3 Clairvaux chronicle BELIEVERS WANTED! Every Fall presents us with a crisis of faith: will Spring and light and warmth ever return? But after all, we re a faith community, and every Fall we work to overcome doubt. Where? In the garden, of course. Our Garden Group once again invites us all to subdue the chill by helping with the Fall cleanup and by planting those sturdy tokens of immortality: ornamental Kale and cabbage, and glorious Spring flowering bulbs. Bring a basic tool or two, enjoy the company of fellow believers, and of course, Father Jerry s bagels, cakes, coffee, tea and soda. FALL CLEANUP Saturday, October 23, from 8:00 am on Info: Maureen and Ron: St. Bernard S 50 / 50 club Winners September 2010 Antonella Pietraniello $ and October 2010 Jim Carswell $ congratulations! Past and Present I f you have ever visited lower Manhattan around Barclay St (once famous for its religious goods stores) you may have made a visit to St. Peter s, the first Catholic church to be built in New York City. The year was There was considerable fear and suspicion among Protestants about the growing number of Catholics who were viewed by some as puppets of the pope. They looked upon the pope as an enemy of democracy, and as more and more immigrants arrived from Catholic Europe they feared a papal assault on America In fact it was not until the mid 19 th century that the Protestant influence on public schools in New York was finally challenged by Bishop John Hughes. Even then anti-catholicism remained prevalent. Catholic school system developed as a way to preserve and pass on the faith. If we fast forward we find a certain parallel with what is happening now in lower Manhattan with the proposal to build an Islamic cultural center in close proximity to ground zero. What ever our view of the choice of location, there is a larger issue here that pertains to how we view those of other faiths, especially ones that are not rooted in the Judaeo- Christian tradition. The Muslim faith and its practices, its very concept of God, is different from our own. Moreover the association of Islam with terrorist activity has added to the fear and suspicion. Remembering something of our own history as Catholics in America can help us to advocate tolerance and understanding, to go beyond stereotypes, and to exercise the core teaching of love which Jesus would have us apply even to our enemies. 3

6 Gifted, engaged, growing St. Bernard S pastoral The Gallup Survey Connecting the By Diane Vella, Pastoral Associate Name tags at Mass! Welcoming new parishioners! Gifted, Engaged and Growing Five Year Pastoral Plan Awakening Faith for younger adults! Faith-based story time and Exercise groups for toddlers! Member Engagement Survey! Ministry Fair/Gifts Celebration New website! Facebook coming soon! Newsletters to young families! Eucharistic Formation and Renewal.... dot... dot.. ALL of the initiatives dotted above are different facets of our five-year parish pastoral plan to insure that we continue as a vibrant faith community for the foreseeable future. According to the plan, which was developed after input from parish Listening Sessions and our first Member Engagement Survey, there are essentially THREE THINGS WE NEED TO DO: Encourage all parishioners to discover their Godgiven GIFTS and talents and ENGAGE them in the life and work of the parish. Insure parish GROWTH through greater welcome and hospitality, and by involving everyone in new, creative efforts to REACH OUT to parishioners who are not engaged in parish life. SUPPORT and ENCOURAGE those who are already engaged in parish life and ministry through greater recognition of their efforts and formation and training for ministry. Each of the dots above represents an effort to do one or more of these things. Today we focus particularly on our second Gallup Member Engagement Survey. It s been 2 years since we last did the survey, and we want to find out if the dots have made any difference in how some people feel about their membership in the parish. Remember the survey is designed to measure engagement, i.e., the degree to which people feel bonded to the parish and invested in its life and mission. Gallup organization research indicates that the ability of parishes to accomplish their mission is closely linked to the percentage of engaged parishioners. Increase engagement, and life and work of the parish blossoms! Thanks to Mary Rickard and Mary Lynn Borst who coordinated the administration of the ME 25 survey. Father Jerry and members of the Pastoral Plan Coordinating Committee will be attending a seminar in November to receive and interpret the results of the survey. As we did last time, we will report the results back to the parish in January. Are you ready to ENGAGE with one of the DOTS? You can do it we can help! Contact Diane Vella at or dvella@stbernardslevittown.org. (No obligation free box of Dots candy!) 6

