INFANT BAPTISM Parents requesting baptism for their children under 7 years old must attend a mandatory preparation class offered every other month. Please call the Parish Office in advance for scheduling or other information. Infant baptisms are the last Sunday of each month. MARRIAGES/MARRIAGE PREPARATION Couples seeking the sacrament of marriage must be registered parishioners who are actively participating in the life of St. George Roman Catholic Parish. THREE MISSIONS Today we begin with one of the servant songs from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic of Jesus ministry of service. Isaiah s mission is not only to bring back the children of Jacob to gather in Israel; it is also to be a light to the nations (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, with be the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy and the basis of the new. This Sunday we begin a series of readings from Paul s letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul is identified by his mission: he is an apostle of Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he addresses this letter is also identified: it is part of the universal church of God. The Corinthians are called to holiness, as are all Christians. Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord was celebrated last Monday, today s Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The reading emphasizes that Jesus outranks John: his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus accepts John s Baptism, even though it is He Himself who is the Lamb of God. 3 @DULT Confirmation is on Sunday, March 26th at 2:00pm with Bishop Kicanas being the main celebrant. Confirmation classes are mandatory and open to all Catholics 18 years and older, who have been baptized and made their 1st Communion. You must attend ALL three classes and bring a copy of your Baptism and First Communion certificate that we can keep. Classes are: Tuesday, February 7th at 5:30pm Tuesday, February 21st at 5:30pm Thursday, February 23rd at 6:00pm For more information contact Fr. Pinti at KOC M@KES GIFT TO BOYS & GIRLS CLUB The Knights of Columbus from St. George Parish in Apache Junction presented a check for $2,600 to the Boys and Girls Club in AJ last week. The proceeds for the donation came from the KOC s Show Your Ride car show held each October. St. John said We never turn a child away for financial reasons, this donation will help us keep that promise. Vin]_ Li_s_r You may recall that last March I announced that the Church of St. Mary in Melrose, MN, where I served as pastor for 13 years, suffered a major fire. While much of the exterior brick structure still stands, the interior, especially the sanctuary area and magnificent high altar were burned and destroyed. There is some division in the parish whether to build new or restore the old church as much as possible. Over the past several weeks, a few people here have asked if I might invite donations here at St. George for the renovation/restoration of St. Mary s Church. Hence this request. If you wish to make a donation, there is an envelope in the pews and at the doors with a number of categories for donations. Please write Melrose Church, and make any checks out to St. George with the specification, St. Mary s in Melrose. All proceeds will be forwarded to St. Mary s Church in Melrose. Thank you in advance. I am one of the Winter Priests assisting here at St. George from November through March. Above all, please pray for unity in St. Mary s while their discernment for how to proceed continues. Fr. 5 Middle School youth (grades 6-8) Tues., Jan. 17 The Eucharist We continue our semester on the Sacraments and Prayer with The Eucharist. In this session we will look at the Church s central sacrament, The Eucharist. Students will understand how the Eucharist has a connection to Passover and the Last Supper and how it is celebrated today with the Eucharist as a celebration of Christ s presence now and how it sends us out to live as Christ in the world. Prayer Shawls are available in the parish office for anyone who needs one for someone homebound, in a nursing home or hospital, or just someone who is ill. For more information call Carol at On Saturday, January 28th Life Teen, EDGE and SPC 6+ will be picking oranges on behalf of United Food Bank. This will be our 8th year picking oranges for United Food Bank, and returning to the same homeowner s property each time at the request of the homeowner. After a morning of picking oranges we are treated to a special lunch by the homeowners! Students wishing to attend this function will need to dress in layers, have closed toe shoes and have a signed permission slip returned no later than Sunday, January 22. This service project is mandatory for our Confirmation Candidates, unless other arrangements have been made. For more information contact Christine Ollive at ext. 17. High School youth (grades 9-12) Sun., Jan. 15 Full-Filled This semester at Life Teen we will be exploring the Sacraments in detail. We begin our semester with Full-Filled - Living Sacramental Grace. The goal of this night is to encourage our students to live out the sacramental grace that each baptized Christian has. This is a very practical night where we as a community will be challenged to recognize our call to bring God s grace into the world through the sacraments. The sacraments give us power and the actual grace that we need to overcome evil and spread God s goodness. For more information contact Christine at ext. 17. Originally, the source of our Paschal Triduum was but a single liturgy extending from Saturday sundown to sunrise on Easter Sunday. The two days leading up to the liturgy were days of fast, not only for the elect, but for the church preparing to baptize them. A fifthcentury pope explained that the church imitated the apostles, who were in hiding with their grief from the arrest of Jesus, and therefore sacraments, even penance, were forbidden. Inevitably, though, people wanted to come together, and so eventually a Liturgy of the Word developed for Good Friday. This was the first step toward today s shape of the Triduum, and gradually new ideas were embraced, including the veneration of the cross and a simple Communion service. Interestingly, the Word remained central, since we know that in those days the pope did not receive Communion at this liturgy, even though the faithful had that option. In the other churches of Rome, priests and people received Communion under both species. Although the custom of Communion on Good Friday took hold, it did not endure past the Middle Ages. The central liturgies of the year slowly unraveled and disappeared from parish life. Remember that there were no seminaries in those days, and books were a rare luxury. Most priests could only manage to celebrate a simple low Mass, and few parishes could afford the ritual books that would guide a priest through the complex forms. Holy Week remained important in private devotion, but for a time the liturgies virtually disappeared. COME HOME TO IREL@ND with R_v.
