate. Everyone is welcome. Northeastern Pennsylvania s Malanka 2016 Northeastern Pennsylvania s 12 th annual MALANKA is scheduled for Saturday evening, January 16, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 12:30 am at St. Vladimir Parish Center, 728 North Seventh Avenue, Scranton. The festive evening will include a generous Ukrainian and American dinner buffet catered by Paul Wanas of Accentuate Caterers, cash bar, complimentary bubbly toast and dancing to the popular Ukrainian orchestra Fata Morgana.
