4 Safety Patrols set good example and faithful citizenship Written by Jackson C., Grade 7 Sacred Heart School, NSB Safety patrol is one of the most important jobs you can have at Sacred Heart Catholic School in New Smyrna. I am a proud safety patrol and I am assigned morning drop off Monday thru Friday. I need to be on post by 7:30 am and I truly look forward to open the doors of students being dropped off. I am supposed to say good morning and have a nice day. I feel like families who see me are happy that our school sets their morning right by showing them positivity and a welcoming environment. This is my favorite of my two posts because I like seeing the little kids. My afternoon post is runner. Our school hallway is bustling with sounds from walkie talkies and centralized sound system. There are many runners during dismissal because we have to make sure traffic at dismissal runs smoothly. It is also very important that we watch who is picked up and where the students have to go as we have three exits to watch. I usually stand near the classroom door I am assigned in. However, not everyone is accepted to be safety patrol. We have to apply for membership and get recommendations from teachers who know us well. We also have certain rules to follow such as wearing a neon yellow safety belt, being on time, performing our duties respectfully and faithfully, and always setting a good example. There is a lot of jobs a safety patrol can be put on. Some get one, some get two jobs. We also have to fill in for anyone who is sick. We have to attend regular meetings to talk about how we can improve and discuss how we can resolve some of the challenges we face on a daily basis. At Sacred Heart, we have leadership positions such as Captain who monitors assigned posts and other patrols. If you are good at your job and you are in eight grade, you can be a Captain. I will be in eight grade next year and I hope that I have done a good enough job and showed responsibility that I will be Captain. 5 Alexander Brock received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, March 24th in the 4:00 pm Mass. Catching the flu on his confirmation day in February, Alex was not able to come to Church and receive the Sacrament. When Bishop Noonan was informed about his condition, the bishop gave Fr. Tom a special authority to confirm Alex. Alex chose St. Francis as his saint and was very happy that he finally received the Sacrament. Congratulations Alex! The Easter Egg Hunt after the 9:00am Mass on Easter Sunday was enjoyed by many children. Thanks to all that helped make Sacred Heart children s Easter egg hunt so memorable. The Annunciation of the Lord - April 9th Celebrates the angel Gabriel's appearance to the Virgin Mary, announcing that she had been chosen to be the Mother of Our Lord. When is the Annunciation? How Is the Date of the Feast of the Annunciation Determined? The Annunciation always falls on March 25, exactly nine months before the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas. However, the celebration of the feast is transferred to a different date if it falls on a Sunday of Lent, during Holy Week, or during the octave of Easter. The Church considers Masses for the Sundays of Lent, any time in Holy Week, and any time from Easter through the Sunday after Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday) to be so important that even this Marian feast cannot replace one of them. So, when the Annunciation falls on a Sunday in Lent (before Palm Sunday), it is transferred to the following Monday. If it falls on Palm Sunday or on any day in Holy Week, it is transferred to Low Monday, the Monday after the Sunday after Easter.

Propagation of the Faith- We are called to share our faith and the hope of eternal life. Helena Moniz from the Office of the Propagation of the Faith, from the Diocese of Charleston will speak at Sacred Heart Church on the on the weekend of April 28/29 seeking support for the work being done in Fiji. The Fiji nation is a group of islands in Melanesia in the South Pacific about 1,100 nautical miles northeast of New Zealand. Fiji was a British colony until Originally called the Cannibal Isles, the islands were Christianized by the Methodists and later by the Marist order of priests. We are in need of your prayers and financial support. 10 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MINISTRIES AT ST. GERARD S There are different gifts but the same Spirit, there are different ministries but the same Lord... To each person the manifestation of the spirit is given for the common good. WE NEED YOUR HELP... To keep the Sacred Heart & St. Gerard roster up to date- In order to better serve our parish we strive to maintain a church roster that is as accurate as possible. We ask that our registered parishioners call the parish office at to inform us when changes to your information occur including name, address, telephone number, a move out of the parish, the death of a family member who is a registered parishioner, etc. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Every person is called to contribute to the liturgy in a manner suited to his or her unique talents. It takes the help of many people serving in a variety of different liturgical ministries to help the liturgy flow smoothly and enable the participation of the assembly. At the present time, there is a serious need for volunteers in all ministries at St. Gerard s. We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the gifts God has given you and consider volunteering your talents for one of our ministries. Training: Training is provided to help you get started in all the listed ministries. Scheduling: Liturgical ministers are scheduled at the Mass time of their preference as often as fits their schedule and are asked to arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled Mass begins.
