3 December 2, 2018 From the Desk of the Pastor 28 th Sunday after Pentecost Glory to Jesus Christ! Dear Friends in Christ, On Dec. 6 th we celebrate St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and on Dec. 8 th we will celebrate the Maternity of St. Ann, also known as the Conception of the Theotokos when she was conceived without sin. Sometimes our Orthodox family members and friends will ask why we call Mary Immaculate. Their good and honest questions demand from us clear answers. To answer this question we should share our common roots: the apostolic faith. We, Orthodox and Catholics, must never add to nor subtract from the faith we received from the Apostles. As such, when it comes to questions about Mary we turn to the Fathers of the Church. St. Hippolytus (170AD-235AD) said, Jesus was the ark formed of incorruptible wood. For by this is signified that His tabernacle [Mary] was exempt from defilement and corruption. Also, Patriarch Proclus of Constantinople stated in a homily in the year 446: As He formed her without any stain of her own, so He proceeded from her contracting no stain. For this reason we celebrate this feast. There are some housekeeping matters which I d like to share with you. 1. Next weekend at all Liturgies we will take a special collection for our handicap ramp. I strongly disliked it when I d go to church as a young man and hear sermons on money. Argh! But, the railing isn t free ($3,500) and neither are the bills for boiler repair, heating, lights and cemetery maintenance. To offset the railing expense, I kindly ask you to give 1/3 the cost you pay for your monthly cell phone/cable bill. If you pay the cable company $100, help us out with $ Saturday, December 15 th, 4pm Liturgy will be cancelled. Fr. Jason and Steve Zinski and other singers will be away at Mary Ann Grimm s wedding in Wheeling. There is nobody to sing responses at that time. Apologies for any trouble this may cause. 3. Say a prayer for peace in Ukraine. Russia has taken three ships and holds a number of sailors hostage as of this writing. Imagine the grief to sailors & the families. 4. Say a prayer for Sr. Ilianna Lonchyna. She will take her perpetual vows next Saturday in Ohio with Christ the Bridegroom Monastery! Fr. Jason and family will attend and anyone interested in joining is invited to come along. 5. Please make a point of attending Advent Moleben services every Tuesday, 7pm 6. 4 Events at Holy Trinity St. Philip s Fast (Advent) started November 14 th. This is a time for fasting, prayer and the giving of alms. Throughout Advent, there will be an Emmanuel Moleben at 7pm in our church every Tuesday. Please, see flyer in this bulletin. After each Moleben there will be a talk on various topics. As such, Confessions will start by 6:30pm before the Moleben service. Thank you to Maria and Michael Jula for the REMARKABLE icon they donated in loving memory of their late daughter, Tatyana Helena Jula English and Ukrainian Choir practices will take place on Sundays, Dec. 2, 9, 16 at 10am at the choir loft, between the Liturgies. Kids will have 15 min. singing practice on. 11/25, 12/9 thru 12/23 at 12:30pm. Help needed! Every Thursday we need one person to commit to keeping God s house clean. It is a 90 minute commitment. Lord, what can I do to show my gratitude to you? If you are willing to help, please call the rectory HTUCC s Christmas Angel Project is done! Congratulations to those who took a name tag, and to Mary Ann Davis for organizing this worthy cause! Wrapped presents are due under the tree in the church by Dec. 16 at the latest. Church Railing is complete! Special collection next week at door to off-set cost of railing. The sacristy mini-refrigerator is broken and cannot be repaired. Who is the kind soul that would like to supply the church with a new one? It is important because it is used to store the altar wine and altar bread. Our Parish Youth Group will be preparing sandwiches for the homeless & less fortunate on Friday, Dec.14 th at 6pm in the church hall. They will deliver these sandwiches to Pittsburgh s Hill District on Sat. Dec 15 th. The total cost of this project is approximately $300. If you would like to support the Youth Group with this project in any way, contact Salvador at or htuccym@gmail.com.

5 Holy Trinity bread will be ready for Christmas. The last day to order is December 14 th. Pick up will be on Monday, December 17 th. If you forget to pick up your order and do not make further arrangements, it will be sold. Nut rolls for Christmas are available at $15 each. University of Pittsburgh Nationality Rooms Holiday Open House is held today on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at the Cathedral of Learning. The theme is Christmas Eve Table - Sviaty Vechir - Hours are 12:00pm to 4:00pm - Admission is free - Soyuz Ukrainok Board Members will be decorating the Ukrainian Nationality Room. There will be Ukrainian kanapky and homemade pastries for sale in the Commons Room. The week has its beginning in the creation of the world and its culmination in the glorious second coming of Christ.
