Deacon Buffenbarger, and all MEFGOX guests and participants!!! 8th Sunday of Matthew/Mary Magdalene Saint Mary was from Magdala in Galilee on the Sea of Tiberias, and for this was named Magdalene. When the Lord Jesus cast out seven demons from her, from which she had been suffering, she became His faithful and inseparable disciple, following Him and ministering unto Him even to the time of His crucifixion and burial. Then, returning to Jerusalem together with the rest of the Myrrh-bearers, she prepared the fragrant spices for anointing the body of the Lord. And on the Lord's day they came very early to the tomb, even before the Angels appeared declaring the Resurrection of the Lord. When Mary Magdalene saw the stone taken away from the tomb, she ran and proclaimed it to Peter and John. And returning immediately to the tomb and weeping outside, she was deemed worthy to be the first of the Myrrh-bearers to behold the Lord arisen from the dead, and when she fell at His feet, she heard Him say, "Touch Me not." After the Lord's Ascension, nothing certain is known concerning her. Some accounts say that she went to Rome and later returned to Jerusalem, and from there proceeded to Ephesus, where she ended her life, preaching Christ. Although it is sometimes said that Saint Mary Magdalene was the "sinful woman" of the Gospel, this is nowhere stated in the tradition of the Church, in the sacred hymnology, or in the Holy Gospels themselves, which say only that our Lord cast seven demons out of her, not that she was a fallen woman. Hence, as we today observe thy holy remembrance, we receive the loosing of our sins and transgressions through thy holy prayers for us. READER: Brethren, 10 Now I beg you, brethren, through the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to all speak the same thing and that there be no divisions among you. Instead, may you be perfected together in the same mind and opinion. 11 As it is, those who are from Chloe s household have informed me concerning you my brethren, that there are quarrels among you. 12 Now I mean this: that each one of you says, I follow Paul, I follow Apollos, I follow Kephas, or, I follow Christ. 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one should say that I baptized you into my own name. 16 (I also baptized the household of Stephanas; besides them, I do not know whether I baptized any other.) 17 Indeed, Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the Good News not in wisdom of words, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void. MATTHEW 14: Jesus went out and saw that there was a great crowd. He had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15When evening came, his disciples came to him and said, This place is deserted, and the hour is already late. Send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves. 16But Jesus said to them, They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat. 17They replied, We only have here five loaves and two fish! 18Jesus said, Bring them to me. 19Having instructed the crowds to sit down on the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fish. Looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples distributed it to the multitudes. 20And so, everyone ate and was satisfied. His disciples gathered up twelve baskets full of what remained left over from the broken pieces. 21Those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. 22Immediately after this, Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and told them to go ahead of him to the other side, while he would send the crowds away. It will be held at MDSC in Rose City, Michigan on Labor Day Weekend 2018 (August 31 - September 3, 2018). This event is open to all young adults. One aspect that is often overlooked in being a member in good standing is that Orthodox Christians must receive Holy Communion at least once per year to be a member of the Church. We should strive to live in such a way whereas we can receive Holy Communion at every Divine Liturgy we attend. To receive Holy Communion once a year is the minimum requirement. It is far better to do the maximum and eat and drink at every Lord s Supper we attend. If something is preventing us from receiving Holy Communion regularly we should all ask ourselves, What can I do to change that in my life? And then take action.

4 ANNOUNCEMENTS JULY CCM - SKYLINE TIME FOR SOLDIERS SURGEON July CCM - Skyline Time For Soldiers Surgeon will be on Tuesday, July 24, from 5 PM to 9 PM. A percentage of the evening s sales will be donated to Soldiers Surgeon, Inc. which helps veterans, who have been injured during or outside of their service to this country, with non-emergent Orthopedic services. Some of these surgeons attend our own Annunciation church. Please mail or drop off to the Church office no later than Tuesday, July 31, Please with any questions GREEK FESTIVAL RAFFLE TICKETS On July 30th if you sell and turn in $ worth of tickets, you will be eligible for the raffle drawing to win one of four $50.00 gift cards; so hurry get your tickets, fill out your contact information and turn your tickets in. Tickets are to be placed in the blue box in the Community Center! For every $ worth of tickets you turn in you will be eligible for an additional free entry into the drawing. If you are visiting our Parish, please fill out the "Visitor Information Card," located in the Narthex, and hand it to one of the Welcome Committee greeters. You are welcome to come forward to receive a piece of antidoron (blessed bread) at the conclusion of the service and join us in the Memorial Center for our Fellowship Hour following the Divine Liturgy. If you are a newcomer to our Parish, please introduce yourself to our priest. He would be most happy to schedule a time to meet with you and discuss the ministries and fellowship opportunities available within our Parish. For Orthodox Christians GUIDELINES FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION When preparing to receive Holy Communion, please remain quietly in your pews until an Usher/ Parish Council Member directs you to approach from the center aisle. Your prayerful attention helps sustain the solemnity of the Divine Liturgy for those praying the "Prayers of Preparation and following Holy Communion the "Prayers of Thanksgiving. You will find these prayers in the burgundy Divine Liturgy book located in the pew backs. The Prayers of Preparation begin on page 29 and the Prayers of Thanksgiving begin on page 40. Please allow the acolyte to place the Holy Communion Cloth beneath your chin. This ensures that no particle of the Eucharist falls from your lips. Recite your baptismal name aloud; open your mouth wide; and close your mouth as the Communion Spoon enters your mouth. After receiving Holy Communion, blot your lips on the cloth and return to your pew by the side aisles. You will find an acolyte offering you a bowl of antidoron from which you should take a single piece to ensure you consume all traces of Holy Communion. For Non-Orthodox Christians We welcome to our worship those Christians not fully united with us (canonically). It is a consequence of the sad divisions of Christianity that we cannot extend a general invitation to receive Holy Communion. Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the celebrating community signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist and for which we must all pray.
