4 Ministry News Feast of Our Mother of Perpetual Help June 27th.We celebrate the feast in honor of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, especially reverenced by the Redemptorists. Since 1866 the Redemptorists have spread devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the icon and title of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help). According to tradition, the ancient Byzantine icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help was stolen from a church in Crete, where many miracles had occurred. The image remained in the private possession of a Roman merchant and his family until 1499, when it was publicly displayed in the Church of St. Matthew in Rome between the Basilicas of St. Mary Major and St. John Lateran. When St. Matthew s was destroyed in 1789, the icon was rescued and hung in an obscure monastery chapel until the Redemptorists learned that the site of their new headquarters in Rome had once been the site of St. Matthew s, the one-time home of a miraculous icon of Our Lady. A Redemptorist priest who as a young man had frequented the monastery chapel that displayed the icon informed his brothers where to find the image. The Redemptorists asked Pope Pius IX for permission to move the icon to their new church, San Alfonso, which was built on the location of the icon s earlier home. The pope granted his permission and told the Redemptorists to make her known throughout the world. 6 ALUMINUM POP TAB COLLECTION The POP TAB collection period for is in full swing, and I reach out again to all of you who savor that special libation, that sports an aluminum POP TAB, to please save it for the Ronald McDonald houses in Orlando. They depend greatly on these yearly collections, donated by the schools participating in their program. These collections help offset the cost to shelter, comfort and care for the families as they wait for their child to be cared for. Our collection of POP TABS, combined with the POP TABS collected by the families and friends of Chisholm Elementary School in NSB, weighed-in at 122 lbs this past collection period. That s a lot of POP TABS. There s a picture of the POP TAB collection on the bulletin board in the vestibule at St. Gerard, check it out. Thank you again and God Bless. WE NEED YOUR HELP... VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MINISTRIES AT ST. GERARD S There are different gifts but the same Spirit, there are different ministries but the same Lord... To each person the manifestation of the spirit is given for the common good. Every person is called to contribute to the liturgy in a manner suited to his or her unique talents. It takes the help of many people serving in a variety of different liturgical ministries to help the liturgy flow smoothly and enable the participation of the assembly. At the present time, there is a serious need for volunteers in all ministries at St. Gerard s. We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the gifts God has given you and consider volunteering your talents for one of our ministries. Training: Training is provided to help you get started in all the listed ministries. Scheduling: Liturgical ministers are scheduled at the Mass time of their preference as often as fits their schedule and are asked to arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled Mass begins.