7 Gifted, engaged, growing St. Bernard S pastoral plan There s still time to take the Gallup ME 25 Survey It takes only about 7 minutes! Survey Access Code is B91BA3 At the parish: Written survey will be administered during all Masses on October 16 and 17. OR at the parish office during regular hours October 15 - October 31. (disponible en español también) For information contact Diane Vella at dvella@stbernardslevittown.org or (dot dot dot ).... Name tag help needed! We want St. Bernard s to be a place where all are known by name. Can you help?? Can you volunteer to come to Mass 20 minutes early once a month to make name tags?? Contact Connie D Auria at or goldnimble@aol.com. On Pentecost Sunday weekend, June 10-11, 2011, St. Bernard s parish will hold its first Gifts Celebration (aka Ministry Fair) in seven years! We will celebrate the gifts and talents that the Holy Spirit has graciously bestowed on all our parishioners, organizations and ministries in a festive atmosphere of joy and fun for all! Would you like to be part of planning this and making it happen? First meeting is Tuesday, October 26, 7:30 in the parish center. Contact Louise or Mauro Cassano at or lc@louisecassano.com. 7

8 Liturgy corner Edited by Father Chris Costigan 8 TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 17, 2010 Will not God secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? The Lord loves in us the kind of persistence that characterizes the widow who keeps bothering the judge until he delivers a just decision. Because such persistence testifies to a promise that we have been given. Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed. Namely, to the promise God has planted in you. Be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient. Moses witnesses to this: as long as he remains with his arms in the form of a cross, the promises of God come true. Magnificat, October 2010 In the second reading Paul exhorts believers to be formed more deeply into Christ through the scriptures handed on and taught within a living community of faith. Formation in the truth is essential, for it leads to salvation. While falsehood cannot be tolerated, it must be refuted with a patience and purpose that will promote conversion to the truth. In Luke s Gospel the persistent clamor of a widow for justice moves a judge, who was indifferent to the demands of justice, to respond to her need. How much more so will the God of justice grant to those who hunger for justice the gifts of right relationship and a share in the goods of the earth for which they long. Let us clamor for justice as an expression of our faith. Sourcebook, 2010 St. matthew S GoSpel with Monsignor graham Next class Monday, October 18, 8pm, Parish Center Monsignor s Bible series is on St. Matthew s Gospel with commentary by Dr. Scott Hahn. It is not too late to start this interesting program. Classes begin after the 7:30 pm Novena prayers in the church. Come and join us and please bring your bible. FEAST DAY OF SAINT LUKE Monday, October 18 Saint Luke s Gospel is often called the Gospel of Prayer. It begins with Zechariah and the people praying in the Temple at the time when the angel Gabriel comes to announce the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:5-20) and concludes with the Apostles praying in the Temple after the Ascension of Jesus (Luke 24:53). It also contains far more references to Jesus at prayer and more parables on prayer than any other Gospel Luke, for instance, typically mentions Jesus praying at important moments of his life. He records Jesus prayed immediately upon leaving the waters of his baptism in the Jordan (3:21), before choosing his Apostles (6:12), after feeding the five thousand and before predicting his passion for the first time (9:18), prior to teaching his disciples the Our Father (11:1), during both the Transfiguration (9:29) and his Agony in the Garden (22:41-45), and at the moment of his death on the cross (23:46). There is a tradition that Luke was one of the 72 disciples sent out in today s Gospel, and another that has him accompanying Cleopas on the road to Emmaus. 9 Parish social ministry Sr. Christine Sammons, O.P., St. Vincent de Paul: Thanks to those who responded to our urgent request for food for the pantry. As the economy continues to limp along, those in need know that they can look to us for help. Thank you for helping us help our less fortunate Levittown neighbors. The BLUE WAGON: Each Sunday at the 9:00 Mass which is particularly family and children friendly, we invite our children to contribute a non-perishable (non-expired) food (or paper good or toiletry item) to our food pantry. We hope that this simple gesture will become a habit as our children grow older. The children will be invited before Mass to bring forward their food item and place it in our BLUE WAGON which will be placed in front of the altar. As always, we anticipate a positive response, and thank our children and families in advance! We thank Denise Lownie for her help in transporting the Blue Wagon donations to the pantry. New Stroke Support Group Meeting: Please join us Friday, 10/15 at 2:30 in our Parish Center. Stroke Life Society is a community organization of survivors and co-survivors in the pursuit of living and helping others. A stroke can be very isolating. By sharing experiences and encouraging one another, together we can face and overcome common challenges. Call Ben at (516) Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much. It was a great day where we raised money for our own St. Bernard s Conference to use in service for our less fortunate neighbors. Pampers and wipes are always welcome since they are taxable and cannot be purchased with food stamps. We are always grateful for supermarket gift cards. Please remember to buy one get one free! God bless! Our Charitable KIDZ have regrouped for this school year. They participated in the Walk for the Poor with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and are planning their next activity which will be a food drive at King Kullen on Saturday, October 23rd. We hope that our parishioners will consider shopping there on the 23rd, and contributing to the pantry. We are grateful to the managers of King Kullen for their support and cooperation.
