573 N. Highland Street, Memphis, Tennessee Office: (901) FAX: (901) Our Father and Chief Shepherd: His Eminence, Metropolitan NICHOLAS of Detroit Rev. Fr. Simon Thomas, Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Nicholas Vieron, Pastor Emeritus Mr. William A. Kallas, Pastoral Assistant WELCOME We are blessed that you have chosen to participate in our worship service and pray that you will be both enlightened and inspired. We encourage you to ask questions and please contact our ministry leaders if you would like to volunteer your time and talents. Thank You! Sunday, January 27, 2019 Fifteenth Sunday of Luke Holy Bread: Enosis Touliatos Ushers: Team 4 Epistle Reader: Andrew Douglas Homilist: Fr. Simon Thomas Coffee Fellowship: 40-Day Memorial of Cyndi Bagatelas Guidelines for Holy Communion The Orthodox Church understands the Eucharist the Lord s Supper to be primarily the paramount expression of Christian unity. The unfortunate reality of our modern day is that the various segments of Christendom are not unified with the historic Orthodox faith. While we fervently pray for this unity, as noted in every service of the Orthodox Church, we must offer a reminder that only baptized and chrismated Orthodox Christians may receive Holy Communion. All guests are invited to receive the blessed bread at the conclusion of our divine services.

Hymns of the Day FIRST ANTIPHON Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, Savior, save us! Verse 1: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless His holy name. (Psalm 102:1) Verse 2: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all that He has done for you. (Psalm 102:2) Verse 3: The Lord in heaven has prepared His throne, and His Kingdom rules over all. (Psalm 102:17) Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; both now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. SECOND ANTIPHON Save us, O Son of God, Who arose from the dead. We sing to You: Alleluia. Verse 1: Praise the Lord, O my soul; I will praise the Lord in my life; I will chant unto my God for as long as I have my being. (Psalm 145:1-2) Verse 2: Blessed is He of whom the God of Jacob is his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God. (Psalm 145:5) Verse 3: The Lord shall be King unto eternity; your God, O Zion, from generation to generation (Psalm 145:10) Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; both now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. THIRD ANTIPHON Verse: This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it. Let the heavens and the earth praise Him. When You descended unto death, O Lord who yourself are immortal Life, then did You mortify Hades by the lightning flash of Your Divinity. Also when You raised the dead from the netherworld, all the Powers of the heavens were crying out: O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory to You.

Hymns of the Day APOLYTIKION FOR ST. The grace that from your mouth shone forth like a torch illumined the universe. It deposited in the world the treasures of the absence of avarice. It showed us the height that is attained by humility. Now you instruct us by your words, Father John Chrysostom. Intercede with Christ God, the Word himself, entreating Him to save our souls. APOLYTIKION FOR THE ANNUNCIATION: FOURTH MODE Today is the beginning of our salvation and the revelation of the mystery before the Ages. The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin, and Gabriel proclaims the great grace. Therefore, with him let us cry out unto the Theotokos, Rejoice, O highly favored one; the Lord is with you. You sanctified the virginal womb by Your birth, O Lord, and blessed the hands of Symeon fittingly, O Christ God; and even now You came and saved us. Now, give peace to our Nation in time of war, and empower our Leaders, so loved by You, the only one who loves humanity.

Readings of the Day EPISTLE READING Saint Paul s Letter to the Hebrews (7:26-28; 8:1-2) Prokeimenon. First Mode. Psalm 48 My mouth shall speak wisdom. Verse: Hear this, all you nations Brethren, it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, unstained, separated from sinners, exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did this once for all when he offered up himself. Indeed, the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect for ever. Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord. GOSPEL READING The Gospel According to Saint Luke (19:1-10) At that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost."

Synaxis of the Three Hierarchs: Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom January 30th This common feast of these three teachers was instituted a little before the year 1100, during the reign of the Emperor Alexis I Comnenus, because of a dispute and strife that arose among the notable and virtuous men of that time. Some of them preferred Basil, while others preferred Gregory, and yet others preferred John Chrysostom, quarreling among themselves over which of the three was the greatest. Furthermore, each party, in order to distinguish itself from the others, assumed the name of its preferred Saint; hence, they called themselves Basilians, Gregorians, or Johannites. Desiring to bring an end to the contention, the three Saints appeared together to the saintly John Mavropous, a monk who had been ordained Bishop of Euchaita, a city of Asia Minor, they revealed to him that the glory they have at the throne of God is equal, and told him to compose a common service for the three of them, which he did with great skill and beauty. Saint John of Euchaita (celebrated Oct. 5) is also the composer of the Canon to the Guardian Angel, the Protector of a Man's Life. In his old age, he retired from his episcopal see and again took up the monastic life in a monastery in Constantinople. He reposed during the reign of the aforementioned Emperor Alexis Comnenus ( ). Apolytikion of Three Hierarchs. First Mode. The three most great luminaries of the Three-Sun Divinity have illumined all of the world with the rays of doctrines divine and true; they are the sweetly-flowing rivers of wisdom, who with godly knowledge have watered all creation in clear and mighty streams: The great and sacred Basil, and the Theologian, wise Gregory, together with the renowned John, the famed Chrysostom of golden speech. Let us all who love their divinely-wise words come together, honoring them with hymns; for ceaselessly they offer entreaty for us to the Trinity.
