In 1732, when St. Alphonsus founded the Redemptorist Fathers and Brothers, he placed the community under the care and protection of Our Blessed Lady. He wrote the Rule of Life for Redemptorists that they were to have an extraordinary love for the Mother of God and they must promote love and devotion to her among the people to whom they minister. This is why Tuesday Devotions are held after the 11am Mass and again at 7pm. How much time do you spend in the evening looking at TV hours go by and often you are bored and even annoyed at the programs. Come and be refreshed and strengthened and blessed by prayers to Our Lady; a short sermon and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Surely there must be some intention, some need, some blessing that you stand in need of. Place it in the hands of Our Blessed Lady. Never was it known that anyone who fled to her protection or sought her intercession was left unided. Throw off strife, he tells us, and put on joy. Like a favorite old sweatshirt, joy fits, and how warm it keeps us, even when the winds blow cold. Paul knows of this joy as he pens his letter to the Philippians, praying that they may grow in their ability to discern what is righteous and good. And Luke speaks to us of John, who was foretold by Isaiah and who sings a similar song Prepare the way of the Lord, for salvation is at hand. A man ahead of his time, Baruch spent his days joyfully awaiting a distant glory. On this Second Sunday of Advent, Paul and John know that this glory is upon us. 4 Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Holy Day of Obligation Sacred Heart Mass Schedule Monday December 7 Vigil Mass is at 7:00pm Tuesday December 8 7:00am, 9:00am & 11:00am St. Gerard Mass Schedule Tuesday December 8 9:00am St. Ambrose Have you ever been asked to do something you weren't sure you could do? This happened to Saint Ambrose. The new bishop of Milan was to be elected by the people. Ambrose, who was governor, attended the election for two reasons. He knew there might be disagreements and felt responsible for keeping the peace. Since Ambrose was preparing for Baptism, he was also interested in who would be bishop. During the election, fighting broke out. No one could agree on who the bishop should be. Ambrose stood and pleaded for peace in the assembly. During his speech a voice cried out, Ambrose for bishop! Ambrose was shocked. The crowd took up the cry, shouting, Ambrose for bishop! Ambrose begged them not to elect him, but he could not silence them. Over the next several months, Ambrose was baptized, ordained, and consecrated bishop. Ambrose was well prepared for the office of bishop. He came from a wealthy Roman family. His father was a chief officer in the Roman military. Not only had Ambrose received the finest education in Rome, he had been raised in a good Christian household. His sister became a nun. Ambrose had followed in his father's footsteps when he entered political life. In 370 he became governor, with his headquarters in Milan, Italy. Ambrose administered strict and fair justice. He was a courageous leader. He was also strong in his Christian faith and prepared to be baptized as an adult. After his election as bishop, Ambrose turned his attention from political government to church government. Immediately he gave a share of his family's money to the poor and encouraged others to do so. He simplified the bishop's household and freed the place of expensive finery. He took a firm stand in controversial matters of Church and state. When conflicts arose with the ruling family, Ambrose told the people, The emperor is in the Church, not above it. Even the rulers must obey the laws of God. On more than one occasion, Empress Justina sent soldiers to force Ambrose to go along with her wishes. Ambrose had to defend his cathedral against attack, but the people stood by their bishop, and the army had to back down. Later Emperor Theodosius, to get revenge for the murder of several officers, had a town of 7,000 people destroyed. Ambrose warned Theodosius that he would be excommunicated if he did not do public penance. People were astounded that Ambrose would do this. They were speechless when Theodosius knelt at Ambrose's feet, humbly accepting forgiveness. St. Ambrose Feast Day is December 7th. Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School and St. Gerard Mission 4

Advent is a time of expectation, of looking forward to our Saviors birth. Because of this, it has been customary to scale down the music a bit in order to heighten the sense of looking forward to the joy of Christmas. We will use this as a good way to introduce a new Mass setting. As you saw on the First Sunday of Advent we introduced the Holy, Holy Holy, the Memorial Acclamation, the Great Amen, and the Lamb of God from a setting that was written by Steven Janco called the Mass of Wisdom. We will sing this acapella or with the organ playing just the melody. On the 3rd. Sunday of Advent which is known as Gaudete Sunday we will hear the Mass setting in full accompaniment played with the organ to bring a bit more excitement to the season and to support the familiar melody which we have learned. It is hoped that this setting will further enhance the sung worship here at Sacred Heart. Did you know that if we do not meet our target amount we still have to pay the remaining balance? Which means that we would have to take the funds out of our operating account. Please help us meet our goal. If you d like to make a donation please contact the parish office. Thank you.
