3 June 10 th, 2018 From the Desk of the Pastor 3 rd Sunday after Pentecost Glory to Jesus Christ! Dear Friends in Christ, Not including St. Josaphat, can you name a Saint or Blessed from our Greek Catholic church? (Aside from your parents and grandparents!) Allow me to share with you some information about Blessed Mykola Charnetsky, my favorite among the Blessed martyrs of our church. His picture is on the cover of today s bulletin and his feast day is coming up soon, on June 27 th. What set him apart from so many was his deeply pious soul, his keen intellect and his humility. From the time he was a child, the eldest of nine, he wanted to be a priest and this thought was constantly near him. Nobody was surprised when upon completion of high school he was sent by his bishop to study in Rome for the priesthood, where he eventually earned a doctorate in Dogmatics and afterwards returned to teach at our seminary in Ivano-Frankivsk. His humility was legendary. For example, despite his status as a professor with a Ph.D., he nevertheless gave up his high position and joined the Redemptorist religious order as a postulant. This required no small amount of humility because it involved doing menial tasks and being on even-footing with young men straight out of high school. He loved working with Orthodox and Catholics; his life was poured out trying to bring the two together. He was ordained a bishop in Rome in 1931 by Archbishop Hryhory Khomyshyn. He was arrested by the godless Soviets in 1946, underwent grueling interrogations and tortures, before finally being sent to Siberia for 11 years where his health was compromised through the harsh labor conditions. Many people sought him out for the Mystery of Holy Repentance, as he was a gentle and good confessor. He was released from Siberia and shortly thereafter died in Lviv in 1959, but not before secretly ordaining men to the Holy Priesthood. When I lived in Lviv, Ukraine in the late 1990 s it was a fact of life that large numbers of people came to his grave to pray over his remains, ask for his intercession, take the dirt from his gravesite home as a relic. Many miracles are attributed to him. But, none so great as the seed of faith his holy example planted in the lives of tens of thousands of people. In Christ, Jason, priest and sinner

Clarifications: Under Income section, Investment Other, this refers to CDs which we had at PNC and which we then transferred out to a broker for a better yield. Also, Secretary expense does not refer to Halyna Charron (who volunteers as parish secretary and does not do it for any pay) but refers to office help we received from Nate in our Evangelization planning. Thank you to our pyrohi group for purchasing a new freezer for downstairs. A point of clarification: When the diocese of Pittsburgh announced its reorganization it was reported that I (Fr. Jason) would be residing in West Mifflin. This is an error. During the weekdays I ll assist as chaplain at Jefferson Memorial, but I m your pastor here and there is no change in that regard (please, God!) Our next festival meeting will be on Saturday June 23 after 4 p.m. Liturgy in the church hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. We are now accepting donations of soft drinks for the festival. We would like to keep the variety limited to make selling easier for our volunteers. So please donate Coke products: regular, diet or Sprite in (355ml) cans and water in 500 ml plastic bottles. Drinks can be dropped off at the rectory or church hall. St. Josaphat Society is offering scholarship to the graduating students. If you are interested, please or call the rectory to obtain application form. Deadline is July 14. Father s Day is Sunday June 17 th. The envelopes for the Father s Day Liturgy are on the side entrance and in the back of the church. The names will be listed in the bulletin. June 24 th we will hold a special collection for building maintenance. Each family is asked to be generous. What is generous? Well, give in the measure you wish God to bless you!

5 Events at Holy Trinity We have received a lovely letter of gratitude from Fr. Stepan Sus in Ukraine, thanking our parish for sending him $800 to help the orphans, widows and wounded who are suffering from the war in Ukraine. 5% of our parish collection during the Sundays of Lent was sent directly to help these people in dire need of assistance. See letter (in Ukrainian ori,ginal) in the vestibule. For the Parish Festival we are asking for auction items, monetary donations or gift cards. If you happen to have a gift card you will never use, please donate it to the festival. All donations will be listed in the bulletin. Please submit your donation by July 31, Please call Mary Sembrat at or Mary Ann Davis at with any questions. Consider also asking your employer to sponsor our festival. July 21 will be a parish movie night in the church hall and blessing of the kitchen plaque. Come on out! Details to follow! Prayer and Educational Events in Our Eparchy Evangelization Conference to be held June 9 th in the Cleveland area. Parish representatives are Lou Milano (who attends 11am), Jillian Lukac (who attends 11am) Nick Spak. Events in Our Ukrainian Community The Ukrainian Technological Society (UTS) online scholarship application for fall of 2018 scholarships, is now accessible. Current high school seniors or college students, log into then select scholarship application, and then follow the directions. Applications must be made online or postmarked, by July 5. The Ukrainian Technological Society is now accepting nominations for our 2018 Ukrainian of the Year. The qualifying factors are: professional accomplishments, humanitarian efforts, and contributions to Ukrainian arts and culture. Your nominee s accomplishments could be within the local, national, OR international realm. Your candidate must commit to attending our Ukrainian of the Year dinner dance on November 3rd, if chosen.
