3 SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS (Holy David, Joseph, and James) (Scriptural text below taken from United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) EPISTLE: GALATIANS 1:11-19 Now I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel preached by me is not of human origin. For I did not receive it from a human being, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you heard of my former way of life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it, and progressed in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my race, since I was even more a zealot for my ancestral traditions. But when [God], who from my mother s womb had set me apart and called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him to the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; rather, I went into Arabia and then returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to confer with Cephas and remained with him for fifteen days. But I did not see any other of the apostles, only James the brother of the Lord. GOSPEL: MATTHEW 2:13-23 When they had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him. Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, Out of Egypt I called my son. When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became furious. He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi. Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet: A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be consoled, since they were no more. When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child s life are dead. He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go back there. And because he had been warned in a dream, he departed for the region of Galilee. He went and dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, He shall be called a Nazorean.

6 Save some appetite and Christmas cheer for after Divine Liturgy today! We look forward to sharing Yuletide joy amongst us today after Divine Liturgy at the parish hall! Thanks to those parishioners who help with set-up before and cleaning after our Pot Luck Sunday events! NEWS WE CAN USE IN THE NEW YEAR Firstly, our parish offices will be closed on January 1 for New Year s Day. Next, as of January 1, 2019, Divine Liturgies on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays shall commence at 9 a.m., instead of 8 a.m. Our Friday liturgies will keep starting at 9 a.m. Also, please be reminded that intentions neither will be taken for Divine Liturgies on days of precept such as Christmas nor on Solemn Holy Days. Kindly consult your 2019 calendar for the days of precept and also the days marked SOLEMN. Indeed, between the Saturday Vigil Liturgy and the Sunday Divine Liturgy, one or the other is to be offered pro populo, or as we have described it, for the sanctification and well-being of our parishioners. However, the intention of the remaining liturgy of the two may be available for reservation as are the liturgies on weekdays. Indeed, the Liturgy Intention Book for 2019 is open and ready for your intentions! Kindly call the Parish Office at 602/ to reserve a Liturgy, whether for the living or the dead or for any other appropriate intention. Finally, on the listing of people to pray for in our bulletin under the categories Special Intentions, Eternal Memory, and May the Lord rest His healing hand, we will announce names for up to four consecutive weeks at a time. If someone wishes to maintain a name after the fourth week, then kindly and timely ask Fr. Diodoro for more time. Otherwise, the name will be set aside to make way for other people and their desire to have us pray for their loved ones by name. A GREAT option for our men in Feb. 2019: Catholic Men s Fellowship Conference On February 2nd, the Catholic men of Phoenix can take part in another fine day of inspiration and support, thanks to the Catholic Men s Fellowship. The theme is A New Knighthood, inspired by Archbishop Chaput s challenge and call to the men gathered in Phoenix last year. Already several men from our parish are looking to go! 7 Good for guys throughout the year: Taking part in our Men s Group Our Men s Group will meet anew on Tuesday, January 8th, starting with Vespers at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral (to which everyone is welcome) and followed by the group meeting in the Rectory.
