1 September 24, 2017 Dear Friends in Christ: 16 th Sunday After Pentecost From the Desk of the Pastor I can t stop thinking about it! Have you ever had that? No matter what you do to try and clear your head of something, it persistently returns. For me, it is the thought of Mary, the Mother of God, and all she continues to do for us (her spiritual children) as we approach the 100 th anniversary of her apparitions in Fatima, Portugal. I ve written about this a couple times in this space within the past year already. We need to take her warnings to heart: prayer and penance. Then, the world will be set right, but not without that. One of the reasons this is so important is because it shows us what God has planned for us after this earthly life is over. We will not be couch potatoes lounging around in heaven on sofas with hooka pipes all the while watching chubby cherubim darting through the clouds. If we take our lead from the Mother of God, we ll continue our eternity doing good, only on a much greater scale and with greater powers. (2 Tim. 2:12 we ll reign with him. ). Think about it: the Holy Theotokos spends her eternity coming to help us here on earth, visiting us with words of encouragement and admonitions of grave warning, showing us foretastes of what awaits us if we turn from God and what awaits us if we love Him starting now. She backs this up with prodigious signs in the heavens and accompanied by myriad hosts of angels. All of this still amazes me. To take a crass example, how many of us would go back to our old high school building (if it hasn t already been bulldozed, as mine has) and spend our free time warning the kids about the dangers ahead on the path of life and also encouraging them with helpful bits of advice? Not many of us. However, that is what Mary does for us. Having graduated from the swamp of sin in this world she could forget about our troubles and enjoy bliss without end, and nobody would complain. Yet, she who is called Mother of Christians spends her eternity laboring for our souls that we may be united to the Holy Trinity. In Revelation 12:1-6 we read about the Woman Clothed with the Sun, and this has many layers of meaning. It is Israel, the Church and the Virgin Mary all at once. She hides her child from the evil serpent and seeks to protect him. As we go through very trying times in the world with recent natural disasters, crazy dictators trying to acquire nuclear bombs, people falling away from the faith, we need to return to the simple faith of the early Christians who had a love for Jesus and sought protection under Mary s heavenly watch with this most ancient prayer: Beneath thy tenderness of heart / we take refuge, O Theotokos, / disdain not our supplications in our necessity, / but deliver us from perils, / O only pure and blessed one. In Christ, Jason, priest and sinner
