1 BRIDGING FAITH & LEARNING SERVICE OF WORSHIP Eighth Sunday after Pentecost Sunday, July 15, 2018, 11:00 a.m. Worship Before the Throne Of God, from the Bamberger Apocalypse, c In this morning's reading from Deuteronomy, Moses teaches Israel how to distinguish between true and false prophets. Having previously warned against the false religious practices of divination already present in the land, Moses poses this futher test: "If a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord but the thing does not take place or prove true, it is a word that the Lord has not spoken." Likewise, God promises not to abandon Israel but to raise up one like Moses to receive words from the Lord and deliver them to the people. God would keep this promise by sending Israel a line of true prophets, culminating supremely in Jesus, the Son of God, who is God's final Word to all humanity, the One whom all are called to obey.

If you would prefer to receive grape juice, it is available upon request at the Communion station near the main entrance of the Chapel, on the pulpit side. If you have a gluten allergy, there is a server near the Memorial Chapel who will be ready to serve you gluten-free wafers and wine. If you will not receive Communion, you are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms over your chest.

6 TODAY IN WORSHIP (Continued) GUEST PREACHER Today's Sterly and Pelham Wilder, Jr. distinguished guest preacher is the Rev. Dr. Rodney S. Sadler, Jr. Dr. Sadler is an associate professor of Bible at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina. His teaching experience includes courses in biblical languages, Old and New Testament interpretation, wisdom literature in the Bible, the history and religion of ancient Israel, and African-American biblical interpretation. His first authored book, Can A Cushite Change His Skin? An Examination of Race, Ethnicity, and Othering in the Hebrew Bible, was published in He was the managing editor of the African-American Devotional Bible. Dr. Sadler served as a visiting lecturer and interim co-director of the Office of Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School and was an associate minister in Durham, North Carolina. TODAY S GUEST CHOIR The Royal School of Church Music in America's goal is to uplift the spiritual life of communities through high quality choral music. The RSCMA Carolina Course is one of ten training courses offered each summer throughout the United States. All courses provide the opportunity for choral training and exploring sacred music in liturgical and/or concert settings. The music directors are renowned in their field and offer excellent leadership for youths and adults to learn new techniques and skills. In addition, significant opportunities for spiritual and theological enrichment are also offered. The RSCMA Carolina Course has enjoyed a week in residence at Duke this past week. The course is managed by Mr. Matthew Michael Brown, Director of Music at First United Methodist Church of Salisbury, NC. 7 SNACKLUCK RECEPTION NEXT SUNDAY Please plan to stay after worship on Sunday, July 22, for snacks and fellowship, and to offer farewells to two Chapel staff members. Christy Lohr Sapp, Associate Dean for Religious Life for the Chapel, and Rachel White, Visitor Relations Specialist, will conclude their work with the Chapel at the end of July; their last Sunday is July 22. Please bring snacks and finger foods to share, such as fruit, cheese and crackers, nuts, or small sandwiches; snacks may be dropped off in the Chapel kitchen prior to worship. The snackluck, which is a simplified version of a potluck meal, will be held in the Chapel Lounge, located in the lower level of the Chapel. All are welcome to attend. SATURDAY SERVICE PROJECT Volunteers are needed at the Durham Distribution Center of the Food Bank, 2700 Angier Avenue, Durham, on Saturday, July 21 from 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Closed-toed shoes are required for all volunteers, and youth ages are welcome to come with an adult. Please send your RSVP to the Congregation office before July 16. LECTIO CONTINUA LESSONS We invite you to read Deuteronomy with us outside of our Sunday services. For the month of July, we invite you to read the passages on the following schedule before the date listed: July 22 (20:1 22:30), and July 29 (23:1 26:19). SUMMER ORGAN WORK This summer on weekdays from July 16 through August 17 specialists will work to voice the Chapel s Benjamin N. Duke Memorial (Flentrop) Organ. Voicing is the art of giving a particular voice to each pipe. The voicer manipulates the mouth of each pipe (akin to the mouthpiece of a recorder, or the opening in a whistle), so it speaks promptly and has the right timbre and volume. The project will require complete quiet in the Chapel s main sanctuary (nave). Visitors will be asked to enter and exit through the side transept doors so as not to disturb the work. The voicing work will not affect services and events on the weekends. Thank you for accommodating the inconveniences of this project. NOMINATIONS FOR SERVICE AWARD The Chapel is now accepting nominations for its Humanitarian Service Award. The award is given each year to recognize individuals with a commitment to service and simplicity. It is inspired by the lives of two Duke professors: Dr. George R. Parkerson Jr. and the late Dr. C. Eric Lincoln. The recipient of the award receives a grant of between $1,500 and $3,000 to further humanitarian efforts. Nominations are due by August 17. For more information, contact the Rev. 8 ENGAGE (Continued) CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CLASSES Sunday morning Christian Education classes for all ages are offered year-round. All classes are held in the lowest level of the Westbrook building from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. and refreshments beginning at 9:30 a.m. New participants are welcome at any time. The person in this position welcomes visitors and acts as an ambassador for the Chapel. He or she also helps coordinate the Chapel s events calendar and does research on the history of the Chapel. The group will be in residence singing at St. Martin-in-the-Fields on July 22, Gloucester Cathedral from July 23 to 27, and Westminster Abbey on July 28 and 29. FOR YOUNG ADULTS AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS Young adults and university students are invited to gather for dinner and Bible study on Thursday evenings in the Chapel kitchen, twice a month.
