She is kind, loving, and helpful to those in need. She has also inspired people to live their life with hope by her own example. One of Dr.

Adams sat next to the girl while the girl cried and said she could not stay because she had to work, and without her working, they would lose the money that they desperately needed. Dr.

The girl ended up staying and had her successful procedure. Another life motivating story was when Dr.

Julie Carter, Emergency Department Director at Florida Hospital New Smyrna that Dr Adams saved my daughter s life. We are grateful for the care she gave her that day in June.

She has made an impact on those families forever! It is not surprising to meet her and feel her caring and loving presence.

Abigail Adams is married to a Sacred Heart School graduate Dr. Ben Adams, a dentist. We found her as a disciple, and Florida Hospital New Smyrna knows what it is like to have one!

On Monday, April 30, the eighth grade class and six 7th-graders from Sacred Heart Catholic School in New Smyrna Beach went to the Community Hot Meals Program, a soup kitchen operated out of the First

4 Finding a Disciple in the Emergency Room Written by Melina M., Grade 8 Sacred Heart Catholic School, NSB One of the Emergency Room physicians of Florida Hospital New Smyrna, Abigail Adams, is the phenomenon of a child of Christ. She is kind, loving, and helpful to those in need. She has also inspired people to live their life with hope by her own example. One of Dr. Adams God-driven acts was when she had a patient who needed to get her gallbladder removed. Dr. Adams sat next to the girl while the girl cried and said she could not stay because she had to work, and without her working, they would lose the money that they desperately needed. Dr. Adams tried to talk the girl into staying, but she was persistent and said she had to go. The physician later took out her wallet and handed the girl an unknown amount of cash. The girl ended up staying and had her successful procedure. Another life motivating story was when Dr. Adams made a rapid assessment and decision to transfer a patient to Shands Hospital due to her critical condition. The mother told Ms. Julie Carter, Emergency Department Director at Florida Hospital New Smyrna that Dr Adams saved my daughter s life. We are grateful for the care she gave her that day in June. Sacred Heart Catholic School and Church would like to thank Dr. Adams for her compassion towards others, and for going the extra mile to take care of her patients. She picks up her children Weston and Annabelle who both go to Sacred Heart School. She also finds time to support Sacred Heart School by coaching younger grades basketball. On Monday, April 30, the eighth grade class and six 7th-graders from Sacred Heart Catholic School in New Smyrna Beach went to the Community Hot Meals Program, a soup kitchen operated out of the First United Methodist Church in New Smyrna Beach. The team served hot meals to the homeless, helped man stations, and prepared care packs. Sacred Heart Parish is one of 21 churches throughout the community that are part of the program. With the help of the Parker Project, a student-led effort to help people in need, the students distributed care packs full of hygiene products like toothpaste, toothbrush, toilet paper, soap, deodorant, candies, and wash clothes. They also served the homeless by helping with drinks, desserts, and cleaning up. The eighth-graders also brought a bicycle to donate to a homeless person chosen by the soup kitchen volunteers. There were five stations for those who came and everything was organized and fluid. The first station was the care pack station, then those without shelter could pick up pillows, blankets, jackets, and comforters donated by the eighth-graders. Next, families lined up for food and drinks. There was also a station for dessert. Then they went back for seconds and finally, they picked up bread to bring home. All of the homeless families seemed very happy to be fed, to get some clothes, and bring home some care packs. It was undeniable to see, by the looks on the students faces, that they learned so much humility and compassion from the experience of performing the corporal works of mercy of feeding the hungry and clothing the naked.

Sign up for a round-trip to Lou s ordination, leaving Sacred Heart, promptly at 8:00am and leaving Mary, Queen of the Universe at approximately 12:30 or 1:00 to return to Sacred Heart, sign up at the parish office. Suggested donation to cover the cost of the bus is $20.00 per person. Following the 4pm Mass on June 9th there will be a pot luck dinner to celebrate Lou s ordination. All parishioners are invited and are asked to visit or call the parish office to RSVP so we can get an approximate head count and to let us know if you can bring a dish and what it will be. We expect to have a large cake, so desserts will not be needed. Can t make it to the pot-luck? There will be other opportunities to celebrate and congratulate Lou. The afternoon features the precious voices of the Sacred Heart Children s choir, the rousing voices of the St. Gerard Choir and the masterful harmonies of the Sacred Heart Adult Choir. Peace Officers Memorial Day is a part of Police Week, paying tribute to local, State and Federal law enforcement officers.

Services honoring the fallen will be conducted across the country, including Washington, D.C.

8 DAN STOUP ST GERARD VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God." - Colossians 3:16 You may know Dan Stoup as a singer in St. Gerard s Saturday choir who regularly assumes the position of Cantor. He has been a member of our Music Ministry participating in both the Saturday and Sunday choirs since 2003, having been encouraged to share his talents by his late wife, Eileen. This multi-talented gentleman has shared much more than his vocal talent over the years. Dan and Eileen were active participants in various ministries at St. Gerard s since its inception on Christmas Eve of At the time St. Gerard s was being built, Dan and Eileen were able to observe the different phases of construction since they lived so close to the church property. Dan served St. Gerard s as an Usher and Greeter while his wife served as a Reader. He was a charter member of the Fr. Dillon Council of the Knights of Columbus. Both he and Eileen led the Rosary before Masses, were founders and coordinators of the Maids of Martha Ministry (cleaning the church on Monday mornings) and they were among the original group of Small Church Community facilitators, leading group meetings in their home, sharing the gospel in fellowship and prayer. Besides their work here at St. Gerard s the Stoups worked the Bingo at Sacred Heart every Monday evening for 19 years! Dan is a veteran of World War II having served in the Army as a Medical Corpsman with the Infantry in the South Pacific (Philippines). Dan and Eileen were married in 1946 and are the parents of 7 children 6 boys and a girl. Dan worked for the U.S. Department of Defense in logistics in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and retired in 1981 at age 58. Before moving to Florida in 1989 the Stoups lived in the Philadelphia area. Dan now lives with his son, Daniel, in the Meadow Lake subdivision in Edgewater. He will be 95 years young on July 26. Thank you, Dan, for sharing your time and talent for the Glory of God and for the benefit of all at St. Gerard s. You are not just a valuable member of our community but also an inspiration and role model to those who serve in ministry. For all you do in Jesus name may you be blessed!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MINISTRIES AT ST. GERARD S There are different gifts but the same Spirit, there are different ministries but the same Lord... To each person the manifestation of the spirit is given for the common good. Every person is called to contribute to the liturgy in a manner suited to his or her unique talents. It takes the help of many people serving in a variety of different liturgical ministries to help the liturgy flow smoothly and enable the participation of the assembly. At the present time, there is a serious need for volunteers in all ministries at St. Gerard s. We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the gifts God has given you and consider volunteering your talents for one of our ministries. Training: Training is provided to help you get started in all the listed ministries. Scheduling: Liturgical ministers are scheduled at the Mass time of their preference as often as fits their schedule and are asked to arrive 30 minutes before their scheduled Mass begins.
