TODAY S GUEST PREACHER Today's Sterly and Pelham Wilder, Jr. distinguished guest preacher is Dr. Michael Eric Dyson. Dr. Dyson is a Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University, a New York Times contributing opinion writer, and a contributing editor of The New Republic and of ESPN's The Undefeated website. His 2017 book entitled Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America received wide critical acclaim. BULLETIN COVER ART In collaboration with Duke Inititiatives in Theology and the Arts (DITA), art by Japanese artist Sadao Watanabe will be exhibited in the Chapel January 9 February 21. The exhibition is entitled Beauty Given by Grace: The Biblical Prints of Sadao Watanabe. At age 17, Watanabe ( ) was baptized a Christian, and he quickly combined his new faith with an interest in preserving the traditional Japanese folk art of stencil dying, or katazome. Over time, Watanabe came to be Japan s leading artist to portray biblical scenes. While his work was well-received in his homeland, it was also highly regarded internationally as evidenced by exhibitions at leading institutions such as the British Museum, New York s Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and the Vatican Museum. Watanabe s fame notwithstanding, the artist s chief desire was to create art that could be enjoyed by common people and displayed in ordinary settings. With this goal in view, he chose scenes from the Bible as his primary subject matter in order to communicate the truth of Scripture in the Japanese context. WATANABE RECEPTION A reception celebrating the exhibition of Beauty Given by Grace: The Biblical Prints of Sadao Watanabe will take place in the Chapel narthex at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 18. Barber at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 19. The discussion, The Enduring Challenge of a Moral Economy: 50 Years After Dr. King Challenged Racism, Poverty, and Militarism, will be moderated by Duke Chapel Dean Luke A. Powery.
