They are trusting and loving and have hearts that are open to love. They are joyful when they are made aware of God s love for them, and are eager to return that love. This is the model Jesus holds out to us if we want to welcome the reign of God. We need to have open, loving hearts. We must drop our defenses, however we came by them, and welcome Christ s love for us with joy. This is impossible for us on our own. Only the grace of God will enable us to do this, but that grace is freely and generously given. We have only to accept it. 3 RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY OCTOBER 7, 2018 Every Life Cherished Chosen Sent PLEDGE OF RE-COMMITMENT I thank God today for the gift of my life, And for the lives of my brothers and sisters. I know I am responsible for the unborn Who cannot speak for themselves. I know that the most serious tragedy of our day Is the tragedy of abortion. Today I commit myself Never to be silent, Never to be passive, Never to be forgetful of the unborn. I commit myself to be active in respecting all life And never to stop defending life Until all my brothers and sisters are protected. He was clearly respected by Pope Fabian for his virtue, faith and knowledge of the Church. Around the year 250, the Pope sent Denis and six other bishops on a difficult mission to restore Christianity in Gaul, which had suffered persecutions by the Romans. Denis settle on an island in the Seine near the city of Paris. With the help of his companions, the priest Rusticus and the deacon Eleutherius, he built a church on the island and began preaching the Gospel. The three were so successful in converting pagans and spreading Christianity that the local heathen priests angrily pressed the governor to put an end to their work. Denis and his companions were arrested and jailed. After suffering torture, they were beheaded. Although their bodies were thrown into the river, they were recovered and buried by a pious woman named Catulla. A small chapel was built over the graves where, four centuries later, the great Benedictine abbey of Saint-Denis was erected. According to one legend, Denis did not die immediately but was led by a choir of angels as he carried his severed head from his place of execution at Monmartre to the site of the future abbey. During the Middle Ages, Denis was so popular with many rulers that his veneration grew into a national devotion. Today, he is known as the patron of France. He was also one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. Page 5
