1 December 17, 2017 Dear Friends in Christ From the Desk of the Pastor Sunday of the Forefathers I wish to continue today with my message from last Sunday about the meaning behind some of the cultural expressions of Christmas this time of year. As our society becomes increasingly paganized, people become increasingly ignorant of the meaning behind these rich symbols. One such cultural relic we all know and love is the Christmas Carol, "THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS." Let us take a closer look at this carol, which many believe to be an underground catechism. Although there is some disputation as to the real origin of this carol, I tend to support the view that it was an underground catechism device used to pass the faith on during time of persecution. I wish to give credit to Fr. Hal Stockert for arranging this and publishing it. Catholics in England during the period 1558 to 1829, when Parliament finally emancipated Catholics in England, were prohibited from ANY practice of their faith by law - private OR public. It was a crime to BE a Catholic. "The Twelve Days of Christmas" was written in England as one of the "catechism songs" to help young Catholics learn the tenets of their faith - a memory aid, when to be caught with anything in *writing* indicating adherence to the Catholic faith could not only get you imprisoned, it could get you hanged, or drawn and quartered, a rather peculiar and ghastly punishment I'm not aware was ever practiced anywhere else. The practice of drawing and quartering a victim consisted of tying a criminal (in this case a Catholic) to four large farm horses, and then driving the horses in opposing directions thus tearing the victim into five parts - four limbs and the remaining torso. Imagine how great their love of the true faith was, that they would endure that torture rather than change their religion! Think of this the next time the devil tempts you to sleep in on Sunday! The gifts in the carol are hidden meanings to the teachings of the faith. The "true love" mentioned in the song doesn't refer to an earthly suitor, it refers to God Himself. The "me" who receives the presents refers to every baptized person. The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge which feigns injury to decoy predators from her helpless nestlings, much in memory of the expression of Christ's sadness over the fate of Jerusalem: "Jerusalem! Jerusalem! How often would I have sheltered thee under my wings, as a hen does her chicks, but thou wouldst not have it so..."
2 1 Partridge in a pear tree = The One true God revealed in the person of Jesus Christ 2 Turtle Doves = The Old and New Testaments 3 French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity, the Theological Virtues 4 Calling Birds = the Four Gospels and/or the Four Evangelists 5 Golden Rings = The first Five Books of the Old Testament, the "Pentateuch", which gives the history of man's fall from grace. 6 Geese A-laying = the six days of creation 7 Swans A-swimming = the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, the seven sacraments 8 Maids A-milking = the eight beatitudes 9 Ladies Dancing = the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit 10 Lords A-leaping = the Ten Commandments 11 Pipers Piping = the eleven faithful apostles 12 Drummers Drumming = the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle's Creed In Christ, Jason, priest and sinner
3 New Things Happening at Holy Trinity Confessions on Wednesday this week: from 6-8pm. Fr. Alex Wroblicky will hear confessions The Kitchen Donations have reached $25,375. We would like to thank Victor Tonas for his recent donation. Attention: Parents and children of our CCD: There will be no CCD classes on Dec. 24 th and Dec. 31 st. Classes will resume on January 7 th. Mary Ann Davis would like to give a huge Thank you to all of the parishioners who participated in the Angel Tree Project this year. The generosity was overwhelming! And this year the Salvation Army experienced a shortage in coats, gifts etc. and had to turn people away until they received all the items from our church. They were able to call back those people and provide the necessary items they needed. Feel extra good this Christmas-you made a big difference in your community! Stephanie Fedora would like to offer many thanks to all of the hard working, never ceasing, fun loving pyrohi workers who worked tirelessly, and with light hearts and positive spirits! Our workers are made up of parishioners and community friends that will always share a bond of friendship. The Pyrohi Project is a huge undertaking and each year we seem to outperform the prior year, and each year I am more and more grateful to be able to work with such a fine group of people! The Christmas Pastoral letter of His Beatitude Sviatoslav is available on our Eparchial website ( and in printed form (English and Ukrainian) in our church vestibule.
