1 BRIDGING FAITH & LEARNING SERVICE OF WORSHIP Fifth Sunday After Epiphany Sunday, February 10, 2019, 11:00 a.m. The Miraculous Draught of Fishes Raphael, 1515 This morning's Scripture lessons speak to how God calls people for God's work and mission, even those who believe they are unworthy of such a calling. Isaiah envisions God in holiness and splendor, high and lifted up, surrounded by angels. Seeing the holiness of the Lord in this way, prompts Isaiah to cry out, "Woe is me! For I am a man of unclean lips... yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!" Similarly in Luke's Gospel, after seeing his shocking catch of fish, Simon responds to Jesus saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!" In both stories, the Lord invites Isaiah and Simon to participate in doing God's work.

4 Sharing of the Bread and Wine All who love Christ, earnestly repent of their sins, and seek to be at peace with God and neighbor are invited to receive Communion. Wine is used for Communion. If you would prefer to receive grape juice, it is available upon request at the Communion station near the main entrance of the Chapel, on the pulpit side. If you have a gluten allergy, there is a server near the Memorial Chapel who will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine. If you will not receive Communion, you are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest. ORGAN SCHOLAR RECITAL TODAY Chapel Organ Scholar Abraham Ross presents a recital titled "Ricercar" on the Chapel's Flentrop and Aeolian organs this afternoon at 5:15 p.m. The hour-long program will explore the ways we draw connections between past and present, featuring works of Peeter Cornet, Franz Danksagmüller, Joseph-Ermend Bonnal, and Thierry Escaich. Admission is free. STUDENT PREACHER FEB. 17 This year s Duke Chapel Student Preacher is Janie Booth, an art history major from Charlotte. She will preach during the Sunday morning worship service on February 17, and her text will be the Sermon on the Plain in the sixth chapter of the Gospel of Luke. STUDENT RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY Chapel Dean Luke Powery is one of the leaders of a Duke Bass Connections research project next academic year that will draw upon fifty years of preaching materials in the Duke Chapel Recordings digital archive. The project, #MyVoiceMyBody: Minoritized Bodies in the Pulpit at Duke Chapel, will activate the archive by examining historical questions of authority, embodiment, and identity with a goal of better understanding our current time. THREE DEANS OF DUKE CHAPEL IN DIALOGUE Three deans of Duke University Chapel one current and two former will hold a public conversation about the role of preaching in public discourse on February 27 at 7:30 p.m. The discussion, titled Preaching and the Public Square, features Chapel Dean Luke A. Powery; Bishop Will Willimon, Chapel dean from 1984 to 2004; and the Rev. Dr. Sam Wells, Chapel dean from 2005 to FAITH SUMMIT ON RACISM AND CHILD POVERTY The Chapel is helping to sponsor the 2019 Faith Summit on Racism & Child Poverty, along with Episcopalians United Against Racism and End Poverty Durham. The day-long conference is on Thursday, March 7, at Union Baptist Church in Durham. The gathering aims to create steps for congregations and organizations to work together to reduce racism and child poverty. There is no cost but a donation of $10 is suggested.
