No cross the person is alive. Reflection In the desert, our treasure may disappear for a while. A change had to happen. We bid farewell to our old self, but the destination is not clear. How can we leave behind the familiar and survive the journey into the unknown? On all sides are sounds of danger. Each day takes courage. Exhausted, we cry for help. Scripture says that our true treasure comes from above. We seek it but do not earn it. Our greatness lies in welcoming the gifts of faith, family, friends, work, and world. Like the morning dew, a new self is given, not picked off a rack. What a surprise to live without fear. This risk is worth taking.

Purple Heart Day on August 7 commemorates the creation of the oldest American military decoration for military merit, the Purple Heart honors the men and women who are of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. 7 Bereavement Ministry To comfort those who mourn... Our Sacred Heart & St. Gerard Bereavement Ministry provides a variety of services to the members of our parish who are grieving at the loss of a loved one. What we do: = Meet with families to plan funeral services = Host, cook or serve at receptions after funerals. = Help people / Pre-plan their own funeral services. = Offer support for the bereaved. = Plan the annual Mass of Remembrance. Contact Ella at the Parish Office (386) St. Vincent de Paul Quarterly Snapshot During the period April-June 2018, we spent more than we received. Income from begging and other donations totaled $12,926. Outlay for those we serve was $14,149 and operating expenses were $1520. We delivered food to 572 households comprised of 1536 persons at a cost of $7,932. Food is delivered Monday through Friday - three bags approximately 45 lbs. of food per delivery. Food pickups are offered on Saturday mornings. St. Vincent de Paul is the only local charity that routinely delivers to the home thus aiding the disabled and those without transportation. Statistics from 2 nd Harvest Food Bank show food insecurity in central Florida burdens 15.2% of the population --people lack access to or funds for food and rely on help from agencies and public charities. Huge cuts to the food stamp program (SNAP) would result in 11 million meals disappearing every year from central Florida. Utility assistance to 47 households amounted to $4,806. Transportation, emergency lodging, medical items and miscellaneous services were provided to 71 households at a cost of $1,411.The Lord hears the cry of the poor. You are His instruments. Should you yes, you-- be feeling a nudge to help with one of the chores begging, buying, stocking, bagging, delivering, answering phones, data entry, etc., come to a Tuesday meeting.

8 Transfiguration of the Lord August 6, 2018 The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord recalls the Revelation of Christ's Glory on Mount Tabor in the presence of three of His disciples, Peter, James, and John. Christ was transfigured before their eyes, shining with divine light, and He was joined by Moses and Elijah, representing the Old Testament Law and the prophets. Many Christian traditions, including the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Anglican churches, commemorate the event in the Feast of the Transfiguration, a major festival. Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross Saint of the Day for August 9 A brilliant philosopher who stopped believing in God when she was 14, Edith Stein was so captivated by reading the autobiography of Teresa of Avila that she began a spiritual journey that led to her baptism in Twelve years later she imitated Saint Teresa by becoming a Carmelite, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Born into a prominent Jewish family in Breslau, Germany now Wroclaw, Poland Edith abandoned Judaism in her teens. As a student at the University of Göttingen, she became fascinated by phenomenology, an approach to philosophy. Excelling as a protégé of Edmund Husserl, one of the leading phenomenologists, Edith earned a doctorate in philosophy in She continued as a university teacher until 1922 when she moved to a Dominican school in Speyer; her appointment as lecturer at the Educational Institute of Munich ended under pressure from the Nazis. After living for four years in the Cologne Carmel, Sister Teresa Benedicta moved to the Carmelite monastery in Echt, Netherlands, in The Nazis occupied that country in In retaliation for being denounced by the Dutch bishops, the Nazis arrested all Dutch Jews who had become Christians. Teresa Benedicta and her sister Rosa, also a Catholic, died in a gas chamber in Auschwitz on August 9, Congratulations Deacon Tom & Phyllis Murray On 60 Years of Marriage On Saturday July 14 Deacon Tom and Phyllis Murray celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary with a Mass at St. Gerard s followed by a dinner in the Gathering Place with their family in attendance. They would like to pass along the following: We are feeling grateful for this occasion and the simple joys of spending it together. We enjoy God's gift of new life all around us and we treasure the gifts God gives us in each of you. With all that we have to be thankful for, it's no wonder we can't help smiling. They would also like to share the following homily given by Fr. George with all of you because it represents their life together. When we are sick we go to a hospital. We meet the doctor. Hopefully He will restore us to normal health. And if we feel weak He will help us to regain our strength. Therefore, we place our total trust in the doctor. Why was a hospital mentioned? Pope Francis, reflecting on the scripture passage Matthew 9:10-13 says The Church is a hospital. Yes, we can be spiritually sick. In some area of our lives, we can be giving in to our selfish inclinations. Again, we are in constant need of strength in order to live a good Christian Life. Yes, to live a good Christian life is not easy. St. Paul says it is a constant warfare between the forces of good and evil. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Jesus Himself says, If you wish to be my disciple then take up your cross daily and follow me. Yes, each of one of us is in need of a doctor. Jesus is the Doctor, The Great Healer. All that you and I have to do is to place our trust in the Doctor, who is Jesus Himself. Jesus says, I have come to heal the sick. Remember, Jesus always extends his invitation to each one of us. He says, Come to me all you who labor and are burdened and I will refresh you and give you rest. Amen If you have any questions, please ask Phyllis. She will be more than happy to answer them. 10 ALUMINUM POP TAB COLLECTION The POP TAB collection period for is in full swing, and I reach out again to all of you who savor that special libation, that sports an aluminum POP TAB, to please save it for the Ronald McDonald houses in Orlando. They depend greatly on these yearly collections, donated by the schools participating in their program. These collections help offset the cost to shelter, comfort and care for the families as they wait for their child to be cared for. Our collection of POP TABS, combined with the POP TABS collected by the families and friends of Chisholm Elementary School in NSB, weighed-in at 122 lbs this past collection period. That s a lot of POP TABS. There s a picture of the POP TAB collection on the bulletin board in the vestibule at St. Gerard. Check it out! Thank you again and God Bless. WE NEED YOUR HELP... To each person the manifestation of the spirit is given for the common good. Every person is called to contribute to the liturgy in a manner suited to his or her unique talents. It takes the help of many people serving in a variety of different liturgical ministries to help the liturgy flow smoothly and enable the participation of the assembly. At the present time, there is a serious need for volunteers in all ministries at St. Gerard s. We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the gifts God has given you and consider volunteering your talents for one of our ministries. Training: Training is provided to help you get started in all the listed ministries. Scheduling: Liturgical ministers are scheduled at the Mass time of their preference as often as fits their schedule and are asked to arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled Mass begins.
