3 November 25 th, 2018 From the Desk of the Pastor 27 th Sunday after Pentecost Glory to Jesus Christ! Dear Friends in Christ, This is a day of great joy for our church! Today, at the Sat. 4pm Liturgy, we have the singular privilege of welcoming Jordan Sanders into the household of God through the rebirth that is Holy Baptism. We have the further honor of announcing that he is taking as his baptismal name Nathan in honor of his grandfather, Nathan Sgro. Baptism is both death and life. It is death because as St. Paul tells us, Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life (Rom 6:3-4). Our old life, the life of the flesh, the life of the lower order, is put into the deep of the waters to be washed away by the quick and living waters of baptism. What arises from those waters is a man who lives according to the higher order. Before bread can be made, wheat must first die to its lower order of life on a stalk. Only then can it become flour then bread. The same is true for a child in the womb. Before the child can live in this world, it must forego life in its old form in the womb, and thus undergo a form of death. We see death in nature when we observe a caterpillar disappear into a cocoon, yet after some time it emerges from that death as a majestic butterfly! Jesus our Lord spoke of this need to be reborn. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:3). Coming before the baptismal font today is a man in the natural order who at birth was given the name Jordan. Yet, emerging from these very waters, as Christ from the Jordan River, he will assume a new mission and will live according to the supernatural order. God uses the visible and ordinary (water) to accomplish something invisible and extraordinary: new birth. At birth, a child is given a name. So, too, when a man is called by God he is given a new name. Think of Abraham, Jacob, Peter and Paul. At baptism our name reflects our new mission and the new virtues of holy people we wish to imitate. My hope is that Nathan Jordan Sanders will be as much of an asset to our parish community as the old Nathan Sgro was so many years ago when he helped Msgr. Russell Danylchuk. Holy Prophet Nathan, who anointed Kings and proclaimed Truth, pray for him! In Christ, Jason, sinner and priest

7 Sunday Gospel Reading (Luke 13: 10-17) Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath 10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, Woman, you are set free from your infirmity. 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God. 14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath. 15 The Lord answered him, You hypocrites! Doesn t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her? 17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.

This expectation of the Messiah and the drawing near to him are fulfilled in the person of the Virgin Mary from Nazareth. Before all ages she was chosen by God. Mary, who in accordance with Tradition was introduced into the temple as a young child, spiritually grew into the handmaid of the Lord. God progressively prepared her to become the womb, the ark, the temple, and the dwelling place for the uncontainable God. By the good will of God the Father, the Most Holy Spirit prepared a dwelling-place in her for God the Word. Mary became the tabernacle in which the Word of God came to dwell in the fullness of time: The Word became flesh and lived among us ( Jn.1:14). In celebrating the Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple in Jerusalem (November 21/December 4), Christians are called to follow her example, allowing the Lord to prepare them so that they may worthily receive God incarnate into the tabernacles of their hearts.
